Articles by Jack Engelhard
Afternoon of a writer-part 2
American communism then and now. That ought to be the big story and yet it appears nowhere in the media. Simply this…once upon a time in America, during the 1950s, you would not become mayor of New York City IF YOU WERE A COMMUNIST. You would be in JAIL. Back then, during the McCarthy era, you would be blacklisted if you were suspected of being a communist. Today, it’s cool, right? So it is up to me to break the news, and the commentary?
Afternoon of a writer
Jack Engelhard writes a regular column for Arutz Sheva. Engelhard wrote the international bestselling novel “Indecent Proposal," today a classic for literature and film. His “Days of the Bitter End" is cited as the greatest work about the 1960s, comparable to Tolstoy’s War and Peace. His latest book, “Writings," offers a collection of his varied and widely popular columns. From John W.
Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn
Antisemitism will always be with us. Of this I am sure. People are so upset about the rise in antisemitism throughout the world, and even throughout the United States. As if this is something new under the sun. It has been with us every year for thousands of years, so what do you expect this year? Count your blessings, and don’t be a fool. I am being asked why this keeps happening.
Cigars, Churchill to Netanyahu, a love story
Frankly, I do not cover Israeli politics as closely as I should, so I am not up to the latest so far as Benjamin Netanyahu and the small-time court case that keeps dogging the Jewish prime minister. Supposedly, as he’s been leading the nation against enemies on all fronts, he has been forced to sit and answer questions as to his personal lifestyle. For instance, does he accept gifts that are over and above an acceptable limit, the sort that come with the job elsewhere.
Media madness
A friend who goes back with me to the days when I served as an American war correspondent in Israel, asks me if I changed anything. Yes, I tried, but they left Israel the same way they came, with a chip on the shoulder. I tried reasoning with some of them. Rashi talks about this, concerning 10 of those 12 Spies…that as they entered Canaan with evil in their hearts, so they left, unchanged. The Evil Report was destined. A few times I succeeded with my group of sour pusses.
Yes to Israel tough guy
I’ve been hearing it on the internet, and from people sending me nasty emails, the message that Israel is acting too tough. How can I, a nice guy like me, support this? You bet I support this, even if it means losing friends, and maybe I am not such a nice guy after all.
No room for Commies or Nazis, but have fun while it lasts
Somewhere out there is my favorite of all time. Sure, I can say the same for maybe 200 more. I’m talking specifically about my Meyer Lansky column, the one where Jews of all kinds, rose up to be counted. Lansky was first among equals so far as Murder Inc. In a world of gangsters dominated by Italian Americans, the Jewish mob was no slouch. As the saying goes, they loved their mothers. These Jews were tough, and they were styled right here in America.
Hitler, Himmler, Mamdani
Heinrich Himmler would have felt quite at home in New York City, 2025. Zohran Mamdani is mayor of the town, with a special disfavor against the Jews whether they live in New York City, or as far away as Jerusalem. Mamdani’s inner circle is filled with people who announce themselves as communists and Jew-haters. Himmler was no communist, but so far as Jew-hating, he ranks near or at the top, and he had the means to act upon his bigotries.
Silly me, I thought Hamas was finished
We know, of course, that the United States demanded unconditional surrender from Japan. There was no “negotiating" with this defeated enemy. Silly me, I thought the same applied with Hamas. I thought Israel would be allowed to finish them off. Now, it turns out, this was not the case. This defeated enemy gets to dictate terms. That is so under the “peace plan" imagined by the White House. More than that, the Palestinian Arabs get to celebrate for themselves a brand new country. Where?
When anti-Trump media went from fact to fiction
That line, “just the facts, ma’am," was popularized by the tv series, Dragnet. You had Sgt. Friday wanting nothing more. Used to be that way in the American media, back in your day and back in my day. Something changed and I am not sure if it was gradual or sudden. Don’t know about you, but I’d rather form my own opinion, just give me both sides of the story. I do not want some pinhead telling me what to think. Who, What, Where, When, Why…the basic rules of journalism.
Mamdani…shades of Hitler
The only thing missing is the smile. Other than that, Mamdani’s obsession against the Jews equals Hitler in rhetorical frenzy. Might even say that Mamdani took the “best" of Hitler’s speeches as nearly word for word inspiration for his own fiery bluster, Jews trapped in the bulls-eye. So hateful is this man Mamdani, sweet smile and all, that we can only wonder if concentration camps await the Jews of New York City. I exaggerate?
Lindsey Graham- this was a Mensch
Sen. Lindsey Graham will be missed by all those who pursue justice. Graham was extraordinarily courageous. He stuck by his convictions as both a patriotic American, and as a lover of Zion. When called upon he could be ferocious. So it was 2018 during the Senate’s Kavanaugh hearings for Supreme Courte Justice, or as I named it in an article I wrote, Dec. 10, 2018… “The Kavanaugh Inquisition…the Story of America 2018." Yes.
Soccer Madness
Seems to me that upon any worldwide sporting event, which features nations that are hateful to Israel, along comes King David to ask an age-old question, such as: Why are the nations in an uproar? I love that line. So pure in thought. So perfectly King David. Further along, he has a warning to those nations that push too far, saying to those miscreants, that G-d has your number, and plays you like a toy…or like a fiddle.
Trump’s successful game of Rope-a-Dope
Now that I’ve got your attention, all you Trump haters out there, welcome, and, bless your hearts. A friend tells me that this headline up above assures me a torrent of clicks, plus a river of hateful rebukes against Trump and me personally. “So, you’re still in Trump’s camp, eh, Jack." Sometimes yes, my friend. Sometimes no. I call it as I see it, day to day. I must say; events move so swiftly so that an opinion that made sense Monday makes no sense Thursday.
Has Trump gone wobbly, or is it me?
,In a recent column, I traced the rise of Donald Trump from entertainer to politician, assuring one success after another. He was a winner, all the way to the top, and in that column, of about a week ago, I was entirely in his corner. This was before he announced the deal he claimed he made with Iran, a deal still mostly under wraps, but that is apparently mostly in their favor. We lost. They won, and most experts are rightly dismayed at the lack of transparency in that deal signed by Trump.
How the media feasts on hatred against Trump
There was a time when Trump was just an ordinary rich guy, a guy who was celebrated for his common touch despite being so rich. He was boastful, bur that made him even more popular because that made him the typical New Yorker. New Yorkers have a special glow, Sinatra style, onto DiMaggio class, then featuring the lords of greatness such as Ali, Namath, Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth, perhaps the biggest name in New York history, bold, brash, a touch of swagger so New York, The winner and the king of it all.
Dems desperately seeking Sports Talking men
Apparently. the Democrat partly has had enough of men who do not know the language of men, such as Sports. Football, baseball, basketball, boxing, yes, that is how we converse, and pal around, and make friends. The Democrats need friends desperately. For too long the leadership has attracted men soft on crime, soft on borders, soft on Israel, soft on pretzels, and just plain Soft, So the call has gone out to bring on men who know how to jive locker-room.
The summer of our discontent
Save yourself the heartache and keep away from social media over the past two weeks, for there you will find commentary reminiscent of 1930s Germany. Is it that bad here in the USA, 2026, among our darling right-wing conservative elites? Pretty bad. I was not prepared for what I came across, on YouTube alone, just the other day when, as usual, I thought I’d check in on my friends.
Goose-stepping at The New York Times
As soon as you think it’s over, they pull you back in. Is there any way to write this column, in which Times columnist Nicholas Kristof accuses Israelis of rape against Palestinian Arabs, while keeping the prose cool and detached? A column like Kristof’s deserves a SCREAM. No doubt this blood libel was written to counter and even the score against a news item, heavily sourced, which documents the rape culture among Palestinian Arabs. Quickly, Kristof went to press as damage control.
What would Churchill do?
Churchill’s rousing speech before the House of Commons, May 13, 1940, was his first address before the House as prime minister, and there was no time to lose. Hitler already counted France as his first major trophy. Next would be Poland, eventually leaving Britain naked and alone to face this monstrosity. Lend Lease thankfully with the colossal United States helped somewhat, but was no answer against the terrible might of Hitler’s gargantuan fighting machine.
Writers in search of a headline
No kidding, I said to this guy we all refer to as Buster for the way he goes busting through the stories he must hand in once a day to the newspaper. Good or bad, right or wrong, he must comply, the contract says so. Suppose there comes a day when there is no news? Like today. Are you serious, asks Buster? Israel is at war on all fronts, dear Jake. That’s my point. So that is not news. Buster got up this morning facing the same conclusion, which is why he, and the rest of us are in a panic.
The Mullah’s secret weapon-godlessness
President Trump finds himself in a quandary for which, as of this writing, there appears no way out What he has before him, thanks to US/Israel military prowess, is a defeated enemy, which is good, but this enemy does not seem to care whether it lives or dies, which is confounding. Trump offers them chance after chance to formally surrender, but they mock him, as if they have got the upper hand. Which is ridiculous.
Historic exchange between Engelhard and NY Times
Part One of Two Seems that Tom Friedman is reluctant to cheer for US/Israel victory over Iran since that would satisfy Trump and Netanyahu. Friedman hates both leaders. What bothers him? His bulls-eye over the years has been Israel. Nothing Israel does makes him happy. Total capitulation to the Arab side, would that make him happy? I’d rather not ask. But years ago I did throw out a letter to Abe Rosenthal, editor in chief at The New York Times and therefore the top newspaperman in America.
The campaign to blame Israel
Naturally, blame the Jews. Word keeps floating throughout YouTube that Israel pushed the United States into this war, as if Trump has no mind of his own. As If Netanyahu phones Trump and says, “Now here is what I want you to do." “I am so glad you called, Bibi. Without you I am lost. Now go ahead and give me my orders." Is that how it goes? I hear you saying, “Don’t be ridiculous, Jack.’ Who, me?
My Holocaust memoir that never was
My Holocaust memoir that never was My sister Sarah reminds me that it was at this time, 1944, that we arrived in Philadelphia, my family among other Survivors. What timing! The first days of Passover. We were delivered via the Serpa Pinto, famously, The Ship of Hope. Now we were in the hands of HIAS and other such rescue agencies, the Jews the devil forgot. We were the lucky ones, Mother used to say, weeping. The story goes that the Rebbe came over on the same ship, but different, earlier voyage.
Pogrom impulses coming to a podcast near you
Since it has been happening for more than 3,000 years, I suppose there is no reason why it should suddenly end now. Pogroms, of course, and there is no country in the civilized world where Jews were spared from the blood-thirsty ritual. I could name any country, but I will bring up France because it is the country of my birth, and there, from 1894 until 1906, the entire country was in turmoil from the Dreyfus Affair.
Oscars in the time of War
What a lovely thing to be an American while somewhere out there a war is raging for the defense of America, and the world, and for the survival of Israel. A reader from Israel, my friend the Rebbetzin, 84, informs me that she has been spending her days in and out of bomb shelters, but that the mood in Israel is positive. Back here, meanwhile, we are still discussing the Oscars. War? Oh yeah. So typical between our world and the world out there, Israel, for instance, where it is about survival.
Dear Megyn -
Dear Megyn, Israel is not in this for hegemony, but for its very existence. How goes it for those mullahs over there in Iran? Terrific. So says Saagar Enjeti, a well-known podcaster, they tell me, who appeared on the Megyn Kelly podcast to discuss the war. Yes, this expert believes that practically all the cards are falling against us, USA/Israel, but in favor of the enemy. Megyn? How is she taking to this dark assessment? She’s game. This fast-talking dude is quite convincing.
Trump echoes MacArthur’s call for unconditional surrender
For President Trump, the war has already been won, except, perhaps, for the knockout punch that would bring the mullahs down on their knees. In other words, unconditional surrender. Of the sort that played out so dramatically September 2, 1945 on the massive battleship USS Missouri, itself a symbol of American power, when General Douglas MacArthur had it assured as a done deal for Japanese officers and officials to come forward, one by one, to sign the articles of surrender.
A time for war
Be prepared for a stew of rage and falsehoods as the United States and Israel continue to strike Iran’s ballistic missile program. There will be marches, and even riots protesting Operation Epic Fury/Roaring Lion mostly against Israel. These will be coming from the left and extreme right. The left? Obviously. The Democratic Party here in the United States, for instance, is not what it used to be since it has swayed toward Ilhan Omar and her clan.
Jack Hughes wins Olympics gold for USA. He is Jewish.
Jack Hughes’s name is already in the history books. He scored a goal that will be remembered for the ages. Hughes, 24, broke the tie in overtime for a 2 to 1 USA win over Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics. This earned USA the gold…the first since 1980’s everlasting ‘’Miracle on Ice.’’ Legends are made of this. Think Sandy Koufax. Yes, that sweet shot of Hughes was heard around the world. It broke Canada’s heart.
Sometimes, one chance is all you get
F. Scott Fitzgerald put it like this. There are no second acts in American lives. Indeed so, for Fitzgerald himself. After a huge success as chronicler of the Jazz Age, everything fell apart. His first novel, “This Side of Paradise," made him a top rank literary star. The good times seemed without end, but end they did. From boom to bust. He lost his touch as a novelist in New York and got no luck as a screenwriter in Hollywood.
Ingrates at the 2026 Olympics
Thanks to YouTube commentator Matt Walsh, we count at least four American ingrates at these winter Olympics, which is not so bad. During a previous Olympics, in Tokyo, I counted dozens of such athletes who dished dirt against their country in front of the cameras. Americans, and only Americans, did this. “Activist Athlete" is what they called themselves.
Streets paved with garbage
If you came to New York City for streets paved with gold, behold, garbage. New Yorkers have no taste for this. Say as you will, but New Yorkers are a proud bunch. “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere." As expressed by Frank Sinatra. “I’m walking here," as expressed by Dustin Hoffman, in the movie, “Midnight Cowboy," co-starring the sensational Jon Voight. I do not think that line was part of the original script. It just happened, as do most things in New York City.
Thoughts on Minneapolis
Are those the best we’ve got over in Minneapolis? Or is this as good as it gets? I am not persuaded that the rioting by the burghers against ICE is for the love of illegal immigrants. Follow the money. That is number one. Number two. Follow the media. Together they amount to the singular rage to dump Trump, by hook or by crook. Call it what it is…insurrection. Defined as “A violent uprising against an authority or government," and it sure looks like that to me. How about you?
Does Trump own Gaza?
Let me first say that I have always been a fan of Donald Trump, and so it is to this day, and so I forgive his mistakes. Such as his Board of Peace, which sounds good, until you realize that for a start, his big, beautiful plan forgets one thing…Israel. Unless I am missing something. I am missing the part where Israel gets to call the shots per Gaza, since this is, after all, Israeli territory. It isn’t? Yes, it is.
Trump - no more Mr. Nice Guy
Greenland all of a sudden? Yes, Trump wants Greenland, and since I am a betting man, my money says he is going to get it one way or another. Consider it a fait accompli. Who knew? Until Trump mentioned it, nobody gave Greenland a second thought. Did you get up in the morning and say to your wife, ‘" Sweetheart, we must have Greenland." But Trump has put it on the table as an issue of national importance, and there is not a minute to lose to get this done, and now we all say…Greenland or bust.
Gaza, déjà vu all over again?
We read that Trump is ready to implement PHASE TWO of his big and beautiful Gaza Plan. Generally, in Trump we trust, but in this instance his instincts may be a touch unreliable. Thus, we ask, can this be true? Thousands of Palestinian Arabs are being trained to police and to administer Gaza as part of a reconstruction project. The suggested "Board of Peace" is unacceptable to Netanyahu. It is being called transitional governance. Which sounds terrific.
Is Tucker Carlson the most dangerous antisemic radical of all?
Maybe I haven’t been paying attention, at least not enough to know who is in, who is out in the game we call politics. Straight to the point…which Jew-hater is to be feared the most at this time in our history? People I trust tell me it is Tucker Carlson. That is so because he finds Israel and the Jews guilty for almost everything, and he has got a large following to make his case. I buy the argument. The danger is that he is effective. He is a good salesman. The Jews are his merchandise.
When journalism was alive in New York City
Those were the days, my friend. I doubt they will ever come round again, the way we were, back when newspaper columnists bled on the page. They wrote in the first person, and so created the New Journalism…vibrant writing for a vibrant town. Jimmy Breslin would leave it to Krock at The New York Times to write presidential, while he wrote about ordinary New Yorkers. His style rocked and rolled…and in every column you felt his sweat. You smelled the aroma of those cigars.
What to look for in 2026, as if I know
Speaking frankly, it could have been worse. I have been combing predictions from years past and find myself as smart and as stupid as everybody else. It is always a guess. More than that…it is always a prayer. Dear God…keep us safe. Keep us from people like Joe Biden who nearly wrecked us all, America, Israel, the world, through four years of incompetence, misery and plain meanness. Doddering old fool? Not quite.
Anatomy of a Pogrom
The beloved founder and leader of Rise and Shine USA, Ronnie Roberts, was struck in the neck by an assassin’s bullet, and died almost immediately. But before his last breath, he did utter some final words. This message was so profound that it set off a revolt within the Conservative Movement. One person heard him say, “May G-d protect Israel.
Out in the cold with Ben Shapiro
To be or not to be a Conservative Zionist. Apparently, it is one or the other. You cannot be both at the same time. Have I made this simple enough? I have made this so simple that we can all now go home? But wait a minute because there is more, or less. As evidence to the proposition that less is more, we find the gallant Ben Shapiro addressing a gathering of fellow Conservatives at Turning Point, USA. Turning Point, USA was Charlie Kirk’s baby. So Shapiro spoke for about 20 minutes.

The trojan horse of immigration
The Bondi Beach massacre, of our brothers and sisters, comes after Western European leaders declared their support for a “Palestinian” state. Among them was Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, which means?
Is antisemitism humanity’s default position?
Rick goes back with me to those days when journalism was an honorable profession, which it is no more, especially in terms of antisemitism. He says, “Is it really that bad?” We had both worked as newspapermen for competing newspapers. We were friends. The topic of religion never came up. He was Catholic. I was Jewish. So what? Been years since we’d been in touch, until he phoned. “Jack,” he says.
Taking out the garbage in Minnesota
President Trump has had enough. A majority of Americans have had enough of Ilhan Omar’s ingratitude. So last week, Trump minced no words. He came straight out and called her “garbage,” and then called “her friends” also garbage. No doubt he was referring to her fellow Somalis out there in Minneapolis who number at around 100,000, and do nothing “but complain,” according to Trump.
The unease among America Jews is truly remarkable
Unease among American Jews? Must say, this caught me by surprise. Aliya is one thing, and a wonderful thing…but this is something else altogether. This is escaping in the dark of night with your tail between your legs. What to do with all those Jewish graves for the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War Two? Jewish contributions to America run far and wide…and go back to the very beginning. Some 17 Jewish soldiers were awarded Medals of Honor during and after Lincoln’s time.
Bill Maher, a stand-up guy for Israel
A reader writes: “Dear Mr. Engelhard. I happen to be a big fan of Bill Maher and always felt that he never got his due among us Conservatives. ‘’Until I came across your brilliant piece about him in the collection of your op-eds in Writings.
Epstein, the media’s flavor of the month
We all remember that time, not so long ago, when all over the media it was Russia…Russia…Russia. Hillary Clinton and Adam Schiff wanted Trump’s head on a platter, and since over the years nothing else seemed to work, let it be another fake story. Let it be Trump and Russia, with the media carrying the story flagrantly, accusingly, hysterically. Russia…Russia…Russia. It was a witch hunt, and it was doomed. Trump was clean, no matter how hard they tried to frame him and nail him. Now what?
