Hands That Carry Forward
Loss, sadness, and transition is hard. Pick up the pieces and get creative. Death, near-death, divorce, loss, transitions, graveyard, cemetery, urn plans, complicated grief, hospice care, all issues related to end of life. Not accepting letters to deceased or poetry. Press enter or click to view image in full size I never thought it could happen, but my horse — must have known — when he gathered himself, muscles taut, and we cleared the fence as smoothly as any other afternoon.

Fighting the Dragon with Words
“No one ever told me that grief felt so much like fear.” C.S. Lewis Dear Grief, I’m writing a letter to you since you aren’t picking up on my signals. You’re like a clinging boyfriend who refuses to accept that it’s over. Haven’t you noticed that I change the subject when you get too heavy? I walk out of the house to get away, but you tag along like a little child, pestering me… asking endless annoying questions. If I were wearing a skirt, you’d be tugging on it.
She Was a Genius at April Fool’s Jokes
LOSS A letter ‘from my sister’ (As her sister, I took the liberty of writing from the first person point-of-view and read it at her grave site on April 1, 2024) First, all is well. Please don’t stay here long and cry or feel overcome with sadness. Because now I know the answer to the question: “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (1 Corinthians 15: 55–58) God swept it away the moment my heart stopped. I tell you; I was at peace.
Leprosy is Rampant
A Rose by any Other Name… Yesterday, in every Catholic, Episcopal, and in hundreds of other churches worldwide, we all heard the same reading. It was the familiar story of Jesus healing the man with leprosy. “A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees. “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured.
Help! My Address Book is Obsolete
Help! My Address Book is Obsolete After writing my Christmas cards this morning, addressing every envelope by hand, which is practically archaic. I know. I did try to keep my “contacts” on my computer and use the handy printed stick-on labels. That lasted about five minutes: those two divorced; they moved (again), or that one died. It’s been coming for a long time, but every year: I think I’ll do it next year. Knowing there are more people who are “on the other side” than living.
I Used to Be
Until last month (and for sixty-eight years) I used to be Jennifer's sister. I always will be. Now, only in the past tense. I dislike the term, "unexpected death." Because can we ever, really, expect it? In my life, that answer is "no." We walked through loss together. It used to be "we." I've lost my sibling, my friend, my confidant my rival, my role and place in the family. Gone, too, is any opportunity to change the relationship. I am sure there were fences to mend and words to be shared.

Sunset Years
By Jane Ann Tucker Thanks be to God, from whom all blessings flow ... ~ The Doxology ~ Photo property of author: Count them, eight! I sit here at my desk looking at the framed picture of my grandchildren. And I think and feel grateful for this rich life. I wonder. How could I, an imperfect human being, have anything to do with what I see before me as the sun sets on this Friday evening in June.
The Eighth Of June
Graduate: (intransitive verb) to pass from one stage of experience, proficiency, or prestige to a usually higher one Today is that day. What day? The day my mother died (nearly forty years ago). Always heavyhearted, until today. Here I am in the same hotel I stayed when she was born. Who's she? Caitlyn, my firstborn granddaughter. Today she graduates; a new memory made. I needed this. Not the dreaded old one. Who am I? Older, happy, and proud.
A Poem for My Son
Who Knows Where the Time Goes ~ Sandy Denny ~ My baby is turning fifteen. Sullen and sulky, glaring up at me Because I stare at him too much. How I wish I could make you understand Your growth, this emerging independent self Has taken me like a storm. I'm off guard: new territory. I've had daughters, a sister... I know girls. But never a son Turn into a young man Before my eyes. Metamorphosis. Who is this boy with boat-like feet? Struggling to find space for them. I don't recognize this stranger.

‘Thank you’ for a great 4th of July
For the past five years, every 4th of July, I get up early and head to Cave Spring for the annual parade. This “homemade” affair appeals to me on many levels because it represents families and communities coming together to celebrate another year of freedom in this great country of ours. I’ve learned that the parade was Christa Jackson’s idea 33 years ago and I want to personally thank her. I also learned this week that Christa’s son, Chris, has only missed one of those parades in his entire life.
