Russia emerges strengthened from Ukraine war, with profound implications for western imperialism
“Europe is going to pay in a BIG way, as they should, and it will be your win”, NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte boasted to Donald Trump. Indeed, the NATO alliance of western imperialist powers agreed to up their ‘defence’ spending to five percent of GDP over the next decade, at their recent summit in The Hague. The European arms industry bosses were no doubt delighted.
Global debt: a ticking time bomb
For decades, the world economy has been kept afloat by the life support of credit. For a time, it appeared as if there was no limit to what governments could borrow in order to stabilise the system. Problems were simply kicked down the road, as if there were no tomorrow. In this way, they have fed a monster, which now threatens to devour its master.
‘Beat the Whites With the Red Wedge’: the essence of world revolution
El Lissitzky’s iconic Civil War poster ‘Beat the Whites With the Red Wedge’ is perhaps the single most recognisable piece of artwork to emerge from the entire Russian Revolution. Its influence is widespread even today. In this article, Nelson Wan and James Kilby explore how The Red Wedge came into being, how it captures the essence of revolution, and how a work of propaganda such as this can be considered great art.
The Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression: Lessons for today
Capitalism is entering into what looks set to be its deepest crisis ever. Although COVID-19 provided the trigger, a deep slump has been in the making for many years. With the stock market in turmoil, mass unemployment, and the perspective of a global depression, parallels are being drawn to the Great Depression of the 1930s – although even that may fall short as a parallel. In October 1929, the Wall Street Crash brought a dramatic end to the so-called “roaring twenties”.
Netanyahu resumes genocide to cling to power
Throughout Tuesday 18 March, the Israeli Defence Force (IDF) launched barrages of bombs upon the people of Gaza, shattering the fragile ceasefire with a rain of death and destruction. Over 400 Palestinians were killed and more than 600 injured in the strikes, making it the single bloodiest day of Israel’s genocide since late 2023. In typical fashion, Israel justified its latest bombardment by accusing Hamas of breaking the ceasefire agreement. But the facts reveal otherwise.
Britain: Labour in power - a history of managing capitalism in crisis
Keir Starmer’s Labour Party has been in power for over half a year now. This will go down in history as the most rapidly discredited government in Britain (excluding Liz Truss’ brief tenure). [Originally published at communist.red] Starmer and his cabinet have been clear from the outset that they’re at the service of big business. They’ve been very open about their readiness to take ‘tough decisions’, i.e. austerity, to try and put capitalism back on track.

ICC seeks the arrest of Netanyahu: we say - bring down all the imperialist criminals!
On Thursday 21 November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) finally issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, Israel’s prime minister and former defence minister respectively, for ‘war crimes’. This merely confirms what has been clear for over a year – that Netanyahu and his murderous regime are a gang of criminals with blood on their hands.
Britain: the ‘Zinoviev letter’ - how the establishment schemed to bring down Labour
100 years ago, British intelligence, the Tory Party, and the bosses’ press colluded to bring down the first Labour government. The ‘Zinoviev letter’ affair reveals the murky machinations of the capitalist state, which will go to any length to defend its interests. [Originally published at communist.red] ‘Fake news’, ‘Russian interference’, ‘deep state conspiracy’, ‘election scandal’.
The ‘Zinoviev letter’: How the establishment schemed to bring down Labour
‘Fake news’, ‘Russian interference’, ‘deep state conspiracy’, ‘election scandal’. This isn’t referring to 2024, but to an event which took place exactly a century ago, one that shook British politics: the so-called ‘Zionoviev letter’ affair. On 25 October 1924, just four days before a general election, the Daily Mail published its infamous ‘Zinoviev letter’. The letter – since revealed to be a forgery – was a devious ploy by the establishment to prevent the re-election of the Labour Party.
IDF killing of US citizen exposes Biden and Harris’ rank hypocrisy
On Friday 6 September, Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, a 26-year-old Turkish-American activist was killed in cold blood by a sniper of the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). Eygi was sheltering from IDF provocations at a prayer session near the village of Beita in the West Bank, when she was shot in the head and killed.
Starmer’s manifesto: A Tory programme in Labour colours
“We are the party of wealth creation,” declared Sir Keir Starmer, as he launched Labour’s manifesto last Thursday. ‘You’re speaking our language!’ cheered Britain’s bankers and bosses, who like to style themselves as ‘wealth creators’. No doubt they got the message: that the Labour Party under Starmer is now a safe pair of hands for British capitalism. Tory-lite After 14 years of crisis and decline, the Tories have never been more hated.
Britain’s crumbling infrastructure: The capitalists are running out of road
‘A stitch in time saves nine’, so the old saying goes. Now, after years of avoiding essential repairs and maintenance, the fabric of Britain’s infrastructure is beginning to unravel. Last year it was revealed how the lives of thousands of children are at risk from collapsing schools, due to the use of cheap crumbly concrete. But it turns out that tackling dodgy concrete and making schools safe is merely a pricey starter on a very costly bill when it comes to patching-up broken Britain.
Lenin and the importance of the workers’ press | Socialist Appeal
“Out of this spark will come a flame.” Such was the strapline of Lenin’s newspaper Iskra (‘Spark’), which he founded in 1900 with a small group of comrades. How true those words were! Only 17 years later, Lenin and the Bolsheviks led the working class of Russia to power in the world’s first successful socialist revolution. Lenin’s success was based primarily on his profound grasp of Marxist theory.
Autumn Statement offers no relief for workers: Prepare for class struggle
Tory Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s latest Autumn Statement is another case of giving to the rich with one hand, whilst taking from the poor with the other. Facing electoral disaster next year, the Tories are keen to position themselves as the ‘party of low taxes’. Hunt’s latest package therefore includes a cut of 2 percent to national insurance contributions, in an attempt to placate the Tory faithful.
Bankers call for wage cuts – We call for revolution! | Socialist Appeal
British workers and companies “need to accept that they’re worse off” as a result of inflation, according to Huw Pill, the Bank of England’s (BoE) chief economist. “Somehow, in the UK,” Pill lectured recently, “someone needs to accept that they’re worse off, and stop trying to maintain their real spending power by bidding up prices [or] wages”.
Flammable cladding scandal: Another capitalist crime
In June 2017, 72 people burned alive in the Grenfell Tower disaster. They were effectively killed for profit. Now, scandalously, over five-and-a-half years later, only 7% of dangerous homes have been made safe to live in. Hundreds of thousands of people’s lives continue to remain at risk, as those responsible for this crisis refuse to pay up. This is another shocking reminder of how, under capitalism, the interests of big business come before the lives of ordinary people.
Uyghurs in Xinjiang: national oppression and imperialist hypocrisy
Both the US and British governments have recently launched a barrage of criticism against China’s treatment of the Uyghurs. The US has gone as far as imposing sanctions on top Chinese state officials responsible for Xinjiang, and the oppression of the Uyghurs by the Chinese state is now regularly featured in the news in the West. According to reports by the capitalist press, hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs are being detained in prison camps, whilst others face extremely repressive conditions.
Navy’s newest boat christened in Connecticut
GROTON, Conn. — The U.S. Navy’s newest attack submarine, the future Oregon, was christened in Connecticut Saturday. Politicians, shipyard leaders and Navy officials gathered for a ceremony at the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, where they spoke about the importance of Virginia-class submarines and praised the skills of the thousands of shipyard workers in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Virginia who built the Oregon. Vice Adm.
[Video] Keynesianism and the Post War Boom
Details Marxist economics Theory: Marxist economics Audio & Video In this video from a 2016 Socialist Appeal day school on Marxist economics, James Kilby compares and contrasts the economic theories of Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes, and analyses the material conditions and historic factors that led to the "post-war boom" - the 25 year period of capitalism upswing that followed the end of the Second World War.
