Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

My first published piece of work was for a children's match-day football programme. My first 'news' story was for 'The News, Portsmouth'.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No!

How is social media changing news?

It allows everyone to contribute and tell their stories which is great. However, it can also lead to untrue and unverified news which is bad.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

The only one I can think of is Rita Skeeter from Harry Potter, that's not good is it!

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It's about honesty and integrity. I think to be the best journalist you can be, you have to report on what you feel is right.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I really enjoy when people use a screenshot of a comedy show and apply it to the news. My favorite ones at the moment are the peep show ones.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Just being credited, often my voice doesn't need to be considered.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Word and Email. Occasionally KineMaster when editing an recorded interview.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, I feel it allows me to interact and see other peoples views more than the others, even if I don't agree with them.

Who do you wish followed you?

John Cleese.

Why did you become a journalist?

I want to change the world by reporting stories that need reporting, everyone should have their voices heard and I see that as my job.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My first story that ever got published. It made the front page of my local newspaper (The News, Portsmouth). It was a heartwarming story too.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Take absolutely every opportunity and never doubt your own ability's. And, probably to keep pestering until you get a response! .

When's the best time to pitch you?

After I've adapted to the day!

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I haven't received a pitch, yet.

What's your favorite drink?

A pint of Guinness.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Most likely at a local pub with my friends or failing that, watching sport!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Athletic is always so insightful and detailed about football. I'm a bit of a football nerd so it really appeals to me!

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That everyone is related to a sailor or fisherman!
