NU announces Pete Nance as a senior for senior day
That should end any speculation about him returning for a 5th year. He did his 4 years and is leaving, as he should. I wish him the best going forward. 2023 is going to be rough. It's basically this years' team, minus Nance, Greer, and Elyjah Williams, with a freshman big man coming in. I doubt many good players will be interested in transferring in. Link to the Twitter announcement
Brandon Joseph explains why he transferred
He did an interview with Louie Vasscher. Basically, he wants the best shot at the NFL, and he doesn't think his fit in NU's new defense puts him in position to be a high draft pick (like many of us originally suspected when he entered the portal). I thought this was the money quote: "The way the 2020 season went for me, in Coach Hank’s version, I think I was the best version of myself. I didn’t feel the same way this year." Ouch.
WR Jordan Mosley to transfer portal
Mosley was a 4* WR and NU's highest rated recruit in the 2021 class according to 247, with offers from a whole host of Power 5 schools (Penn State, Oregon, Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Texas A&M). He appeared in 3 games as a true freshman and had 1 catch for 7 yards. The hits keep coming. He didn't do a ton as a true freshman, but NU WRs rarely do, and he was the highest rated WR recruit NU had (though Fleurima outdoes him there from the 2022 class).
COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY-GUIDED COMMISSURAL ALIGNMENT OF THE EVOLUT VALVE USING THE CUSP-OVERLAP TECHNIQUE, A RETROSPECTIVE PILOT STUDY
BACKGROUND Advancement of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and its long-term outcomes is warranted as it expands to a low-risk population. Procedural optimization using commissural alignment (CA) and the cusp-overlap technique have recently been suggested, especially for supra-annular self-expanding valves. The Evolut valve (EV) has two markers to guide valve position and orientation: the hat-marker and the flush port.
Early draft love for Brandon Joseph
This scouting report from The Draft Network absolutely glows about him, and says he'll be an easy 1st round pick if he continues to play the way he did in 2020. Literally the only con they could find for him was the limited sample size (aka "experience"). If Joseph repeats 2020 in 2021 and declares for the draft early, NU could see itself with a 1st round pick for the 2nd year in a row.
Ryan Hilinski on Cameo
Here's the first specific Northwestern thing I've seen now that college athletes are allowed to profit off their name, image, and likeness. For the low, low price of $50, you can have Ryan Hilinski record a customized message for you. Whee! In all seriousness, good for Hilinski. This is an easy way for a popular college athlete to make a little spending money. I imagine he'll start to see business pick up if he gets officially named the starter and plays decently well.
Cool pieces on LAX stars Izzy Scane and Lauren Gilbert
This one about Scane highlights her back story of learning lacrosse from her brother and always playing against her house wall 24/7, annoying her family to no end. This one about Gilbert highlights how she came from Oregon, definitely not a lacrosse hotbed, but still was able to get noticed, and wants to give back to the area she grew up in to grow the game there. I really enjoyed reading both of these, and hope you will too!
Travis Whillock retiring
Not a huge surprise, but he won't be back. He had a ton of injuries in college, including 2 surgeries after the 2019 season, and seems content with his decision to walk away. This is a good interview with him about the decision if you're interested. It looks like he will be finishing up a masters from NU this June, so good on him for maximizing his time as a scholarship athlete at NU. Here's wishing him the best in whatever life has in store for him.
Class of 2021 QB commit Brendan Sullivan enrolling early
He just announced Monday night that he's starting at NU in January. This is particularly notable because his team's season is still ongoing; they are 3 wins away from repeating as state champions. But the Michigan season is paused due to Covid, and they don't know when it will resume, so he's focusing on his future. I'm excited for this kid coming to Evanston. He had a monster senior season and is widely viewed as the best QB prospect in the state.
Inside scoop on new TE John Raine
So it turns out he graduated from my high school, Westminster Christian School in Miami, Florida. When I saw this on NU's roster, I texted my Dad, who teaches there, and it turns out he had John in two classes. His comments on John make it sound like he'll fit in well with NU's football culture: "He should be a positive leader on their team... John has some very good skills and a good work ethic." Nothing too earth-shattering there, I know, but good to hear nonetheless.
Ifeadi Odenigbo doesn't exactly rave about his time at Northwestern
From this great article in The Athletic (subscription required) about his breakout in the NFL this year. Direct quotes from Odenigbo: "Looking back on it, I wouldn’t have gone. That’s so much stress and pressure on an 18-year-old kid. I was miserable." To be fair, this is about being such a highly rated recruit when he was so raw. Felt he had a lot of pressure on him that he couldn't live up to that he wouldn't have had at a school like Ohio State that's full of top-rated recruits.
Processing of urushiol (poison ivy) hapten by both endogenous and exogenous pathways for presentation to T cells in vitro.
The antigen processing requirements for urushiol, the immunogen of poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans), were tested by presentation of urushiol to cultured human urushiol-responsive T cells. Urushiol was added to antigen-presenting cells (APC) either before or after fixation with paraformaldehyde. Three distinct routes of antigen processing were detected.
