Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Unfortunately not! There is a certain charm to it in the movie "All The Presidents Men". I've used a cash register though, if that counts.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A journalist is the credible messenger of information, it means I gain the readers trust because the buck of accuracy falls with me.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Google docs for writing, Premiere Pro for video-editing, and Teeline for shorthand.

Why did you become a journalist?

To give a voice to the voiceless. Many around the world do not have the privilege of freedom, so its my duty to help those in need.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Keep writing and recording. With due practice and intentionality we can all hit our limits — the real test is consistency.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading a book — on the computer. I buy most of my books online, its a spirit of the times. I do need to the hit the gym more.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Definitely the Wall Street Journal, I'm an avid follower of the news across the pond and their scoops keeps me up to date.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That China news must be split into a "panda hugger" or "dragon slayer". I think the nuance is easy to miss because its such a hot topic.
