Graphical Abstract New RPNHP ligands bearing aryl groups with ortho methyls coordinate to Ru to produce pincer complexes with normal coordination moieties. However, upon dehydrohalogenation the amide intermediate rapidly activates an ortho methyl C−H bond, adding it across the Ru−N bond forming new tuck-in complexes. Significant differences in reactivity are observed when the aryl group contains one or two ortho methyl groups.
