Jake Luginbuhl’s Biography

Based in Virginia, Jake Luginbuhl is a history teacher specializing in American History, with a concentration in Constitutional Rights and Political Science. He has been in academia for 12 years and has taught more than 130 students each year for 9 of those years. His work reflects a steady commitment to helping students understand the structure of government, the meaning of civic responsibility, and the importance of informed participation in society.

His professional skills include behavior modeling, group instruction, leadership development, faculty collaboration, and peer evaluation. He focuses on guiding students through clear expectations and consistent support. He is recognized for encouraging students to understand their rights and responsibilities better while building their confidence in their academic abilities. His approach to teaching centers on steady instruction, practical engagement, and maintaining a respectful classroom culture.

Luginbuhl currently serves as a Social Studies teacher at the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice in Bon Air. Shortly after accepting this position, he introduced classroom management strategies to reduce disruptions and promote a structured learning environment. His efforts have focused on creating a setting where students feel supported while remaining accountable for their progress.

His lesson planning is tailored to meet a wide range of academic needs. He designs instruction that allows students at different levels to engage with the material in meaningful ways. By adjusting pacing, assignments, and discussion methods, he ensures that each student has the opportunity to understand and apply the content.

He began his teaching career as a K-12 substitute teacher with Hanover County Public Schools in Virginia. For more than three years, he followed classroom plans to continue instruction without interruption and reinforce core subject matter. He managed day-to-day classroom discipline, supported learning goals, and addressed challenges as they occurred. His role required flexibility, as he traveled daily to more than 10 schools throughout the county on an as-needed basis.

He later accepted the role of New Teacher Co-Coordinator for the district. In this capacity, he developed and delivered orientation programs for new teachers, introducing them to school systems, workplace culture, and professional expectations. He organized monthly meetings and presentations for first-year teachers and provided mentorship both in and out of the classroom. His work in this role emphasized collaboration, guidance, and practical support during the early stages of a teaching career.

His Accomplishments as a Social Studies Teacher with the County
He went on to teach Social Studies for 9 years with Hanover County Public Schools. During this time, Jake built a classroom environment grounded in open communication, mutual respect, and student collaboration. He planned activities that encouraged learners to observe, question, and investigate historical and civic topics. His goal was to help students think critically about social studies while developing their ability to analyze information.

He also worked to differentiate instruction to reach students at varying academic levels. By adapting assignments and discussions, he aimed to support both struggling learners and those ready for advanced challenges. His steady approach helped guide students toward measurable academic growth and personal development.

Beyond classroom instruction, he accepted several leadership responsibilities. He served as a class sponsor, assistant wrestling coach for two years, BETA club co-sponsor, DECA club advisor and judge, robotics team coach, and emcee. As a BETA club co-sponsor, he assisted in organizing activities that promoted academic achievement and character development. As a DECA advisor, he prepared students for professional development and competitive events, and as a judge, he evaluated their presentations and performance. Through these roles, he supported student involvement beyond standard coursework.

Luginbuhl was recognized as Atlee High School Teacher of the Month in November 2016 and May 2019. He is also a co-founder of the Atlee High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes Chapter. His contributions to these programs reflected his interest in supporting students academically, socially, and ethically.

In addition to his work in schools, he has sought opportunities to give back. From 2021-2025, he sponsored a girl in Thailand for four years through ChildFund International. Since 1938, the organization has supported children facing poverty, crisis, and vulnerability in dozens of countries. His sponsorship represented a personal commitment to improving opportunities for children beyond his own community.

In October 2025, he organized and led a disc golf fundraiser for Grace and Peace Community Ministries, a Richmond-based nonprofit. The organization serves inner-city families and individuals by providing essential resources such as food, diapers, and formula, as well as educational assistance, including GED programs and, in some cases, children’s camps. Services are offered regardless of religious background. The fundraiser used disc golf, a sport in which participants complete a course of 9 or 18 holes by throwing specialized discs into an elevated metal basket in as few attempts as possible.

He has also volunteered with the Broadus Baptist Church Living Nativity, a community event featuring nine staged scenes, more than 70 volunteer actors, and live animals. The event provides a guided outdoor experience designed to bring community members together.

Jake earned his Bachelor of Arts in History from Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. He later completed his Postbaccalaureate Teacher Licensure in Education at the University of Richmond in Virginia. His academic preparation provided the foundation for his work in history and social studies instruction.

He also attended the Bob and Marion Teacher Institute in Williamsburg, a professional development program that has trained over 34,500 educators. The program emphasizes site-based learning and engagement with primary sources to strengthen the teaching of American history. Through this experience, he expanded his ability to present historical events with depth and clarity, using practical strategies that can be applied directly in the classroom.

Jake Luginbuhl is the youngest of three children and is known for his outgoing and extroverted personality. He enjoys sports and superheroes. In his free time, he plays dodgeball, pickleball, disc golf, and ultimate frisbee. He also values spending time outdoors and hosting movie nights.
