From Hexham childhood to Egglescliffe parish - Nigel’s journey of quiet influence
Influencer culture may leave some cold, but one Teesside priest is quietly shaping his community for the better as plans are drawn up to turn Egglescliffe's parish hall into a welcoming hub, writes Jan Hunter In my lifetime, the world has changed enormously, technology being the greatest change and as it continues to evolve, I do try to keep up, even though new words are creeping into our vocabulary.
Prison charity helps teenage boys rebuild their futures
Jan Hunter meets the team at Wetherby Young Offenders Institution's In2Out charity, where staff are working to restore hope for teenage boys who many believe have none left. It is both an honour and a privilege in this job I have, to meet the most extraordinary people and hear their stories. The media would class them as "ordinary people", preferring to label people who are not high-profile by this title.
The businessman behind new hub bringing together bike hire, a café, and holidays
A once-forgotten trekking centre beneath Captain Cook’s monument has been transformed into a thriving rural enterprise, as entrepreneur Mark Pearson builds on his family’s legacy at Bike Base in Gribdale. Jan Hunter reports. Bike Base in Gribdale, Great Ayton couldn't be in a more stunning setting. Nestled under Captain Cook's monument, with views of Roseberry Topping and the Cleveland Hills, it was, in the early seventies, an equine trekking centre.
The Yorkshire bookshop and cafe for people, families and students
Jan Hunter explores the enduring magic of bookshops — those timeless havens for readers where nostalgia, discovery and the scent of new pages continue to thrive despite modern distractions. Bookshops have always been a big draw for me. My mother was an avid reader and my Christmas stocking would always contain either one of the annuals such as the Bobbsey Twins, or the latest Famous Five novel. Bookshops have charm, and despite the competition, always seem to be busy.
Nursery founder talks families, awards and learning in the great outdoors
Finding a suitable nursery for your pre-school child is one of the most difficult decisions in life. Often, going back to work after maternity leave is hard, but sometimes parents, especially mothers, are condemned for returning in the child's early years, which, because of my own experience, I think is rather unfair. As a newly-single parent living in Manchester with a one-year-old daughter, I had no choice.
Seniors with the SES
On Tuesday 12th September at the monthly meeting of Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Club, a presentation on the role of the SES volunteers was given by Greg Dennis and Reinhard Ryva. They are two of the 34 volunteers at Glasshouse Mountains SES based in Beerwah. The seniors were advised of the “do’s and don’ts” in emergencies be it fire, flood, cyclone or any other severe weather event. Their role is to provide a diverse range of functions in response to disasters and emergencies.
Seniors Out & About
On Monday 10th July, members of Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens Club celebrated the festive season early at Christmas in July at the Caloundra RSL Club. A two-course Christmas-themed main course and dessert was served, and Laura Doolan provided entertainment with a variety of Christmas and well known songs. There was also a raffle supporting Dementia Carers Caloundra. A very fun day was enjoyed by all.
Colour Theory: Let’s Talk About Red
Colours are a wondrous, beautiful thing. They brighten up the world, and work harmoniously together to create stunning variety in the things we see. But did you know that there’s actually a science behind the way our brains process them? That aside from our subjective preferences, there are objective meanings behind each colour?
A neglected transition in nursing: The need to support the move from clinician to academic properly
Throughout their career nurses may go through several transitions, the most commonly discussed is the move from student status to that of a newly Registered Nurse—with a substantial literature on how this change can be a source of stress (Haplin, Terry, & Curzio, 2017; Suresh, Matthews, & Coyne, 2013).
