The 50 Best Texas Rap Songs
We’ve had decades of great Texas rap music, from Port Arthur to Dallas to Austin, that has made us forget that, for some reason, Vanilla Ice is the highest-selling rapper from the state. Thanks to tracks like “One Day” by UGK or “Sittin Sidewayz” by Paul Wall, that embarrassing fact doesn’t have to matter. Remember, “Damn It Feels Good to Be a Gangsta” by the Geto Boys came from the Lone Star State, as did the recent hit “Mamacita” by Travis Scott featuring Rich Gang.
The Dakota Pipeline Builder Will Continue With His Music Fest Named After Native Americans in 2017
In recent years, Kelcy Warren, the billionaire CEO of Energy Transfer Partner, has been best known for building fun things. In 2007 it was folk label Music Road Records; four years later, it was a music festival on his property in Cherokee, Texas; and in 2012 it was the popular downtown Dallas gathering spot Klyde Warren Park. But this year what Warren's building with Energy Transfer, the Dakota Access Pipeline, is much more controversial — and it's casting a shadow on his other pursuits.
The Denton-Based Band Pageantry Says "The Local Band Concept is Kind of Outdated"
Four years ago a trio of musicians came together in the sleepy college town of Denton by happenstance, and decided they wanted to work together. The trio of singer Roy Robertson, bassist Pablo Burrell, and drummer Ramon Muzquiz didn't see a future in the usual trajectory of a local band — formation, local media buzz, disappointment and eventual disappearance. Pageantry they managed to land official showcases at South By Southwest and CMJ Music Marathon.
Dallas' Love for Selena Knew No Bounds at Country Burger on Saturday
I saw the greatest piece of post-modern, Tumblr-era art on Saturday. It was a plaque-like piece of art featuring a photo Selena's killer Yolanda Saldívar with the phrase "Certified Hater." Naturally, it was written in the type of iconic typography you see adorning the back of custom low riders in Latino neighborhoods throughout Texas. It had a list price of $50; I had to be talked out of purchasing it. This, friends, is how we celebrate Selena in Dallas.
Pitbull at American Airlines Center, 7/22/16
It takes a lot to make Pitbull stop smiling. The Miami superstar's sole goal in life seems to live the best life on this planet, and he almost never stops smirking. But on Friday night at American Airlines Center even Pitbull's immaculately fun-loving facade cracked a little. "It fucks with me when someone talks about immigrants," Pitbull declared, on one of the several occasions in which he stopped everything to chide newly confirmed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Leon Bridges Went Busking in Deep Ellum Wednesday Night
Say this much for Leon Bridges: Fame doesn't appear to have changed him one bit. Despite all the fanfare he's received this year with the release of his debut album, Coming Home, on Columbia Records, including a series of network TV appearances, the Fort Worth native remains a man of the people. As Wednesday night turned to the early hours of Thursday morning, he took to the streets of Deep Ellum for a surprise busking session on Elm St. Bridges was a person man that night.
What the Hell is a Ragonk-a-Thon, and Why Are We So Excited for It?
If you look up the word "Ragonk" in the dictionary, well, you won't get very far. That's because Ragonk isn't actually a word. In truth, it's more of a meme. So what the hell is up with Trees hosting a concert this weekend (and one with a pretty damn good local lineup) called "Ragonk-a-Thon?" Well, it's a joke. Kind of. And it all stems back to one fateful miscue by local sports newscaster T.C. Flemming from Sportsradio 1310 FM The Ticket. Local music, you see, is a flat circle.
How To Book A Music Festival
Over the past few weeks, your hip friends have been excitedly clogging up your social-media feed with chatter about the bands that will be playing over three days in some remote location you've never even heard of. Meanwhile, the first weekend of Coachella 2015 has ended, and the second weekend is still to come. So here we are again: music-festival season. Music is like politics—everyone has an opinion, and none of them is right. Taste is obviously subjective, if not outright fraught.
Selena's Legacy is Still Going Strong in Dallas, 20 Years After Her Death
You don't even have to wait that long! While not all the karaoke shows I've tried around town have much music in Spanish (if they have Selena at all, it tends to be her English hits only), I have found the Totally Twisted shows to be the exception. They have almost two dozen Selena songs -- including duet numbers -- in their songbook, and they have a show tonight right in Bishop Arts at 303 Bar & Grill on Davis.
Garth Brooks is Toying with Dallas
Finally: Garth Brooks is coming back to Dallas. After more than seven years and a snub of the entire state of Texas on his comeback tour, yesterday he -- hey, wait a minute. This isn't actually a concert he's playing? He's just hosting a pre-party for the American Country Music Awards? Oh hell no. Tools You'll Need to Survive an Earthquake, Dallas Style
What's causing the Dallas earthquakes? (Most likely fracking.) Is it the long-dormant Balcones fault suddenly coming alive? (No.) Is it fracking? (Yes.) Is it the devil, here to claim Jerry Jones' soul? (Maybe.) Perhaps the land is just trying to tell us we don't need another goddamn music venue/plaza combination. Really, we don't know what's causing them. (Yes we do, it's fracking.) But we do know that Dallasites are freaking out with each new tremor, even though they've been pretty wimpy.
Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line Danced on the Grave of Country at Gexa on Saturday
Ebola causes you to leak fluids from your body's orifices and bleed internally until your body starts to slowly shut down. Then you die from a combination of low blood-pressure and organ failure. If you have the misfortune of being an American who catches this vile disease, the media will ruthlessly invade your privacy and reveal every minute detail of your life to the public. This is a horrid fate for anyone unfortunate enough to catch this terrible malady.

50 Signs You've Been Partying Too Long in Denton
By H. Drew Blackburn, Jaime-Paul Falcon and James Rambin There ain't much to do in Denton, Texas except party. We're talking about the quintessential college town, a place where the highest percentage of residents are between the ages of 20 and 29. A place where if you didn't end up there because of college, there's a good chance you were born and bred there. We're talking about a place where seven bars are within a literal stone's throw from the major university.
