Socialism Won’t Get Rid of Work. But It Will Allow Us to Work Less Under Better Conditions.
Alex Gourevitch I originally found it unnatural to think this way; I was with the postwork socialists. And when I thought more about it, and especially the question, “Why the interest in the work ethic?”, I came to the conclusion that there’s something fundamental to the postwork view which underlies the work ethic thing: the idea that because work is necessary, it must be unfree. Just because something’s necessary does not make it unfree; what’s necessary is also indeterminate.
Epidemiology of healthcare-associated infection reported from a hospital-wide incidence study: considerations for infection prevention and control planning
Summary Background The measure of disease frequency most widely used to report healthcare-associated infection (HAI) is the point-prevalence survey. Incidence studies are rarely performed due to time and cost constraints; they show which patients are affected by HAI, when and where, and inform planning and design of infection prevention and control (IPC) measures. Aim To determine the epidemiology of HAI within a general and a teaching hospital in Scotland.
Impact of healthcare-associated infection on length of stay
Summary Background Increased length of stay (LOS) for patients is an important measure of the burden of healthcare-associated infection (HAI). Aim To estimate the excess LOS attributable to HAI. Methods This was a one-year prospective incidence study of HAI observed in one teaching hospital and one general hospital in NHS Scotland as part of the Evaluation of Cost of Nosocomial Infection (ECONI) study. All adult inpatients with an overnight stay were included.
Workplace “Anti-Racism Trainings” Aren’t Helping
Last Friday, the Trump administration called for a swift end to workplace anti-racism training for federal employees. “It has come to the President’s attention that Executive Branch agencies have spent millions of taxpayer dollars to date ‘training’ government workers to believe divisive, anti-American propaganda,” a White House memo read.
A Prospective Cohort Study of Human Papillomavirus-Driven Oropharyngeal Cancers: Implications for Prognosis and Immunisation

Michael Rosen's 'Workers' Tales': Socialism for Kids
A collection of political fables from late-19th- and early-20th-century Great Britain offers striking allegories that remain pertinent today. J. C.
The Tyranny of Personality Testing
The majority of the personality tests that circulated during the postwar period sought to assign value to employees’ predilections, classifying a given worker, for example, as “normal” or “abnormal.” Isabel was interested in a gentler kind of Taylorism, one that made “every worker feel as if he was needed somewhere, doing something, no matter how unglamorous the task.” For Isabel, Emre writes, “the idea was not to accept work as a grim reality—the proverbial grind—but to set up the...
Arbitrary Rule
It’s the rare person who works for a living and can’t easily recall their worst boss. In October, The New York Times and The New Yorker reported that for dozens of women in Hollywood, that boss was Harvey Weinstein. The revelations prompted a surge of women in other industries to come forward with their own accounts of sexual misconduct by their professional superiors.

Paying for Free Love
For nearly half a century, the San Francisco Bay Area has loomed in the American imagination as the destination for social permissiveness. Berkeley is the haven of unwashed, drum-circling hippies and left-wing academics. Oakland incubates radicals who convene vegan potlucks in moldering punk houses and lob Molotov cocktails during protests.

Like a Boss | Full Stop
[This piece originally appeared in the Full Stop Quarterly Issue #3. The Quarterly is available to download or subscribe here.] Across a number of professions, bosses have been vanishing. Last year, Tony Hsieh, CEO of the online shoe mega-retailer Zappos, announced that the company would implement Holacracy, a hierarchy-free office model with which Hsieh had become enamored after attending a conference talk by its creators.
The Hostage Situation
[This piece originally appeared in the Full Stop Quarterly Issue #3. The Quarterly is available to download or subscribe here.] In June 2013, the Associated Press released photographs of Chip Starnes, the American co-owner of the company Specialty Medical Supplies, who was being held hostage by a crowd of Chinese workers at a factory just outside of Beijing. Starnes had arrived at his plant in order to commence layoffs and subsequently was apprehended and imprisoned by disgruntled employees.
5 Reasons Why Moby-Dick Just Won’t Die
The truth is, nobody knows exactly why Melville’s White Whale continues to surface and thrash about in our cultural waters every 20 years or so, but that’s been the pattern since the 1920s: every new generation of Americans discovers the Moby-Dick it needs.
Why Everyone Is Obsessed With Songs About Work Right Now
The post-recession 21st century has been a strange and critical time for work. On one hand, we collectively have too much of it: over the last several decades, workers in the U.S. and elsewhere have clocked an increasing number of hours at work. In elite, white-collar professions, including medicine, law, and tech, employees are regularly expected to be available 24/7, answering emails or calls on weekends, nights, and holidays.
Want to Diversify Publishing? Unionize.
Those who work in or follow book publishing can now reliably expect to encounter an annual cycle of handwringing over the industry’s lack of diversity. These flurries generally begin with the release of a demographic survey of the workforce, ascend to fever pitch through a bevy of near-identical articles and panel discussions in which the industry elite decries the unbearable whiteness of the industry, then fade to dormancy until the next year’s report comes out and the sequence begins anew.
Money Troubles | Dissent Magazine
Late last month, Billfold writer Paulette Perhach reminded us that life under capitalism is better when you have money. In her widely shared essay, “A Story of a Fuck Off Fund,” she contrasted two possible futures for a young woman entering the workforce.
