Complex systems in the spotlight: next steps after the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics
The 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded ‘for groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems’ with one half jointly to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann and the other half to Giorgio Parisi. As editors of JPhys Complexity we would like to congratulate the Nobel Laureates for their extraordinary achievements that have deeply transformed the way we look at the Earth system and at complex systems in general.

Experimental neural network enhanced quantum tomography
Abstract Quantum tomography is currently ubiquitous for testing any implementation of a quantum information processing device. Various sophisticated procedures for state and process reconstruction from measured data are well developed and benefit from precise knowledge of the model describing state-preparation-and-measurement (SPAM) apparatus. However, physical models suffer from intrinsic limitations as actual measurement operators and trial states cannot be known precisely.
Keep quantum computing global and open
In just a few years, the field of quantum computing has moved swiftly from an academic backwater to a subject of vast public and private interest. The ultimate goal of a ‘universal’ quantum computer — capable of performing any calculation while correcting for noise, faults and disruptions — remains decades away. But billions of dollars are being ploughed into commercializing the first fruits1.
Viewpoint: Pushing Tensor Networks to the Limit
Anastasiia A. Pervishko, Deep Quantum Laboratory, Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Moscow, Russia Jacob Biamonte, Deep Quantum Laboratory, Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Moscow, Russia May 28, 2019• Physics 12, 59 An extension of tensor networks—mathematical tools that simplify the study of complex quantum systems—could allow their application to a broad range of quantum field theory problems.
Quantum machine learning
Long before we possessed computers, human beings strove to find patterns in data. Ptolemy fitted observations of the motions of the stars to a geocentric model of the cosmos, with complex epicycles to explain the retrograde motions of the planets. In the sixteenth century, Kepler analysed the data of Copernicus and Brahe to reveal a previously hidden pattern: planets move in ellipses with the Sun at one focus of the ellipse.
