How I made $542.47 from Medium Partners without writing a word.
This is an article about moving old articles into the Partner program. When Medium announced that they were doing a revenue share with their partner writers, I started moving some of my old posts behind their paywall. One of those posts, This Alternative To-do List Will Help You Complete 100 Tasks Everyday, actually did pretty well and generated $542.47 over the last seven days. What’s cool is that the work of writing that article is long past.
Can Startups Save Us?
Working for big business has finally lost whatever was left of its meaning Photo by Negative Space from Pexels For most of the past eight years, I have worked for large multinational corporations. ‘Big Business’ with the capital-Bs. You just know they’ve got a lobbying arm — or two — and are more than a little flimsy on the ethics of paying taxes. And, for most of those eight years, I’ve been content to play my role as a tiny cog within the great wheelhouse of corporate machinery.
4 Reasons Why the Default Startup Is Default Dead
#2 — “Racism is costing us billions” In hindsight, the writing was already on the wall. As we stumbled headlong towards the end of 2019 — a raucous decade of free-flowing capital, messianic founders, and billion-dollar valuations — the inherent flaws in the startup and VC landscape were beginning to be exposed. Between 2009 and 2019, the volume of VC deals being inked more than doubled, and the total valuation of those deals increased five-fold to $140billion.
Every Startup Should Know This One Simple Rule of Marketing
The golden rule of marketing explained in one easy to understand chart Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay I can’t tell you how many planning sessions I’ve sat through over the past few years — be it with tiny operations with thousand dollar budgets all the way through to multi-billion-dollar brands — which have been derailed by a version of one of the following comments: Yeah, but no-one actually watches TV anymore.
6 Things Every Startup and Investor Needs to Know Right Now
#1 — 50% of startups have less than 6 months to live Photo by Daria Nepriakhina on Unsplash Right now, startups and investors around the world are at panic stations trying to figure out how to survive this unprecedented situation and unfolding financial catastrophe. Of course, startups and investors in some sectors are enjoying an unprecedented and unexpected boom time.
How to Grow Your Business in a Future Run by Voice Assistants
Voice assistants like Alexa and Siri are changing the way people search for, and interact with, your business. Photo by Andres Urena on Unsplash In recent years, we’ve all seen articles spouting lofty predictions claiming that this year (insert any of 2017, 2018, 2019…) will be the ‘year of voice’. Now, I’m not suggesting that 2020 will finally be ‘the year’, far from it.
Five Principles for Marketing During a Crisis.
Businesses must have a clear and methodical marketing plan for navigating the uncharted waters ahead. Image by StockSnap by Pixabay For once in our lives, it's likely that we really are living through a moment of unique historical importance. As the full impact of the pandemic continues to unfold across the globe, we are steadily coming to the conclusion that this is different. The pandemic has fundamentally changed all of our personal and professional lives. In response, we have no choice to adapt.
Why You Should Be Spending More on Marketing Right Now
During a crisis, the smart money is on those who invest in marketing and take a long term view of success. Photo by Steve Buissinne on Pixabay On a call with investors last month, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincy stated that due to the “significant and profound impact” of Coronavirus on the company’s first-quarter results, the soft-drinks giant will be pausing the majority of its marketing spend for the immediate future.
The Types of Startups That Are Thriving Right Now
Niche startups are finding themselves in the best position to take advantage of an economy turned upside-down. Photo by Austin Distel on Unsplash No-one is “winning” during this pandemic. As the volume of cases worldwide grows to more than 3.5 million and the number of deaths approaches 300,000, our lives have been cruelly turned upside-down. Making matters worse, until we arrive upon a vaccine, we are hurtling towards economic catastrophe.
It’s Never to Early to Start Marketing
Getting marketing right is the hardest part of running a startup or small business. You need to start right now. Photo by Campaign Creators on Unsplash Starting your own business is never easy. Anyone who tells you tells you otherwise is either lying or trying to sell you something. Even for the most hardened of entrepreneurs, it’s a process that requires an inordinate amount of time, effort, and dedication. The simple fact is this — most startups will fail.
Class book review: A Witch Alone by James Nicol
Having not read the first Apprentice Witch book, I went into this a little sceptically. Would my class or I have the background knowledge needed to comprehend this story? After reading, I would say my scepticism was about 50 per cent warranted. The story is a charming tale of Arianwyn the witch, who is sent on a secret mission by the Witch High Council. The characterisation of the lead and the other characters is great – you want to go on an adventure with them and you are willing her to succeed.

THE SONG FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE By A.F. Harrold Illustrated by Levi Pinfold 217 pp. Bloomsbury. $16.99. (Middle grade; ages 8 to 12) The landscape of fantasy storytelling is changing rapidly. “World-building,” once the exclusive domain of fantasy novelists, is now a term more closely associated with movie and video game franchises.
