Leadership lessons that create clarity, purpose and impact
The greatest leaders I know remain students of the world around them, and the lesson I carry forward every year is clear: you are never done learning. I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with extraordinary people whose insight and expertise have shaped my thinking and pushed me to be a better leader. As I reflect on the experiences and challenges of the last year, three leadership lessons continue to guide me forward.
Aligning business with community impact
During a recent interview with Multifamily Executive, I was asked to share my favorite inspirational quote I live by each day:“If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?” These words from Rabbi Hillel, Pirkei Avot (Ethics of Our Fathers) resonate deeply with me because they capture the balance every leader must strike between self-accountability, service to others and urgency in action.
Essential books for leaders
More than 10 years ago, I learned that President George W. Bush was an avid reader, consuming up to almost 100 books in one year. I was shocked — how did he find the time, energy and focus given the demands of his role as president? While considering my reading habits, I realized that I would occasionally pick up a book without committing too much focused attention to reading. Inspired by President Bush’s reading habit, I set a goal to read 150 books in 2016.
Leading through challenging times
At The NRP Group, I host “NRP News Live,” an internal broadcast where employees across 17 markets learn about different facets of our organization. Launched during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has evolved into a monthly panel discussion with NRP leaders and an open Q&A segment, providing a consistent touchpoint through which employees and leaders can connect. A Q fever outbreak in a small animal veterinary hospital, associated with a cat caesarean section, initiated a cat seroprevalence study (n = 712) that found circulating antibodies to Coxiella burnetii was highest in cattery-confined breeding cats (9.3%).
