I Made This Just for You
Chris Ames’s fiction recalls an old Betoota Advocate meme that depicts a stock photo of a young man smiling widely as he watches something on his laptop. It’s accompanied by a caption along the lines of: “Man unwinds from eight hours of staring at a screen by staring at a slightly different one.” What does all that staring do to his dreams? The stories in Chris Ames’s debut collection, I Made This Just for You, are those dreams.
The Terrible
On a spring afternoon in 2018, the man leaves Tretyakovskaya station in Moscow unable to remember why he’d come. His backpack, light on his shoulders, contains Dostoevsky’s The Double and a change of clothes. He hadn’t planned a long stay. He has no official business, no friends to visit. That morning he awoke from troubled dreams in his Voronezh apartment and travelled to the railway station and booked a seat for the next train to Moscow.
One Story
You may be forgiven a shiver of schadenfreude when told the premise of Pip Finkemeyer’s One Story: a tech billionaire flees Silicon Valley to hide in Indonesia from criminal charges for exploiting user data. If real-world lawmakers lag behind the tech companies and chief executives who find ever more creative ways to manipulate us online, at least we can have our revenge in fiction.
Visualizing Victory: Inside Jason Koon’s Relentless Mindset
Jason Koon is currently battling at EPT Barcelona, where he just finished second in the €25K PLO High Roller for €268,400. Jack Stanton caught up with the PokerStars Ambassador a few weeks ago, not long after he took down his second bracelet at the 2025 World Series of Poker, to discuss how visualising success has helped him achieve his goals, and why he feels he has no choice but to be the best.
Grub
The gastronomic temple Grub made headlines a few years back for serving Sydney’s bored pleasure-seekers a Mediterranean dreamfish that caused diners to hallucinate for several days. Since then, Grub opened bookings once a year, an event earmarked in the calendars of a thousand stressed PAs, and the prices grew if not prohibitive, then as gluttonous as the clientele.
Irish Open 2025 is underway! Follow the action
The Irish Open is back with a bigger festival than ever before... watch_later 68 Minute Read THERE’S ONLY ONE… SIMON WILSON. ONE… SIMON WILSON. WALKING ALONG, SINGING A SONG. WALKING IN A WILSON WONDERLAND. Local lad Simon Wilson had one of the all-time great poker rails at the final table of the largest Irish Open Main Event in the festival’s 45-year history. You simply couldn’t move on his side of the table. And in the end, his skill and home-court advantage proved too much for everyone.
Let’s say you program a thinking machine to plant sunflowers all over the Earth. Using artificial intelligence, the machine set out to cover the world, eventually realising its biggest obstacles are humanity and concrete. To solve this problem, the thinking machine invests its intelligence in eradicating humanity, destroying every trace of our architecture, so that it can plant flowers in peace.

Pretty Vacant - A letter from New York | Neighbourhood Paper
Cruising Madison Avenue is a supreme form of capitalist seduction. The retail equivalent of a Hollywood smile. Each luxury store is inviting, flawless, gleaming with a sparkle or two. Only now, some teeth are missing. Vacancies are staying that way, often for years, the city’s face looks haggard. This retail rot is a new form of urban blight. Rust Belt towns with boarded-up Main Streets due to capital flight and evaporating jobs are easily understood.
Hometown teams dominate MIAA

The new approach keeping Aboriginal children out of child protection
In Australia, Aboriginal children have been long over-represented in child protection systems – including in the state of Victoria. Here, the rates are the highest in the country and they are increasing. Child protection systems are state procedures and measures for the protection and advancement of child welfare and child wellbeing emphasised in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) of 1989.
Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton| The Saturday Paper
A decade has passed since Eleanor Catton became the youngest writer to win the Booker Prize for The Luminaries. A work about a murder conspiracy set in 1866 New Zealand during the gold rush, it was rich with dramatic exuberance and stylish bravado. With Birnam Wood, Catton has created a novel of duplicity and intrigue that befits its titular allusion to Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Fiction and dreams have a complicated, even toxic, relationship. Fiction is already a simulation of reality, with varying degrees of fidelity to The Real; and likewise, the process of reading, much like dreaming – and indeed writing – involves a theatrical envisioning of images in the mind. But dreams are maligned as narrative devices.

Basin
In Scott McCulloch’s debut novel Basin, an aimless nomad called Figure traverses an interminable landscape that feels similar to the impossible staircase in Escher’s lithograph Ascending and Descending. Figure roams the territories bordering the Black Sea, forever moving onwards and forever circling back onto himself. His wayward journey recalls a bad dream: “I feel I’m a ghost who’s wandered into the odyssey of a lunatic,” he reflects.

4 takeaways from Phil Hellmuth’s No Jumper podcast interview
Back to articles October 5, 2021 | Jack Stanton Share Phil Hellmuth’s legend status in poker cannot be disputed. Say what you will about the Hall of Famer’s patented ‘White Magic’ playing style, but the man gets results and has been doing so for 34 years. He’s got more than $25 million in career cashes, according to HendonMob, placing him 21st on the all-time money list, and since winning the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event back in 1989 he’s gone on to win a total of 15 WSOP bracelets.

Now it’s the great vape conspiracy
The ongoing conflation of vaping and tobacco industry e-cigarettes is an intentional misdirection and a dangerous one. The strongest observation John Safran makes in his book Puff Piece is that the tobacco giant Philip Morris International has bastardised language to reinvent itself as a health and wellness tech start-up.

Young writers may turn to the page for catharsis – for writing-as-therapy – but that’s not why we read them. The ageist view, that a writer mustn’t pen their memoirs until they are older and learned, neglects the breadth of excellent work by precocious writers who have a story to tell. Naïveté and inexperience can enchant, sometimes more so than brilliant craftsmanship or intellectual maturity.
Sam Grafton is all about trying new things
“It’s great being in Brazil,” says Sam Grafton from his apartment in Rio de Janeiro, where he recently moved. “I’m really happy to be here. You’ve got the timezone for poker, the weather, the beach, it’s really nice. Naturally, I got sunburned on the very first day I was here.” Tanning aside, it’s a busy time for the man known as “SamSquid”.
No Jumper's Adam22 doesn’t play poker for thrills. He plays to win.
Back to articles January 12, 2021 | Jack Stanton Right off the bat, It’s clear how much Adam Grandmaison — better known as Adam22 — loves the game of poker. Just a few minutes into my conversation with the creator and host of the No Jumper podcast, he pauses and eagerly tells me he has pocket aces and an opponent has just shoved into him for 100 big blinds. Yep, he’s playing poker as we speak.
Consequences Of 5th District Race Are Enormous
I’ve followed the 5th Barnstable District state representative race for several months now. While the presidential contest dominates the airwaves, in terms of consequence, the race for our next state rep might actually be the most important vote one casts in November. Our complex local issues are on the ballot. As a longtime resident of this community and as a former candidate myself, I am deeply invested in who will be representing us on Beacon Hill. Funding for our idyllic peninsula is at stake.
Are bad habits making you sad?
In any bestseller list you’re bound to find titles that sound familiar, the likes of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a Fuck or The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck or Unfuck Yourself. I’m sure people are getting dizzy with the glut of titular ‘fuckedness’. These titles sound familiar because they’re supposed to; risk-aversion and repetition are the publishing industry’s heart of darkness.
SM14 winner Alex “AAAArthur” Brito on turning $4 into $1.1 million: “Believe me, you must never give up. I’m an example.”

Sunday Million 14th Anniversary: Who will be streaming?
Using multiple monitors is pretty common amongst poker players. For the likes of Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier and Randy ‘Nanonoko’ Lew, it was essential for them to play 24 cash game tables at a time. We’ve also seen the likes of former PokerStars Ambassador Daniel Negreanu and poker player/NBA-bettor extraordinaire Haralabob Voulgaris flaunt their multi-screen set-ups when watching sports at home.
