Welcome relief, and firm warning
In a short address to the nation on Tuesday afternoon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered both reassurance and a warning. By extending the earlier April-June PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana — which gave about 80 crore Indians cereals and lentils for free — till November, livelihoods battered by the Covid-19-instigated lockdown will have a cushion. This was necessary, without delay, for vulnerable as ‘food for work’ needed to be supplemented in its current state.

We Mustn’t Allow India to Dry Up
Chennai has virtually run dry, while many other parts of urban and rural India find themselves reeling under a water crisis. Water woes are neither new nor limited to the Tamil Nadu capital. Studies project that by next year, some 20-odd cities will run out of groundwater. Climate change, aggressive land-use change, improper urban planning and construction have contributed to the water emergency in the country.
No 1 in air pollution no badge of honour
India has among the world’s highest levels of air pollution. More than 75% of cities and towns monitored for air pollution fail to meet the national standards for air quality. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) portrays itself as a ‘party with a difference’. It claims to be anti-dynasty and having disciplined party workers and running honest governments at the centre and in the states. Now the BJP can make one more claim – its poster boy Narendra Modi is a ‘Prime Minister with a difference’.

Grand spending & tax concessions apart, GoI’s receipts based on hope & prayer
By Abheek Barua Chief Economist, HDFC Bank The interim finance minister’s budget was hardly ‘interim’. Instead, the string of changes in tax-and-spend seemed like GoI’s fiscal road map for 2019-20 as a whole — and with a somewhat obvious clear focus on the impending general elections.
Sack warring cops, restore CBI integrity
The CBI cannot continue to function with its top two officials engaged in open war against each other, levelling charges and ordering inquiries. The two should be removed from India’s premier investigation agency and fresh faces brought in. At the same time, the charges each of the two senior officers has raised should be investigated thoroughly. Going by the mud that has been flying in both directions, it is not just the CBI whose personnel are involved in shady deals.
What the government must do to rethink urban redevelopment in Delhi
The Central Government’s recent sanction to turn Delhi‘s greenest residential and heritage areas into high-rise commercial complexes under the garb of doubling government residential housing is not acceptable to the citizens of this city. Since June 2018, thousands of citizens have been engaged in emergency public measures to protect the trees that are being marked for felling to make way for these “redevelopment” projects.
Parliament regains some confidence: Democracy stands enriched by the debate
The no-confidence vote met its expected fate, being defeated by a resounding majority. What was of interest in the motion of no confidence were two things: which parties voted on which lines and who said what in the House. The Shiv Sena, a member of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, stayed away from the House, sparing itself the need to vote in favour of a government it has been criticising all along.
