How to make sure apprentices finish before Gateway closes
Many apprentices are missing their end-point assessments because they have not done their 20 per cent off-the-job training. The solution is to spend time at the planning stage, says Jake Tween We are reaching a pivotal moment with the new standards. The first large cohorts of apprentices are coming to the end of their programmes and approaching Gateway, a critical milestone in their journey.
How to create a pro-apprenticeship company culture
When looking at business efficiencies and addressing critical skills gaps, the significance of company culture is often overlooked. But when it comes to realising the potential of new apprenticeship standards, culture is critical. Contributor Jake Tween is Head of Apprenticeships – ILM. Apprenticeships will only be in a position to achieve core business goals if people across the whole of an organisation recognise their value.
How apprenticeships can help plug the management skills gap
Apprenticeships will help to plug the skills deficit – but only if misconceptions are overcome, argues Jake Tween. According to the most recent ONS flash estimate, UK productivity is on the rise. But with Brexit on the horizon, British businesses need to make sure they have strong leadership in place to help them navigate the uncertainty ahead. Worryingly, the UK is in fact facing a serious shortfall of skilled leaders.
We need to challenge the misconceptions about apprenticeships
It’s been a rollercoaster ride for apprenticeships of late, but we see reassuring signs that the new standards are bedding in. With employers of all shapes and sizes starting to embrace them, in some cases for the first time, apprenticeships are closer than ever to the heart of the UK skills agenda.
Why the apprenticeship levy needs leniency - for now
Apprenticeships have been a vital part of tackling the UK’s skills shortage for many decades and provide a steady pipeline of talent entering the workforce. Thanks to recent reforms, they are also a topic of fierce debate. New research from the CIPD suggests that employers are failing to fully embrace the new levy, with one in five writing it off as a tax and more than half calling for it to be scrapped.
Give the apprenticeship levy a chance
We need to allow some time for the kinks to be straightened out and for employers to take advantage of the levy According to research published by the CIPD, only 20% of employers paying the apprenticeship levy support the new system, 53% want it to be scrapped and replaced with a broader training tariff, and 22% don’t know whether they’re paying for the levy or not. These findings paint a bleak picture of employers’ attitudes towards the levy, which is still less than a year old.
Five Years on: pushing through the Richard Review
When Doug Richard revealed the findings of his review, he said; ‘No matter who I speak to, everyone agrees that apprenticeships are a good thing’. Five years on, and we’re seeing even more people both inside and out of the sector developing an understanding of the value of apprenticeships, and their role in helping fill the UK’s critical skills gap and improve the UK’s productivity.
Overcoming the apprenticeships stigma - not before time
Despite being one of the most accessible and efficient ways to upskill talent, dismissive attitudes towards apprenticeships are still rife in the UK. Deeply ingrained associations with trade, low wages, and a perception that they put a glass ceiling on progression, mean that apprenticeships have long considered something not to aspire to.
Getting to grips with 20% off-the-job training - and why it makes sense
Jake Tween, Funding and Apprenticeships Manager at The Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), comments on the challenge presented by the 20% rule It’s hard to believe it’s been almost four months since the new apprenticeship standards launched, giving employers more power to shape training and development and help plug the burgeoning skills gap.
