Human Element By Collin Townsend Velkoff
Multidisciplinary artist Collin Townsend Velkoff creates artworks that focus on materials, form, and perception. With the Human Element series, he explores the relationship between humanity and nature. More specifically, the series of sculptures aims to capture humanity’s dependency on the environment and its materials. To create the artworks, Collin Townsend Velkoff developed a sand casting technique which also became an important part of the series.
The Jack Lamp Family
Portuguese designer and artist André Teoman makes bold and eye-catching products and artworks that tell a story. His work often features whimsy and surreal details as well as vibrant colors and playful designs. The Jack Lamp Family series follows the same pattern, but adds plenty of humor to the mix. It’s a conceptual series that blurs the line between sculptural artwork and functional design. The collection also provides a new take on lighting.
Elda Bellone - Encoded Icons
Born in Italy, architect, designer and artist Elda Bellone is currently based in Brooklyn, NYC. From an early age, her creative pursuits defied categorization. Blurring the line between art languages, Elda Bellone’s work occupies an area of “open design” that views function and form through an innovative point of view. Multi-functional objects, architectural details incorporated in product design, a blend of analogue and digital techniques.
Piles Vases By Sylvie Godel
Swiss porcelain artist Sylvie Godel loves to travel the world and to reference aspects of different cultures in her work. For the Piles series, she drew inspiration from the time spent in the city of Jingdezhen, China. Renowned across the world for its porcelain industry which dates back to more than 2000 years, the city became one of the main inspirations for the Piles collection of vases.
Darkness at the Fingertips By Adam Kencki
Based in Czech Republic, Adam Kencki photographs the people, the things, and the world around him, often in black and white. In the ‘Darkness at the Fingertips’ series, the images feature simple everyday moments, portraits, or natural landscapes. Apart from their shared gray-scale palette, the photos also have something deeper in common. They provide a glimpse not into the lives of others, but into the life of the photographer.
The Concéntrico Festival
Held in Logroño, Spain, the Concéntrico Architecture and Design Festival welcomes visitors into an inspiring city filled with installations. For this year’s fourth edition, BoysPlayNice accompanied Czech studio Mjölk architekti to Logroño. The photographers captured the heart and soul of the festival, introducing it to the world.
The Faces Of A Shipyard
Based in Nantes, France, Sylvain Bonniol creates photographs that blur the line between art and documentary photography. Throughout his work, the photographer captures people in their industrial, architectural or scientific working environments. Glimpses into the lives of workers and also into the industries that make the world go round.
Slidings By Jamie North
Sydney-based artist Jamie North spent his childhood in two different worlds. On one side, a coastal area with a bushland landscape in New South Wales. On the other, the industrial side of Newcastle, near the BHP Steelworks. His work clearly draws inspiration from both. Featuring a blend of concrete, aggregate of steel slag, along with native Australian plants, Jamie North’s sculptures and large-scale installations captivate and draw the viewer closer.
Sydney's Biennale: All futures lead to now
These days, anyone wanting to play with the future had best be very careful if they want to avoid being effortlessly wrong-footed. That awareness seems to be the spirit in which Stephanie Rosenthal, artistic director of the 2016 Sydney Biennale, has recycled William Gibson’s quote about the future already being here, just not very evenly distributed. It is a way of loosely binding the hundreds of artists, artworks and events in the festival.
