Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I'm not that old!

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

The only one I can think of immediately is Tim Messenger from Hot Fuzz, though hopefully, I don't end up like him. Nasty way to go.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

WordPress, Google Docs, Twitter, Transfermarkt.com among many others

Why did you become a journalist?

I love sports, and I've always been a good writer. After a few years unsure what I wanted to do, I realised this was the obvious fit.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I wrote a few articles for my University paper, but didn't pursue journalism seriously until after graduating.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I did a piece on the cost of football for the Daily Mirror which did very well and took a lot of work, so I'd say that.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

As I was told during my training, just say yes to everything. All new experience is good experience and it's important to expand your range.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Whenever, if I don't use a pitch it's often because it's not what I'm covering more than it being a bad story.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

For my own sporting info and news, I use BBC sport usually.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Everyone thinks sports journalism is all live reporting from games. And while that side of it is brilliant, it's a small section.
