Introduction Liver tumors constitute a major global health burden. Primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma, HCC) is the sixth most common malignancy worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related death. Unfortunately, HCC is often detected late – only about 30% of patients are diagnosed at an early stage amenable to curative treatment by resection or transplantation (1). Consequently, overall survival remains poor.
