Homophobia still haunts modern blood donation
UMass should take a stand Unfortunately, the frequency of local blood drives has become a necessity of modern medicine. Blood donations are critical to ensure that patients in dire need of a transfusion are able to obtain one—but often we do not truly notice the underlying homophobia at work in American blood drives. Per order of the Federal Drug Administration, there exists a stipulation to exclude cis-gender gay men and transgender gay men from donating their blood in service of others.
Mental health is a low priority at UMass
For many undergraduate students, the experience of attending college can put a strain on an individual’s mental well-being. The climate that college-aged young adults exist in requires intense focus, dedication and often excessively hectic schedules.
The ‘Grab and Go’ system needs adjustment
As students of the University of Massachusetts, we are very fortunate to have access to high quality, award-winning food in each of our four dining halls. UMass has maintained the title of number one dining out of all universities across the United States for a third year in a row, according to the Princeton Review. However, some aspects of the “Grab and Go” system must be altered in order to better reflect the necessities of students who are looking to eat quickly.
As UMass costs rise, students suffer
It is no secret that the sheer cost of attending college as an undergraduate student has skyrocketed across the United States in recent decades, even when accounting for inflation. The financial struggle many students and families are faced with in order to pay for higher education appears to worsen with each calendar year, ultimately placing young adults into precarious situations in regard to their futures.
The power of degrees outside of Isenberg
It seems to be a well-known fact that the students at the University of Massachusetts are lucky to have such a renowned business school, the Isenberg School of Management. Year after year, the college is widely praised for its innovation and exceptional motivation for improving business education. But sometimes I wonder if some of the other colleges here at UMass receive less praise than they should.

The downfalls of transferring
The transition from high school to college is different for every student, and sometimes this change can prove very difficult for some. The vast possibilities available on a college campus can be overwhelming for a freshman, especially when the tasks of making new friends and choosing an academic path come into play. Often, leaving behind the ease and comfort of a high school environment causes immense stress for young adults who may feel thrown off balance.

Risk-taking is an undisputed part of life; whether on small or large scales, we must all move outside of our comfort zones from time to time. Unfortunately, many people have come to associate traveling abroad with insurmountable risk, often electing to stay home for fear of falling victim to calamity. With a heightened sense of unrest both at home and abroad, it isn’t difficult to see why people often feel that it is safer to avoid traveling altogether.
The Massachusetts Daily Collegian
As a whole, human beings generally possess a need to incessantly categorize and classify the people and things that surround them in daily life. Social constructs occupy a major role in defining what we as citizens of the world feel we must be doing with our time and what our neighbors should be doing as well. More often than not, it is easy for us to become disoriented when we cannot organize reality into neat little boxes, an attribute that depicts a human need for order and stability.

Detriments of living in a college bubble
For many students, college exists as a place to escape reality; an environment in which avoiding pressures associated with the outside world can be avoided. There’s fresh, hot food available at multiple dining halls, without any personal preparation necessary. The bathrooms are perfectly cleaned, without any manual labor from the students who use them. There are fewer authority figures, which gives freer rein to many young adults who have just recently left home in the past couple of years.
Studying a foreign language is vital
Throughout my adolescence, the school system I was educated in placed a heavy emphasis on studying foreign language from a young age. Looking back, I think the push for parents to involve their children in these programs was partially a push for these same families to accept that English might not necessarily be the predominant language of the future here in the United States.
The objectification of women in Greek life
Across the United States and on our campus here at the University of Massachusetts, women are consistently treated as objects in fraternities. While the culture of Greek life at American universities is deeply rooted in tradition, one must ponder the effects of a potentially degrading system for young women growing up in this kind of social climate. A classic example of this behavior at fraternity parties can be seen before you even walk in the door.
