James Kelly’s Biography

I am a versatile, dedicated and conscientious multi-platform journalist with extensive experience of reporting international, domestic and regional news stories.

My television work includes reporting for BBC One’s Breakfast programme, the BBC News Channel, BBC World News and BBC Weekend News. As a radio correspondent I have reported for the World Service, 5 live, Radio 4 and Radio 2, broadcasting live on breaking stories, often on location. I have also authored countless radio news summaries and am one of the small team of news readers on the UK’s most popular radio station, Radio 2, and the BBC’s cutting-edge digital offering, 6 Music. As a producer I have helped to compile and edit Radio 4’s flagship 1800 bulletin, working alongside senior BBC correspondents.

In addition to this I have served as a political reporter with the BBC’s General News Service (GNS) at Millbank, delivering bespoke TV and radio content from Westminster to outlets across the English regions. Online journalism too is within my skill-set: the hugely popular BBC News website has published a number of my articles and features.

Before I joined the BBC, I was a newspaper journalist and rose to the frontline position of News Editor on a daily paper before moving into broadcasting. I have passed the National Certificate Examination in Newspaper Journalism (NCE), accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). I am well versed in journalism law and write shorthand at a speed of 100 words per minute.
