Commentary: Zoning reforms, more investment needed to make SC housing affordable
The Lowcountry is growing — quickly — at three times the national average, more than 30 people move to Charleston every day. Businesses are opening their doors in our community, bringing in more revenue and — whether we like it or not — more people. However, this rapid growth drives up the demand for housing, which raises the cost of living and makes it harder for families to make ends meet. Charleston is a place we all take pride in. It’s one of the best cities in America and the world.
Commentary: Don’t let petty politics hold up SC hate crimes bill again
The S.C. House of Representatives last week passed the Clementa C. Pinckney Hate Crimes Act, a victory for justice in our state. The bill would add penalty enhancements to violent crimes when victims are targeted because of their race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, disability or other factors. Forty-eight states already have a hate crimes law on the books. Yet South Carolina, the site of one of the most infamous hate crimes in the 21st century, is without one.
Commentary: 7 years after Emanuel shooting, gun violence is still ripping apart our communities
This year’s anniversary of the Emanuel AME Church shooting feels different than years past. The recent scourge in gun violence across our country has ripped apart communities much like ours was ripped apart seven years ago. Too many towns and cities are joining a list that nobody wants to be on. There are too many empty chairs at our kitchen tables. Too many empty desks at school and work. Too many parents burying their children. It’s too much.
Commentary: SC must act now to prevent more jail deaths
Our community was shaken this month by the video of a black, mentally ill man who died after deputies used pepper spray and numerous electric shocks on him at the Charleston County jail. It was disturbing and shocking and has driven calls for change to prevent it from happening again. For me, this was personal. Jamal Sutherland was one of my constituents. And mental illness has pervaded my life, eventually taking the life of my brother. My brother was a good man.
Commentary: We need leaders who will fight for justice
A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Both a priest and a Levite saw this man and decided to walk past him. But a Samaritan came to where he was, and when he saw him, he went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.

Gina Ortiz Jones US House TX-23 “An Air Force Veteran, Gina Ortiz Jones ran a pioneering and very close race in 2018 in a key, fast-evolving Texas Congressional district. Now it's an open seat, and her style of leadership is needed on Capitol Hill more than ever.
Commentary: SC can define the 2020 presidential race
South Carolina will play a decisive role in the 2020 presidential election. Holding the nation’s most diverse early primary, our state can define the issues and propel the best candidate to the head of the ticket for an equally diverse Democratic Party. A lot is riding on our choice. As we assess the candidates’ plans and weigh elusive factors like electability, we should also be clear-headed about the costs of new social programs and the burdens that could fall on working families.
Commentary: SC should thirst for its own Safe Drinking Water Act
Millions of people across America, including thousands of South Carolinians, are at serious risk because of dangerous chemicals in our drinking water. This risk is exacerbated by current laws and regulations that don’t adequately protect us. Toxins such as PFOA and PFOS and such compounds linked to cancer as chromium 6 (see Erin Brockovich chemical) and 1,4 dioxane are currently unregulated.
Moore op-ed: We must stop the radical agenda in our state capitals
Our political system is broken. The temptation to direct our anger at Washington, D.C., is an easy one. But doing so misses the real culprit. The most radical policies of the past two weeks didn't come from Washington. They came from state capitals. In the aftermath of the new abortion bans in Georgia, Alabama and Missouri, South Carolinians have joined with Americans everywhere in fear, sadness and outrage.
Opinion: Drilling off our coast is too risky for South Carolina
The Lowcountry I call home is a place entirely at odds with the dirty and risky development of offshore drilling, yet that’s exactly what the federal government intends to bring to our Atlantic coast. The expansion of offshore drilling will only expose our communities and environment to harm. The Trump administration needs to take the Atlantic Ocean off the table as an option for drilling altogether and prioritize protecting our existing coastal industries instead.
Commentary: 'Walk with me' to make a difference for South Carolina
Less than a year ago I was a restaurant general manager who decided to take a leap of faith and focus full-time as owner and chef of my catering company. That was an arduous undertaking itself. Fast-forward a few weeks later. After some soul-searching, I realized my passion was to serve in public office. At first glance, it might seem an unlikely combination: chef and public servant.
