Power Up - Cultural Weekly
At the very end of autumn, under the threat of a temperature drop into the 30s, I was covering new plants with plastic blankets. I wanted to leave my work in the garden and call my mother. The problem with that is both my parents had been dead for some 55 years. I was in my early 20s when my father died, and on the same day three years later, my mother pulled her car over to the side of a road, lay down in the front seat and died. My dad was 50. Mom was 53.
I Have a Dream: Inaugural Poems for a New Generation
The Next Gen By Aileen Cassinetto on January 20, 2021 in Main Posts, Poetry Introduction We begin with hope. This is perhaps why poems were traditional New Year’s gifts—for what is poetry but a stockpile of possibilities. The past year has been shaped by the coronavirus pandemic, by economic recession and racial unrest, by distance learning and social distancing, and what was possibly the most gripping election in US history.
Kaia Glafkides: "America Today"
The Next Gen By Kaia Glafkides on January 20, 2021 in Focus, Poetry America Today When you’re eight years old You don’t think about The world melting away Or people dying because of the color of their skin Picking cotton, How far have we come? Hungry and without a home At recess Playing, while another school is under attack Are our fathers being torn from our families? Afraid to walk alone at night Because I am a female One thousand and thirty nine killed at the hands of police Relentless.

Hailee Smalley: "Vibrant Petals"
The Next Gen By Hailee Smalley on January 20, 2021 in Focus, Poetry Vibrant Petals The Moon is just a big pile of rocks And flowers are just weeds But even with these descriptions We only see the beauty and light How the petals of a flower are bright and vibrant How there smells bring the butterflies and bees So why can’t we just see the beauty in ourselves Yes we are just big balls of flesh stomping on all the flowers And hiding from the moon’s glow, But do you ever stop to consider how...
Abigale Wee: "Growing Home"
The Next Gen By Abigale Wee on January 20, 2021 in Focus, Poetry Growing Home There’s a certain endearment About the black and white tiles on the floor of Toy Boat Dessert Cafe, the lingering smell of coffee, the figurines that line the wall. I grew a piece of home in the table next to the ice-cream-sticky rocking horse. I planted a seed of home between the rocks leading to the creek where time seems to flow like honey and the leaves above make verdant stained glass.
Money Bail Cost Me My Job, Apartment, and
I am 30 years old and have never been in trouble with the law until this year. Actually, I never would imagined this, but I spent my 30th birthday in the Elmwood Correctional Facility Jail in Milpitas, California. If I was not forced to sit in jail for almost three weeks, I wouldn’t feel like my life is falling apart.
