Help me buy a watch
TLDR: I want it cheap, analog, easy to read and does not require a battery. going on Amazon or Walmart and searching is just too annoying, for example no matter how hard I try, the results bring up watches that require batteries. And using Alexa brings up watches that are much more than I want to spend. I’m also more than a little cranky at how most are divided up by gender and those for a woman are smaller or otherwise harder to read.
Randolph Mantooth (Johnny Gage on "Emergency!") has died
July 11, 2026, 12:18am 1 Actor Randolph Mantooth, whose signature role was as Los Angeles County paramedic Johnny Gage in the 1970s television series Emergency!, passed away yesterday, at age 80; his brother announced that Mantooth died in a hospice facility after a lengthy illness. Mantooth had a long career in television, and in addition to Emergency!, was a regular on several daytime soap operas in the '80s and '90s.

December 22, 2025, 5:17pm 1 My list of Christmas albums often changes from year to year. Here’s my top five in Dec 2025. Ella Fitzgerald’s Christmas 13 traditional sacred hymns. Angels We Have Heard on High, Hark the Herald Angel, O Holy Night, The First Noel, God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman etc. Anne Murray - What a Wonderful Christmas 2001 28 Christmas Songs. Silver Bells, Winter Wonderland, I’ll be Home for Christmas, Little Drummer Boy, Joy to the World etc. Mantovani Christmas 30 Christmas songs.
What kind of humidifier should I get?
I want one just for my bedroom since my poor nostrils get sore during heating season (despite spraying saline up them frequently, which does help a little). I’ve googled and read blogs and read the others threads on this subject, none of which are recent. I don’t like cleaning them but I know you have to. I have hard water so I think filter free is a bad idea since I also hate to lug home distilled water.
My cat has been put to sleep, and it might be my fault
October 12, 2025, 1:19pm 1 He was walking in circles and behaving oddly, so my mom took him to the pet hospital. No issues, seemed fine so she went on a trip. Then I noticed he seemed dopey, and it got worse as time went on. He wasn’t eating, seemed sluggish, so I took him to the vet a few days later. They said he seemed fine too, but he kept getting worse. Yesterday mom came home and we took him back to the hospital, and decided with the vet’s advice to have him put to sleep today.
Help me choose a vacuum and not get a swiffer
TLDR: new house, no carpets, decision-making part of my brain is super tired out, only big box store nearby is Home Depot. Realtor said I needed to get a swiffer since mopping is too wet for it. I spent way too much time just deciding which hoses/sprinklers to get and need to save my brain power for which Electrician to hire and which Plumber and so on. My preference is canister, don’t mind cords, but bag or no bag, HEPA filter? etc.
New Cheap PC for Windows 11 or supporting Discourse discussion {Also obsoleting Browsers & OP systems}
April 3, 2025, 4:26pm 1 Continuing the discussion from Apparently I'm going to be kicked off the boards (Discourse upcoming incompatibility){New cheap PC posts moved out}: I’m moving a lot of posts out. Note: Many of these posts were relevant, but not helpful to the OP and overwhelming the thread. Better to let people discuss it to death in a non-troubleshooting thread.
Mountain Lion/Cougar on mountain
March 28, 2025, 2:21pm 1 There is a Mountain Lion somewhere behind my house. My dogs where going ape shit and I went out and called them in. Oh my. The Mountain Lion scream is bone chilling. Really. At first I thought it was a woman screaming, but no. I listened, that wasn’t quite right. Then I remembered something about how these big cats sound. Found it on line. Shit. Yup, that’s it. There have been few deaths (25) since 1990. But this is basically in my back yard. It’s where my wife walks the dogs.
Predict the outcome of Trump's Canada obsession
March 19, 2025, 2:33pm 1 By all accounts, Trump is deadly serious about Canada becoming the 51st state. (Let’s assume this is true for the purposes of this discussion.) How is this going to play out? Is he going to give up and quit talking about it? That doesn’t seem like him… Is he going to order a military invasion? Will his generals actually obey such an order? Is he going to hope that the trade war brings Canada to their knees, and they beg us to let them in?
I pit my "new" Kindle now a brick
It’s a Paperwhite from slightly less than 2 years ago so out of warranty but WTF it is too new to not be working. Luckily - by god I have library books to read - I still have a Kindle Fire I replaced because it doesn’t like to hold a charge and now I can read this weekend. But, seriously, not even two years old! I googled what to do - as one does - and the rebooting instructions don’t help.
Care of tiny succulent
November 5, 2024, 4:36pm 1 I haven’t had a houseplant in 5.5 years and was just gifted a baby snake plant (mother in law’s tongue). it is ridiculously important to me that I do my best caring for it. the woman who gave it to me had planted it in some well-draining medium (cactus soil or something) in a red solo cup and she showed me it’s tiny roots. I poked holes in the bottom of the solo cup, then put it inside another container with a bit of gravel under the cup.
Energy Enhancement System, scalar waves - is this legit?
August 27, 2024, 1:04pm 1 my town has one of these places where you pay to use this and I’m not even sure what it is. It really sounds bogus but I wanted to hear what others think.
Cramming for a lab test
August 17, 2024, 3:16pm 1 I have whatever insurance is calling an annual physical next week and am having labs done Monday. I realized I had this unrealistic plan to eat REALLY healthy before the test and now we are down to this weekend. Last year, both my cholesterol and my A1C were slightly higher than is good and I was going to change that over the last year. Instead, I started a job in a kitchen and now I am sneak eating what I have available to me: mostly bacon and fruit smoothies.
Twisters and other Disaster Movies
July 22, 2024, 1:44pm 1 I saw Twisters yesterday and loved it! I tend to love all disaster movies including the ones that are so bad they are funny but this was a good one. If you didn’t like the original, don’t bother, but if you did here is more tornado chasing excitement. (If you want a bad disaster movie that is still fun to watch try “Christmas Twister” it’s a disaster and a Hallmark After School Special combined)
Death of Sibling, legal advice needed
July 17, 2024, 4:45pm 1 my oldest brother died recently in another state and it’s too early to know if he had a will but very likely he did not. I was notified as he listed me as an emergency contact with his apartment building manager.
Why did my coflex bandage stop sticking to itself? Blister Care
July 10, 2024, 4:28pm 1 This is something I’d always called “vet wrap” but inside the roll is written coflex. I’ve kept it around for years so maybe it’s just old but it no longer sticks to itself which is it’s only job. I googled and found things you can do with coflex but nowhere am I finding why it stopped sticking to itself and how I can prevent it happening again. Or maybe even if it’s fixable.

Art installation known as “ The Portal that links NY sidewalk with Dublin temp closed
May 15, 2024, 3:40pm 1 This is an art sculpture. Human behavior is part of the experience. I don’t agree with censoring art. People can and should interact with the sculpture however they want. Just don’t vandalize it. I don’t have any problem with people flashing the camera. Or holding up a political sign. It’s all a form of communication. That’s how the exhibit influenced them. It would be awesome to have a circular sculpture with eight video portals to various cities around the world.
Most iconic food from each state
May 4, 2024, 11:48pm 1 Food Network posted a list of the most iconic food of each state. How do you feel about what they picked for your state? Remember the criteria is “iconic” not best. For New Jersey they didn’t pick bad but it’s not what I would have picked. They picked disco fries. I would have picked a pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich. https://www.foodnetwork.com/restaurants/packages/best-food-in-america/photos/most-iconic-food-united-states
Have you relocated due to Climate Change?
May 3, 2024, 3:48pm 1 I recently finished reading On The Move by Abrahm Lustgarten which is about how climate change migration is already happening and how it will unfold in the US specifically. It’s a scary but interesting book. every fall I dread the coming winter with super short days and I want to move back to a southern, high desert climate. But then I remind myself the SW is rapidly running out of water and so on.
We planted about 100 bulbs yesterday and some critter dug up 30 of them last night
April 10, 2024, 4:24pm 1 Incredibly frustrating, we suspect it is a squirrel but wondering if it was some other animal. I know squirrels bury nuts and suspect he saw us burying nut like objects and decided to steal our stash. Sound reasonable or some other animal a likely suspect? This is in Central Jersey, near the bay shore. The little bastard even dug up a flowering daffodil. We’re going to start putting white stone down Friday or Saturday depending on the delivery of 42 bags.

I'm trying to search for full movies on dailymotion.com
I found dailymotion randomly, looking for a place to stream Finding Nemo for free. No commercials and I didn’t have to sign up for anything, what more do you want? but now I want to see more free movies there and I don’t find a good way to find them, including searching for something specific. when I searched on Von Ryan’s Express, for example, I found two different versions of the last half of the movie, but I didn’t find the first half. I find tons of clips and crap I don’t want to see.
Free android sleep tracking apps
1 what have you tried and what works? I am leaning towards SnoreLab based on brief search on reviews. What I really want to know is, do I snore and how big a problem might it be.
Video of my stand-up comedy about "transgender" (Give me your opinions)
4 As you are not taking my advice in the other thread, I think this is the last time I will offer any, but Take that advice, Stop posting this videos with laugh tracks. That is not standup and it looks and sounds terrible, and You cannot punch down in comedy. It does not work and no one will think you’re funny. You can make fun of groups you are a part of.
Helena has passed on
Per her friend Cow Princess, posted on the Raffe, longtime member of both these boards Helena (Helena330 here) has died. This was not unexpected, as she had a recurrence of cancer and has been in hospice care for a while now. She had to put her kitteh Twig down recently due to illness and I think that took a lot out of her. She was a kind and sweet soul and she will be sorely missed. Blessed be, dear, our love goes with you. giraffeboards.com Helena has passed away General Blah Blah
Breakfast in bed
1 “Breakfast in bed” is one of those things that people do on TV or talk about doing as a luxury/a bit of spoiling. A great start for a Mother’s Day celebration or the beginning of a perfect vacation day or something. I’ve never had it, but it seems like it might be a little awkward and messy (especially if you involve condiments).
Goodreads and alternatives
I did search* on the subject of Goodreads and all the posts were old. The last day or two goodreads has been down more than working and I’m wondering how many of you are still active there and if not, have you found somewhere else to talk about books? I feel like it’s been getting worse over time (too busy?) but that’s so subjective. I have always found the goodreads site problematic, but I love a lot of the people in my groups and want to keep interacting with them.
Which Kindle to buy?
I’ve narrowed it down to the “regular” Kindle, as apparently you can read ANY of the new ones outside in sunlight - or in bed, under the covers - and the Paperwhite (the cheapest version) because it is slightly nicer and waterproof. and is it worth it getting a cover?? But I’d love to hear opinions. So far I’ve googled, as one does, and asked on Giraffe, as one also does. Tride June 16, 2023, 2:10pm 2 I bought the Oasis for no good reason–it’s very nice, but not worth the money.
