Letter: Collaboration in North Dakota is setting the pace for the future of agriculture
North Dakota has always been a proving ground for agricultural innovation. That is why John Deere has a deep presence here with more than 500 employees across the state, advanced manufacturing in Valley City, technology development in Fargo, and partnerships that stretch from university classrooms to farm fields. Our people, customers and dealer network are woven into the fabric of North Dakota communities, working alongside the growers we serve.
DTN Cotton Open: Market Recovers Higher
Cotton modules lined up in a gin yard. ©Debra L Ferguson After taking a momentary “bearish breather” Thursday, the cotton market has regrouped and seems ready to resume its upward trend. The market initially was spooked lower by overbought conditions and a faltering Dow Jones. As of now, the cotton seems to have all of those distractions in perspective. Friday morning the Labor Department issued its jobs data for December and the numbers fell short of expectations.
DTN Livestock Close: Throughout Lags Behind for Both Cattle, Hogs
Heading into Friday’s trade, the livestock complex hopes to round out the week strong and find more clarity on whether or not processing speeds are going to get back to normal. GENERAL COMMENTS: Technically speaking, Thursday’s trade treated the livestock complex well as futures closed mostly higher. But from a fundamental sense, the slower slaughter speeds are troubling. Hog prices closed higher on the National Direct Morning Hog Report, up $0.78 with a weighted average of $68.60 on 11,662 head.
DTN Cotton Close: Market Corrects Lower
Photo: Alabama Cooperative Extension The cotton market sustained triple-digit losses Thursday amid poor export sales, a weaker Dow Jones and a slightly overbought situation. Volume was moderate. From its omicron low of 102.50 cents, spot March has raced some 17.00 cents higher, with very few corrections along the way. Some traders have expressed that a retreat of some measure would actually be healthy to the overall trend. This week alone the market has swelled some 2% in value.
DTN Grain Close: Wheat Extends Its Bearish Start in 2022
©Debra L Ferguson Stock Photography March contracts of all three U.S. wheats closed sharply lower again Thursday, sending Chicago and KC contracts to new two-month lows. Corn hung on to the only positive gain in Thursday’s grain trade, continuing to find support from concerns about dry weather in South America. GENERAL COMMENTS: March corn closed up 1 1/2 cents and July corn was up 2 cents. March soybeans closed down 7 1/2 cents and July soybeans were down 6 1/4 cents.
DTN Livestock Midday: Contracts Turn Highers
Photo: Texas AgriLife Extension It’s been a positive day for the livestock complex as the market is summoning support from both technical and fundamental influences. GENERAL COMMENTS: With the lousy beef export report, I was concerned the complex may trade lower, but thankfully the entire livestock complex is trading higher into Thursday afternoon. Heading into the latter part of the day the market will be looking to see where the day’s slaughter ends up, as well as pork cutout values.
DTN Cotton Open: Lower on Fed, Exports
Cotton modules lined up in a gin yard. ©Debra L Ferguson The cotton market is lower Thursday as it is embracing poor weekly export sales, a hawkish Federal Reserve, and an overbought technical condition. Thursday’s exports-sales were below those of last week, but China remained the front-row buyer. A summary of that business is as follows: Net sales of 143,200 RB for 2021/2022 were down 26 percent from the previous week and 48 percent from the prior 4-week average.

DTN Fertilizer Trends: Anhydrous, 10-34-0 Led Prices Up
Retail fertilizer prices continue to rise but at smaller percentages, according to prices for the last week of December 2021. Only two fertilizers were up a considerable amount. DTN designates a substantial move as anything 5% or more. Leading the way higher was anhydrous, up 9% from a month prior. The nitrogen fertilizer’s average price was $1,428/ton, which continues to be the all-time high in the DTN data set. 10-34-0 was 5% more expensive compared to last month.
Ag Trade: Specialty Soya and Grains Alliance Introduces U.S. Identity Preserved - DTN
©Debra L Ferguson Stock Photography Identity Preservation (IP) is the process of differentiating commodities, requiring that strict separation — typically involving containerized shipping — be maintained at all times. Identity preserved is often used to market commodities like food-grade corn and soybeans. But there are IP contracts for conventional, organic and biotech seeds also. The vast majority of IP crops are grown conventionally, USDA notes.
This is where driverless vehicles can really scale (and it will surprise you)
By Jahmy Hindman 4 minute Read Fully autonomous vehicles may not hit the roads until 2030 at the earliest, according to a McKinsey report. But when it comes to vehicles on the farm, that same timeline is nowhere near soon enough. Farmers need autonomy now, and they need it at scale. The need for autonomy on the farm isn’t for the sake of technological advancement alone. The need is born of the pressures farmers face today in their operations.
DTN Cotton Closing: Cotton Modulates Unchanged

Additionally, the market is waiting on Wednesday weekly export-sales. USDA will issue its report one day early as the U.S. government will be closed Thursday and Friday in observance of Christmas. The last two week’s sales have averaged 400,000 bales, with China as top buyer.

Grain prices were also unfazed by higher trading in the U.S. Dollar Index, rebounding from its lowest prices in over 2 1/2 years.

DTN Cotton Open: 2-Sided Overnight Trade
Line of modules during cotton harvest. ©Debra L Ferguson The cotton market is trading both sides of unchanged as it shakes off the cobwebs of Monday’s steep decline. The market entered Monday in a very overbought condition, and when news emerged that a new COVID variant was emerging in the UK, the market broke. However, it now seems that experts are questioning whether this new strand is as contagious or as lethal as others have quickly concluded.
Too many farmers can’t get broadband. That’s a crisis for us all
By Jahmy Hindman4 minute Read Despite all the challenges that farmers face today, I remain extremely optimistic about the future of agriculture. It will take more than the incredibly hard work of farmers, however, to continue to generate the food that our country and the rest of the world rely on. It will also require meeting the need for expanded access to rural broadband, which farmers need now more than ever. Farmers manage a multitude of issues in any given year.
