Career Readiness Needs an Architecture, Not an Add-On
In the first column in this series, I argued that career readiness cannot wait until graduation. In the second, “Career Readiness Should Be Developmental, Not Episodic,” I proposed that students should encounter progressively more challenging opportunities to connect learning and work—from seeing how knowledge operates in the world to exercising agency, tackling authentic problems and defending the choices they make. But student initiative is not enough.
Career Readiness Should Be Developmental, Not Episodic
This fall, two of my nephews began their first year at the University of Michigan. I spoke with them at length as they contemplated where to attend, and ultimately they chose Michigan—the same place where, many years ago, I began my own undergraduate journey. As they embark on their own learning journeys, I am struck by how different their experiences will be from mine. They will have more ways to explore their interests, encounter employers, build capabilities and connect learning with work.
Career Readiness Cannot Wait Until Graduation, and It Doesn’t Have To
Just after 1 a.m. Friday morning, I returned to Ann Arbor from the QS Back to School Summit in New York. For three days, university leaders, workforce development experts and investors had returned to a common concern and a shared imperative for the AI era: Higher education needs to do more throughout the undergraduate experience to prepare students for work—not only to secure a first job, but to enter a lifetime of learning and continuous adaptation.

Taylor Swift Has Apparently Invited the Knicks Starting Five to Her Wedding
Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, and Karl-Anthony Towns are heading back to Madison Square Garden. The New York Knicks starting lineup, who made history last month when they took home the NBA championship, have now been invited to another history-making event: Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding of the year.
Angelina Jolie Is Timeless in a Plunging Black Gown and Her Favorite Wardrobe Staple
No one does timeless sophistication like Angelina Jolie. The actor emerged in New York City last night for a rare red-carpet appearance to celebrate her film Couture, and for the occasion, pulled pieces from her minimalist wardrobe dominated by blacks, creams, and whites. Her ensemble was simple: a black gown and a white coat, with matching accessories. And yet, Jolie made it look like the pinnacle of elegance.
Madonna Performs a Surprise Times Square Concert in Custom Dolce & Gabbana
The Queen of Pop has found her latest iconic arena: Times Square. Last night, Madonna held a surprise concert in the middle of the Big Apple hotspot, in partnership with Grindr. Over the past few weeks, the Material Girl has teamed up with the gay dating app to sell an exclusive vinyl variant of her forthcoming album, Confessions II, and to offer up exclusive interviews and more.

What History, Evidence and Competing Views Tell Us About AI and Higher Education
Something significant is happening in higher education. Whether it represents a genuine inflection point or another chapter in a longer story of technology and learning is a question worth taking seriously—because how we answer it will shape the choices we make. Before we can think clearly about where we’re going, it helps to understand where we’ve been. “A new era of education was about to begin: one where any student who wanted an education could get one quickly and inexpensively.
Zendaya Shares a Video to “Clear the Confusion” on Those Fake Wedding Photos
In case you hadn’t heard, Zendaya and Tom Holland allegedly tied the knot in Italy, and they kept it a secret from the whole world until Law Roach cheekily spilled the news at the Actor Awards earlier this month. “The wedding already happened. You missed it,” he told a reporter on the red carpet that night.
Building Bridges, Not Just Programs
For decades, higher education’s relationship with workforce development has been characterized by a kind of polite distance. Universities offered degrees. Employers hired graduates. And the space between credential and career was left to the margins of institutional life: scattered across units, underresourced relative to its importance and rarely treated as central to the academic mission. That arrangement is ending.
What’s Going on Between Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth?
Over the weekend, Sex and the City’s Chris Noth took to Instagram to share a photo of himself at the gym, holding weights and grimacing at the camera. But the seemingly innocent image—captioned “F&@k new years - LETS GO!!!!”—quickly sparked a comment section full of questions about his allegedly rocky relationship with his former co-star Sarah Jessica Parker.
Why Speed Isn’t Higher Ed’s Real Innovation Problem
It has become something of a reflex to describe higher education as slow. In moments of rapid change, including the rise of generative artificial intelligence, shifting workforce demands and new credential models, the critique resurfaces with renewed force. Universities, the story goes, simply can’t keep up. They move too deliberately, govern too carefully and respond too cautiously to a world that increasingly rewards speed.
Taylor Swift Bundles Up in a Louis Vuitton Duffle Coat for Dinner With Este Haim
There’s nothing like a little callback to your younger self. While in New York City to promote her forthcoming documentary series, The End of an Era, Taylor Swift stepped back in time to revisit one of her signature styles from the early 2010s. Borrowing its name from a town in Belgium, where the thick woolen fabric was first manufactured, duffle coats were popularized back in the 1850s—though for Swifties, they were made famous in 2012 with the artist’s cozy red coat look.
Why Universities Need a Strategic Marketing Shift
This past week, presenting at the UPCEA MEMS conference in Boston, we explored a question that is becoming central to the future of higher education: What does it actually take to engage learners in lifelong learning with an institution? In a moment of rising enrollment volatility, shifting global dynamics and accelerating technological change, this question cuts to the heart of what universities must become.
Lessons From a Conversation About AI, Future of Higher Ed
Now The small Florida public college overhauled by the state’s governor has added athletic teams and a new mascot, along with a change in its philosophy. Nearly three years ago, as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis championed his culture war policies during the run-up to a bid for the White House, he vowed to …
Lessons From a Conversation About AI, Future of Higher Ed
Last week in the historic Michigan Union Ballroom, I opened a conversation with a line from The Sun Also Rises that has been echoing in my mind. Nearly a century ago, Hemingway captured a moment when a character is asked how he went bankrupt. His reply: “Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly.” For years, AI made its way into our institutions through incremental experiments—a pilot here, a classroom tool there.
Can We Build Shared Value Through University-Industry Partnerships?
Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting Lisa Gevelber, founder of Grow with Google, at the University of Michigan’s Center for Academic Innovation. Lisa and I spent the day in conversation with students, faculty, staff and career development leaders, exploring what it means to prepare learners for the future of work in the age of AI and what it means to do so together.
Can Higher Education Lead in Workforce Transformation?
The future of work is no longer on the horizon; it is here, reshaping how enterprises operate and how individuals navigate their careers. At this year’s Coursera Connect conference, one message came through clearly: Workforce demands are evolving faster than traditional programming models can adapt. Technology, particularly AI, is accelerating the pace of change, but it is only one force among many transforming the skills landscape.
Charlize Theron at 50: The Hollywood star who escaped tragedy to break down prejudices
Placing the origins of Hollywood’s biggest stars in the most precarious starting point possible is a cliché as old as the Mecca of cinema itself. Sylvester Stallone being forced to sell his dog to buy some food, Jennifer Lopez sleeping in the dance school she attended, and Hilary Swank and Jim Carrey converting their cars into makeshift homes are some of the most memorable cases.
The hype wears Prada: Sequel goes viral before its release thanks to nostalgia
“It’s like seeing the goddesses return to Mount Olympus.” With this metaphor, a Mexican Twitter user remarked on photographs of Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt taken during the filming of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in New York. The three actresses reprise the roles of Andy Sachs, Miranda Priestly and Emily Charlton, respectively. Social media has been flooded with hundreds of messages yearning for the release of the sequel to a movie that became a phenomenon exactly two decades ago.

La decadencia y fascinación de ‘And Just Like That’: “Aunque sea un bodrio, la seguiré viendo”
George Clooney: The last great Hollywood heartthrob who only made one mistake in his career
To assess the true power of George Clooney, 64, one need only mention the fact that a guest essay he wrote in The New York Times ultimately led to Joe Biden’s withdrawal as a candidate for the presidency of the United States. His influence goes beyond the box office, which he has conquered with hits such as The Perfect Storm (2000) and the Ocean’s Eleven saga (2001-2007).

The spectacular life of Mikhail Baryshnikov: Fleeing the USSR, Hollywood romances, and that role in ‘Sex and the City’
When the third season of And Just Like That premieres later this month, we’ll find out whether Carrie Bradshaw continues her relationship with Aidan — the boyfriend who rivaled the eternal Mr. Big for her heart. Aidan was one of the main draws of the most recent episodes in the Sex and the City sequel, but Carrie’s romantic history includes many names, most of them fleeting. One however has left lasting imprint: Aleksandr Petrovsky, also known as “The Russian,” who persuaded her to move to Paris.

Moving toward sustainable academic innovation

For too long, systemic inequities have hindered students from reaching their academic potential—particularly those students who are the first in their family to go to college, students who are balancing work and care responsibilities, and students who face financial challenges. Tackling these challenges requires more than incremental change.
