Strange New Worlds season 4 July 2026 {Please avoid spoilers for at least 8 days}
July 24, 2026, 12:11am 1 Season will conclude around the 60th anniversary of Star Trek. Please be careful about spoilers for a few weeks. I’m watching episode 1 now, off to a good start.
(UK) Count Binface might be the next MP!
July 9, 2026, 2:40pm 1 Viewers of Last Week Tonight might be familiar with Count Binface; a joke / satirical candidate who stands in various elections around the UK, usually getting only a handful of votes. However, there has been a funny turn of events. The UK version of Trump, Nigel Farage, in a bid to avoid accountability for his various grifting scandals, has engaged in the political stunt of resigning his MP position to…participate in an election for the new MP.
Alternative ways (other than steering wheels) for controlling car-like vehicles?
What control/input methods have been attempted for driving cars and car-like machines (tractors, buggies, tanks, etc.) other than steering wheels? The steering wheel makes sense when you’re mechanically steering the drive wheels through shafts and gears, but in today’s power steering and drive-by-wire systems, have any alternatives been explored? This is really just an idle question prompted by my search for a PC gaming steering wheel earlier this morning.
Fictional Birthdays
November 11, 2025, 7:45pm 1 Celebrating the birthdays of fictional characters, of course. Today is the 113th birthday of Woodrow Wilson Smith, aka Lazarus Long. I would say may he live forever…but that would be redundant.
Nuclear subs being deployed by Trump
August 1, 2025, 5:52pm 1 This doesn’t fill me with confidence. Is this more distraction from Epstein? bbc.co.uk US President Donald Trump says two nuclear submarines are being deployed in the "appropriate regions".
Judge Cannon OKs release of special counsel’s report into Trump and election
January 13, 2025, 6:30pm 1 CNN – 13 Jan 25 Judge Aileen Cannon said on Monday that she would not block the release of the special counsel Jack Smith’s report on his investigation into Donald Trump and efforts to overturn the 2020 election. This is my shocked face There’s going to be a hearing to see if Merrick “Sgt. Schultz: I see nothing” Garland can release it to a group of lawmakers. Not sure what she has approved releasing if that’s still in question. Maybe it’s just the classified parts.
Siri Apple Navigation Routes
January 13, 2025, 2:30pm 1 I have a Tom-Tom navigation device. It always chose the fastest route by default, but you could alter it manually. It cautioned against choosing the shortest route because it might mean a lot of streets, lights, and stop signs, and it might track through undesirable areas you would normally avoid. I now use Siri. I’ll say, “Siri, drive to work.” The problem is that Apple navigation, for some reason, chooses the shortest route by default, not the fastest.
The "Gulf of America"? Wth? Can you just change the name of a body of water?
January 7, 2025, 6:54pm 1 Trump is insane. Yeah, old news. You can’t just do that, can you? You can’t just buy Greenland. Can you? Who’s gonna pay for it?
First TV show to openly mention/discuss menstruation?
December 2, 2024, 9:11pm 1 We’re all familiar with the old canard that Leave it to Beaver was (kind of) the first TV show to portray a toilet (and in those repressed and uptight days, even just showing the tank, as they did, caused much pearl-clutching). When did TV decide to ditch the menstruation taboo? I have vague memories of commercials for pads & tampons back in the early 1970s, but that was advertising, and not show content. Does anyone remember the first show to openly discuss menstruation?
Conflict with Russia hypothetical
October 22, 2024, 3:05pm 1 This article happened to catch my eye: Russia’s Alcohol Empire Suffers Devastating Quadruple Blow So, Ukraine has conducted several drone strikes against distilleries that are purportedly involved in producing alcohol used in military fuel production. Okay, that’s a fairly direct approach to warfare, akin to the allies bombing oil fields near Ploesti or ball bearing factories in Schweinfurt.
We planted about 100 bulbs yesterday and some critter dug up 30 of them last night (or maybe the morning.)
April 10, 2024, 4:24pm 1 Incredibly frustrating, we suspect it is a squirrel but wondering if it was some other animal. I know squirrels bury nuts and suspect he saw us burying nut like objects and decided to steal our stash. Sound reasonable or some other animal a likely suspect? This is in Central Jersey, near the bay shore. The little bastard even dug up a flowering daffodil. We’re going to start putting white stone down Friday or Saturday depending on the delivery of 42 bags.
Star Trek Discovery season 5
3 This was not a bad start. The acting often rubs me the wrong way (especially the Captain) but at least this feels like Star Trek. There’s a mystery and adventure. TNG’s The Chase was answering a question they didn’t need to ask but was a good episode of TNG and since it did happen, deserves a followup. I am interested to see what happens next.
Examples of Failed Rebellions Given Official Public Support/Recognition
3 Not so much a rebellion or other civil war, but the losing side of one of the theaters of World War II: Japan en.wikipedia.org The controversies surrounding Yasukuni Shrine are related to the choice of Japanese people to visit this Shinto shrine and war museum in central Tokyo. The shrine is based on State Shinto, as opposed to traditional Japanese Shinto, and has a close history with Statism in Shōwa Japan.
Frances Cobain has married Tony Hawk's son Riley - but that's not the whole story
1 The ceremony was performed by her godfather, R.E.M. singer emeritus Michael Stipe. I had no idea he was authorized to do this. Regardless, congrats to all of them, and may they have many happy years together. TMZ Frances Bean Cobain and Riley Hawk are married, and former R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe officiated their wedding.
The first study where scientists tested the absorbancy of period products using blood and not water was just published THIS WEEK!
May I scream for a moment and tell you that the first study where scientists tested the absorbancy of period products using blood and not water was just published THIS WEEK!!! Unsurprisingly, it shows that products aren’t as absorbant as the labels say. How absurd is it that it took this long to test products on what they are actually supposed to be used on.
"Titan" submersible investigation begins
I was going to post this as a follow-on in the original thread but I see that it’s closed. Pieces of the imploded submersible have been retrieved and have arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The investigation will be a joint US-Canada effort. The article below has a few pictures and videos. The front titanium end cap appears to be intact, but from the way it’s being hoisted the circular window is gone. The other end cap is said to be intact as well.
