James Burleson’s Biography

James Burleson has built a career of more than three decades that brings together finance, entrepreneurship, and service to the community. He has earned recognition for guiding investments, founding businesses, and supporting projects that strike a balance between innovation and long-term growth. Alongside his professional work, he has consistently given time and resources to community organizations, showing that his commitment to service is just as important as his work in finance and business.

His path in finance began early. At the age of 24, James became one of the youngest individuals to hold a seat and serve as a market maker on the Pacific Stock Exchange. His leadership skills were quickly noticed, and he was elected the youngest Chair of the Nominating Committee for the Board of Governors. These early responsibilities placed him in a unique position within a competitive environment. Over the years, he held senior roles with well-regarded firms, including Letco LMM, Joseph D. Heard Jr. Inc., Premier Trading Group, and Charles Schwab. As a Partner and Lead Market Maker at Letco, he played a key role in strengthening the firm until it was sold to Toronto Dominion Bank in 2002. His depth of knowledge in derivatives and trading became a central part of his professional identity.

In 2004, he founded Burleson + Company, an independent advisory business that grew to oversee nearly $800 million in assets. The firm focused on wealth management and financial planning, emphasizing both results and the alignment of money with personal goals. He later extended his reach through Northern Peak Consulting, offering advice on operations and long-term growth. His entrepreneurial efforts also included venture capital investments through BCo Venture Fund I, which supported early-stage companies. Among these was Pathwater, a bottled water brand with a focus on sustainability that challenged traditional market practices.

Beyond business, he has long been active in community leadership. For nearly two decades, he has served on the Sonoma–Marin Fair Board, supporting youth, agriculture, and cultural programs. He also spent over a decade with the Rotary Club of Petaluma, including time as Treasurer of its foundation. His dedication spanned over twenty years on the St. Vincent Parish Finance Committee and the Board of St. Vincent High School. Over the last 25 years, James has also contributed to groups such as the Petaluma Educational Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, and Polly Klaas Foundation.

Raised in a military family, he developed discipline and adaptability that guided his choices. After completing a finance degree at the University of Texas at Austin, he maintained close ties to his alma mater and fraternity, Sigma Chi. Outside of work, he has enjoyed skiing with his children, golfing in the Utah mountains, traveling, and continuing to follow the markets with interest.

James Burleson’s journey reflects steady progress in finance, dedication to entrepreneurship, and a deep sense of service. His career demonstrates that success is not only measured by professional growth but also by meaningful contributions to the community and family traditions.
