Cytomegalovirus (CMV) has been referred to as the “troll of transplantation” given its ability to cause direct and indirect complications despite preventive and therapeutic efforts [1]. Direct effects include CMV syndrome and tissue-invasive disease of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, lung, and other organs; indirect effects include allograft rejection, graft loss, and other opportunistic infections [2].
Our objective was to determine the incidence and clinical manifestations of acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) in HIV-infected patients. A prospective longitudinal study including HIV-infected HEV-seronegative patients was conducted; HEV seroconversion (to IgG and/or IgM) was the main outcome variable. All patients were tested for HEV antibodies every 3–6 months.
