Letter: A response to The Forum's editorial about teacher morale, resignations
Governor Doug Burgum and Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler Contributed photos We read your recent editorial, “ North Dakota should act now to address low teacher morale, resignations .” It suggested we form a task force to draft proposals to present to the 2023 Legislature. We are pleased to see increased interest in K-12 workforce challenges because, as your editorial noted, this is a critical issue.
Letter: Teaching history the right way
On March 6, 1857, the Supreme Court declared that Black people, free or enslaved, were not and never could be U.S. citizens. Jim Crow laws began in the 1860s as a response to the abolishment of slavery as a way to legally mandate segregation. Redlining became a popular practice in the 1930s as a way for the U.S. government to segregate housing stock by making housing programs exclusively beneficial to white people.
Letter: 'Bad Seeds' cartoon disrespectful and distasteful
We would like to respond to the “ Bad Seeds ” cartoon that appeared to refer to former Cass County child protection service leaders published in The Forum Feb. 12th. Personally, the cartoon was distasteful and disrespectful. We were both employed along with the individuals labeled as “bad seeds” for many years. All the individuals named have worked in the human services system for 25 plus years.
Letter: North Dakota’s journey
James Leiman is North Dakota's commerce commissioner. Contributed / North Dakota Department of Commerce<br/> This week Gov. Doug Burgum shared with us the many advancements our state has achieved and is anticipated to reach within the next decade. One of the main points addressed is that our state is truly a land of opportunity. North Dakota possesses an abundance of natural resources that are fundamental in meeting the world’s production needs in a volatile global environment.
Letter: Republicans are seeking state-sponsored censorship
Over the last decade, individuals that call themselves Republicans have labeled anyone on the political center or left as snowflakes whenever they point out anything that has to do with racism or sexism. The usual line from Republicans is to just work harder or have thicker skin. Yet, if you have read the news over the past few months, the real snowflakes today are in fact Republicans.
Letter: Donald Trump is a traitor and must never hold office again
Traitor: a person who betrays a friend, country, principle, etc. One who, in breach of trust, delivers his country to the enemy. I looked up the definition of the word "traitor" after hearing the former president say he would pardon the jailed insurrectionists of the January 6th incident if he were to hold the office of president a second time. God forbid! Over the years Donald Trump has said a lot of controversial things but for some reason this statement really took my breath away.
Collaborating as One For Community Prosperity and State Sustainability
For two days, leaders and citizen volunteers from across North Dakota and neighboring states were provided tours, data-driven education and access to national speakers that addressed how land use and tax policies can drain or benefit communities.
Find Fun All Around Autumn North Dakota
Fall in North Dakota is a lively season filled with activities and adventures across the state. As a father of two young children, this season is great for spending time with the family. From the many markets, festivals and fairs, to the pumpkin patches and Halloween activities, North Dakota does not let the quick season hamper the experience of fall. In almost every community, you will find a weekly market offering locally grown fresh produce and goods from local artisans.

Letter: America, find your inner philharmonic
Letters Written By: James Leiman | Oct 23rd 2020 - 7am. × We are living in fascinating times. Never in our lifetimes have we been so divided; this comes in the form of political fractures which rival those of previous civil conflicts; socioeconomic divisions which are now effectively on par with the rest of the Americas and somehow, we argue about wearing masks and have found a way to politicize a health crisis.
Letter: A salute to Gold Star Families this Memorial Day
It is said that being a Gold Star Family is an honor that no one wants. Created 102 years ago, this honor is bestowed upon loved ones of those who died in the line of military service. Since 9/11, there have been over 7,000 combat deaths and 16,000 non-combat deaths, e.g. service member suicides, resulting in tens of thousands of families who have sacrificed their loved ones for duty, honor and country.
Letter: The importance of teaching kids about money
According to Forbes, most Americans are financially illiterate. This is due to a number of scary statistics regarding debt, a lack of understanding of interest rates, high delinquency rates on loans as well as a few other measurements. Put simply, our society values material assets and our school system doesn’t teach us how to balance checkbooks, properly leverage debt or even help us understand interest.
Letter: An amazing taste of the Mediterranean, right here in Fargo
On Christmas Eve, my family and I tried GP’s Greek Kitchen in south Fargo. We were greeted by a U.S. Army veteran who works there and clearly loves his job (as well as the food he gets to taste) and the chef, a very kind man who has an amazing talent to transport his customers into the Old World with the food he makes. We ordered several dishes to include a lamb and beef plate, chicken skewers, salads and a Greek burger for my son.
Letter: I hope you all catch a match or two of the most beautiful game
Les Bleus, the affectionate name for the French nation team, was the underdog against a far superior Brazilian squad. The magician, Zinedine Zidane, led les Bleus to victory. For those two hours, the world was simply captivated. The restaurant was silent except for when someone scored or came close. To this day, that game still influences me.You see, soccer explains the world.
Letter: Reflect on the positives of a diverse community
My wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on Monday; both are doing great! Unfortunately, Sanford's options on Broadway were limited due to its closure so I decided to take an epicurean journey into Fargo's diverse food scene.I started with Darbar Palace as it was a few short blocks. The lunch buffet is amazing! I highly recommend the masala as the butter coupled with naan hits home.
Leiman: Never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom
Having just returned from an overseas deployment a few months prior, he quizzed me on what it was like to be mobilized. He had just learned that his Stryker unit was deploying to Iraq that year. He was excited and anxious as he was a soldier's soldier; however, he had an infant daughter that he didn't want to leave.I didn't know what to tell him because he was an infantry guy and I knew his experience would be much different than mine.
Letter: The Minnesota DFL is desparate
Look, the DFL and my opponent can't hide the fact they failed to pass a bonding bill, failed on diversion, failed on tax breaks and failed on healthcare for western Minnesotans. It is time to stop the support of special interests and put career politics behind us.
Letter: Western Minnesota at a crossroads
Western Minnesota is at a crossroads this election cycle. Elect a relative unknown with a proven track record of leadership and growth or continue with a family legacy lasting multiple generations in Minnesota politics. I wanted to provide you with a vision for global, domestic and regional competitiveness that I believe can enhance our quality of life for present and future generations.
Letter: Cut Minnesota legislative pay now
Like many western Minnesotans, I was floored by an interview with Sen. Kent Eken, DFL-Twin Valley, that appeared in the Detroit Lakes Tribune regarding his desire to increase Minnesota legislative salaries. After voting to increase pay in 2013, which failed, my opponent is the chief author of constitutional amendment to create a government commission with the sole purpose of raising legislative compensation.State legislators make $31,000 per year (for about 3 months of full time work in session).
Letter: After 1,000th door, sharing what I learned
Over the last few months, I have been fortunate to meet several thousand of my western Minnesotan neighbors and listen to their vision for our region. On Sunday, July 10th, I knocked on my one thousandth door and I figured I would share what I learned. There have been three commonly mentioned themes. One, the infighting between parties has created an animosity and gridlock that we all detest. Two, taxes are simply too high.
Letter: Stop the madness at state Capitol
Like many of you, I was disappointed and outraged to learn of Gov. Mark Dayton's pocket veto of $260 million in tax relief for farmers, veterans, working student loan-debtors.Bottom line, we need a strong and moderate voice to go to St. Paul and stop this madness. Our current elected officials, including my opponent who is running for a seventh term in the legislature, have failed once again to get things done for the people of our district.
