As Rochester prepares to celebrate Susan B. Anthony’s 193rd birthday on Feb. 15—while the nation approaches its 250th anniversary—it is worth asking an uncomfortable question: Would Anthony be happy with where we are today? The honest answer is no. Anthony devoted her life to securing women’s suffrage, knowing she would not live to see it. It eventually passed in 1920.

Coming Together to Succeed
Alexandria, VA – As we approach the holidays, I am reflecting on the role men have played propelling women forward. I am married to a man who is a true partner. Even though we had children, I was able to crisscross the United States and Canada for years in search of the hidden story about Martha Matilda Harper, the woman who invented the reclining the shampoo chair and launched modern retail franchising resulting in an empire of 500+ franchises worldwide.
How Women’s Light Rescues Thousands
Alexandria, VA – As I get into my car, set my GPS, adjust my rearview mirror, turn on my turn signal or windshield wiper, I thank the many women who designed these innovative godsends and I know their names because of the National Center of Women’s Innovations (NCWI). As I plan for my upcoming Thanksgiving feast and imagine what life would be without a mechanical dishwasher or the practical paper bag designed by women, I sigh with gratitude.
Alexandria’s Link to Computer Programming
Alexandria, VA – Ever wonder where the name of Old Town’s Ada’s restaurant comes from? I did since it was the first restaurant I ate in when I came to Alexandria. According to Scott Shaw, Ada’s co-owner and Honorary Advisory Board member for the National Center of Women’s Innovations (NCWI), the restaurant is named after Ada Lovelace. Shaw explains, “We believe it is important to recognize women in STEM,” and Lovelace certainly qualified as a role model.

Manatee commissioners are an embarrassment. And they are putting us at risk | Opinion
Manatee County is on the cusp of becoming a place most residents are embarrassed to live in. County commissioners are changing the once problem-solving, embracing county into a land of irresponsible, extremist leadership that rejects the public will to get things done for broad community good. A few years ago, Stephen King and John Grisham donated their time to help the community by raising over $500,000 for the county library system.

Jane Plitt: Torch is passed to young generation in March for Our Lives
I was surprised by how different the March for Our Lives was from the prior marches I had participated in for equal rights and religious freedom. Because of an elder cousin's 80th birthday, I ended up marching in New York City where, as a 70-year-old, I and other elders were outnumbered by youngsters marching for the first time. These kids were fresh, determined and articulate, but they were newbies at marches. The speakers were not well-known celebrities.
Heartening to find community’s delightful ways | Bradenton Herald
At a time when divisions in our country are being fanned, it is heartening to see how our community is finding ways to delight us all.For the first time I celebrated New Year’s Day with a group of casual acquaintances who decided to stroll together around the 487-acre preserve at Robinson Preserve, located in Northwest Bradenton. The group included singles, couples, a child and several dogs; my husband and I were the elders.
Compassion from friends abounds after frightening facial injury | Bradenton Herald
My commitment to being positive got challenged recently when I tripped on a Bradenton sidewalk and smashed my face, requiring surgery to piece me back together. With bloodied eyes, facial disfigurement and swelling, I looked like Dracula reincarnated.Yet, the experience reinforced how wonderful people can be and how individuals can make a difference in our lives.
What’s good — in Bhutan and Bradenton | Bradenton Herald
Instead of facing the full ugly political campaign, I jumped at the opportunity to travel to Bhutan where Gross National Happiness is the measure of national success versus our Gross National Product. GNH includes such benchmarks as infant mortality, literacy, and adult mortality. GNP measures consumption, investment, government spending and net exports. There is an obvious contrast of priorities and measurement tools. I wanted to discover if it made a difference in human lives and atmosphere.
A positive outlook overpowers the negative news | Bradenton Herald
The pervasive negative news about hatred, killings, racial, gender, and religious divides has created a depressing cloud over our heads. Another outlook is desperately needed. I checked our Declaration of Independence and was reminded that we fought over the right to life, liberty and happiness. I have decided to assert my right to happiness by consciously looking for what’s good. I’m uncovering many moments of joy, but also guideposts that point the way.
