A Jewish Perspective On Christmas
'Tis the season. Even at a school like Binghamton, which is not so arguably, very Jewish, Christmas is in the air as soon as Halloween ends. Winter break is all that is on anyone's mind. Some even call it "Christmas break." When people found out that finals this semester went up until the 22nd, they were in an outrage. Many of my friends were upset they couldn't have the week to go Christmas shopping with their siblings or families, and that they only had two days to prepare for Christmas.
More Than Just A Model
Karlie Kloss has made headlines for her appearances in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and her on - point fashion choices at red carpet events. She's appeared on countless runways. It turns out, she is also an entrepreneur, philanthropist, student, and...avid coder. Coding? Isn't that some computer science thing that nerds do? Well, guess what.
Dress Up Or Dress Down: Fall Trends 2015
If you go to school in any place that experiences all four seasons (from the blistering summer to the wrath of below-freezing winters), then your Autumn will most likely start off nice and warm, ending with a slightly chilly, crisp quality to the air. Fall can be a tricky season to shop for, with its pronounced weather change that all Northeasterners dread, signaling that winter is, indeed, coming (Game of Thrones joke anyone?).
"Sorority Girls Love Being Objectified"
“Yeah, they totally do...” continued another friend on my Birthright trip this summer. We were picking crops on a kibbutz in Israel when I overheard this disturbing statement. I was finding it hard to believe my friends were capable of making such a degrading and ignorant statement. Instead of going with my gut reaction (screaming at them about how offensive the assertion was), I kept my thoughts to myself until I was calm enough to have an actual discussion.
11 Reasons To Drink Coffee Before Your Workout
It’s Monday morning, and I drag my groggy self out of bed to go to the gym. I have 15 minutes to get to my yoga class, and I’m still insanely tired. So I run by the dining hall on my way to the class and pick up a coffee. As I’m walking to the gym, coffee in one hand, water bottle in the other, I wonder if drinking coffee before exercising is a bad idea. I already know that the notion that coffee dehydrates you is a myth, but I know nothing about the effects of caffeine on exercising.
When You Realize Your Younger Siblings Have Grown Up
When you're little, the only thing that matters to you is the toys. As a kid, when something came around that took your toys away, that was it. Younger siblings fell under that category of "something." Cue immediate ridiculous tantrums, complete with hitting, screaming, and the throwing of whatever toys were still in your possession. At least that's what it was like in my house, considering I had not one, but two smaller humans stealing my toys and my parents' attention.
12 Reasons Rushing Will Change Your Life
As a second year or older student, you've probably adjusted to Binghamton over the past year +. You might think you've discovered most things Bing has to offer you. Well, if you haven't at least considered greek life or attending rush week, you're missing out on something that could end up as one of the best decisions of your college career.
Fall Trends Through The Decades
Fall has finally arrived! Autumn is an awesome season of gorgeous tree colors, an excuse to wear more black, and the official end of bikini season. To celebrate all these changes, I thought we could look back at Fall trends through the decades, for some laughs and possibly some inspiration as you venture into this new season.
7 Reasons New Yorkers Love The Yankees
Even after the Yankees' disappointing shut-out loss, 3-0 to the Astros, it's hard to let them go. If you're a New Yorker, you know this struggle. This season has been a rough one for Yankee players and fans alike, but as a New Yorker, I still can't get enough of them. You know that you'll never be able to pick a different favorite team. Derek Jeter's smile will pull you back every time, and set you straight on who your favorite team really is.
Open Letter To All Miley Cyrus Haters
Miley Cyrus has been called every name in the book: phony, fake, dumb, self-obsessed, boy-crazy, promiscuous, a bad influence, psychotic, you name it. With her radical change from the Hannah Montana era Miley to the "Blurred Lines" post-VMAs Miley, she's received endless questions and -- what seems to me -- criticism. With every change she makes (even something as insignificant as a haircut), she's ripped to shreds by every pop culture commentator and their mother.
11 Crazy Foods You Can Find In NYC
New York City: the city of dreams -- and really crazy food. As a NYC native, I know that just when you think you've seen it all, New York throws something new your way. The food is no exception. So if you live in NYC, or have some time over winter break, consider stepping out of your culinary comfort zone and trying some of these awesome dishes that are just part of what makes New York City so unique. Looks like a dessert, but really, it's a bagel.
Something To Read When You're Feeling Down
We've all been there. Fall is slowly creeping into winter as it gets a little colder out every day. The clocks turn back, so we technically get an extra hour of sleep, but it doesn't really feel like that, and it definitely doesn't make a difference in the life of a perpetually exhausted college student. You wake up and it's kind of gloomy-looking outside. You get out of class and it's already dark. This is when the college blues start to get you down.
5 Non-Pumpkin Related Foods To Try This Fall
With the onset of Fall, us North-easterners find ourselves surrounded by falling leaves, a refreshing chill in the air, and pumpkin spice everything. Every food franchise and their mother likes to jump on this seasonal bandwagon, beating it to death. From pumpkin spice lattes to doughnuts to M&M's to lasagna (seriously, find it here) this trend seems inescapable in the Fall. But where does that leave the seemingly minute fraction of us New Englanders who aren't pumpkin spice fans?
From Hero To Zero In 10.91 Seconds
London, 2012: Fluorescent lights shine down on the clay track. 8 runners line up for their 400m race in a stadium filled to the brim with onlookers. Most eyes, though, are on the runner in yellow and green. They call him “the fastest man on no legs”. This is a big race for Oscar Pistorius, and though he is eliminated in the semi-finals, he has made history as the first amputee to compete in track at the Olympics.
End-Of-The-Semester Woes
Your mom calls you to ask when you're going to be done with finals and what day you're going to be home so she can cook or order your favorite dinner. This is when you realize first semester is almost over. Whether you're a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, the realization hits you hard all the same. You then go through the subsequent feelings and appropriate reactions to said realization.
