“Bring your own” reusables to surgery: an environmental sustainability quality-improvement initiative
Operating rooms (ORs) produce more than 30% of a hospital’s total waste, equating to 2300 kg of waste per OR per year.1,2 The waste generated by a single surgery may be more than the waste produced by a family of 4 in a week.3 Around 80% of OR waste is produced perioperatively, with plastic waste contributing to 20% to 25% of total OR waste.2 Some sources of perioperative plastic waste include instrument packaging, disposable supplies, and personal protective equipment.

The program, to be carried out in nearby Oakland, is meant to test a scheme called Universal Basic Income, or UBI.

The staggering loss of life made it the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history , surpassing the 2016 shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, in which Omar Mateen killed 49 people.

Why Eliminating Cash Makes Sense For The Global Economy
By the time the $20 bill honors Harriet Tubman, cash may be something of a rarity. The Treasury Department’s recent announcement that Tubman and other women will grace $20, $10, and $5 bills starting in 2020, is a long overdue tribute to some of the country’s greatest civil heroes and suffrage activists. But the move raises a familiar question: Should we have paper currency at all?

Uses and Trends: People find it normal to post about there whole life on social media, making it very easy for people to prejudge them. Creating friendships between people at a young age is hard enough now adding social media into the mix it is even harder. I remember when my friend was looking for a college roommate she was looking on a Facebook and said, "this girl looks boring i'm not going to choose her" solely based on her profile.
Why the Economy Might Never Get Better
These confounding circumstances have led many economists to rally behind the concept of so-called “secular stagnation.” As a diagnosis, secular stagnation is simple: It’s the idea that the economic problems the U.S. continues to face aren’t a product of the “business cycle,” the ebb and flow of boom times and recession (hence the “secular” part), but may well be permanent drags on the modern economy.
This Theory Explains Why the U.S. Economy Might Never Get Better
In the wake of the 2008 financial crisis, conventional wisdom among economists, business leaders, and policy makers was fairly straightforward: Once the banks were bailed out, the stimulus spent, and businesses had a few years to recover, the U.S. economy would return to its usual healthy growth. Time, in other words, would heal the wounds of the subprime collapse and subsequent turbulence. But if any recovery has turned conventional wisdom on its head, it’s this one.
Here's How Much Uber and Lyft Drivers Make Per Trip
Uber drivers in the U.S. collected an average $13.36 per trip, while Lyft drivers took in an average of $12.53 for each ride, according to a new report. The data comes from SherpaShare, a smartphone app that helps rideshare drivers track their mileage and tax deductions, and is based on over 10,000 drivers taking more than 1 million trips from January to May of 2015. The cost per trip is calculated before Uber and Lyft take their cut, which is typically around 20%.
Why Germans Have to Pay to Lend Money
Imagine a world where you have to pay to loan the government money. Sound strange? It’s already the reality in Germany, where yields on government bonds, including those maturing as far away as eight years from now, have fallen into negative territory. The 10-year Bund, the German equivalent of a U.S. Treasury and a benchmark for long-term interest rates in Europe, is just a hair away from zero.
How Much Do Uber Drivers Make? Uber Reveals Driver Wages
Uber has long said its drivers get paid more than traditional cabbies. But do they really? Driver surveys, strikes, and class action lawsuits suggest otherwise. Most recently, BuzzFeed estimated that drivers in Denver, Detroit and Houston make less than $13.25 an hour after expenses, using calculations based on more than a million trips.
Columbia University has become conservative
As rumors began to spread of Orgo Night’s cancellation, one member of the Columbia University Marching Band posted the following excerpt of a recent Chris Rock interview with New York Magazine on Facebook: Chris Rock: I stopped playing colleges, and the reason is because they’re way too conservative. Chris Rock: Not in their political views — not like they’re voting Republican — but in their social views and their willingness not to offend anybody.
Sitting At Your Desk Is Killing You. Here's What It Costs To Stop the Destruction
The science is in: Sitting at your desk all day is really, really, bad for you. Studies have shown long periods of sitting is bad for the elderly, drastically increases your risk of cancer, and now new research confirms that being a couch potato at work is hazardous to your heart’s health. Worst of all, your daily (or weekly) trip to the gym isn’t enough to offset the damage that prolonged sitting can cause.
