Understanding Foot Drop
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institutes of Health, defines foot drop as “the inability to raise the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the muscles that lift the foot.” Muscles in the leg cannot raise the foot at the ankle, or the front part of the foot, due to paralysis of muscles that lift the foot.
Tips for Swallowing Pills
Swallowing pills — medicine, vitamins or supplements—is the most commonly-reported problem for people living with dysphagia, according to Jan C. Pryor, MA CCC-SLP, BRS-S, Speech-Language Pathologist. Water is a usual companion with pills, yet there are alternative options besides the clear liquid. “It is very important to take a full glass of water with pills,” says Pryor, who is also a dysphagia consultant with the National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders.

Free Shuttle through September 13; Bridge Art incorporates Pieces of TZB; Lingering Thoughts
As the bridge project and my time documenting it are completed, I twice walked from South Nyack to Tarrytown in June. It won’t be the last time as those 3.6 miles afford gorgeous views of the Hudson Valley. Once to took the free shuttle bus that operates Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays back to my car at the South Nyack landing.

Sights and Stops from South Nyack to Tarrytown

People were friendly, the views were spectacular, I enjoyed seeing the bridge and landings art . . . and realized I’d missed a sight. One of several reasons to return. Till next time! Thruway, Bridge Authorities to remain Separate
Throwback Thursday: Last month I wrote an article about a controversial proposal in the state’s budget. As it was not published by the assigning editor, I’m posting it here. Thank you in appreciation to everyone who shared stories and submitted photos while hoping the proposal would be defeated. It was.
Blue Sky and Fresh Air: antidotes for Loneliness
Nearly two weeks since I last posted and less time since I checked progress on the project. The new building for Troop T has state police cars parked in front while work on the administrative building and landing areas continue. Yesterday was eight years since my first bridge meeting in Tarrytown. A recent bout of cabin fever was temporarily thwarted by writing some personal thoughts.

One More Time: at the NYSTA’s FOIL Rabbit Hole
Records Access Officer Jill B. Warner is trying to lead me down the same rabbit hole as when I asked about the defective mobile concrete batch plant five years ago. The same rabbit hole that prompted other reporters and the bridge project’s design-build team to file lawsuits against the agency.

turning the page
5 Jan 2020 For years, Jessica Kaplan and Mark Fowler had a good idea of what retirement would look like. They just needed to be patient and devise their plan. Kaplan, now 68, had been teaching elementary and middle school at Rye Country Day School before retiring in 2015. Fowler, her 70-year-old husband, practiced law with Satterlee Stephens LLP and represented publishers in copyright disputes and libel defense cases.
Second Outreach Center closes; New Exit 10; SUP Work continues; Toll Relief for Local Residents
What remained of the Tappan Zee Bridge lingered into 2019: its east anchor span was to be demolished, then weather intervened, and then it happened. A new configuration to Thruway Exit 10 eliminated a portion of the loop, where motorists could exit to Clinton Avenue; second and third traffic patterns for the exit were to follow. Work continued on the westbound span’s path and connecting spur path, the old bridge’s supports were disappearing, and four Peregrine falcon chicks needed names.
Good News for Westchester and Rockland Residents: Minimal Toll Raises on New Bridge
Commuters and residents see the bridge as the most convenient way to get across the river; the Thruway Authority views it as part of its bigger revenue picture. Yet its members heard Westchester and Rockland residents explain how toll increases would impact them “loud and clear,” Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll said at the agency’s Board of Directors meeting December 19.
Flashback Friday: Bridge Path Survey yields Different Views, Concerns for South Nyack
The walking and bicycle path is set to open within months (no date has been confirmed). Two and one-half years ago the project asked for input on the new bridge’s path; one sticky point was will it remain open 24/7, be open from dusk to dawn (that will change with the seasons) or have set hours? The debate continues as bicycling groups push for round-the-clock access to a path that will be monitored how? What about safety issues? Noise? Its side path opens into a quiet South Nyack neighborhood.
Guest Blog: Bridge inspiration for Creative Mosaic
By Luis Barcelo During the last week of October, my daughter’s Global History class in Ossining High School was asked to do a modern-day rendition of a Byzantine Empire mosaic. Although the assignment originally called for students to take a selfie and use that as their foundation, my daughter asked if she could instead choose something that she sees every day. She lives in Ossining and spends a lot of time in Tarrytown, where the new Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge is part of this landscape.

TBT: Early 1950s South Nyack prior to the TZB
Photo of the South Nyack train station, the Blue Flame, Eddie Nolan’s Restaurant Bar, and Gus Gaetjen’s Garage prior to being razed. Demolition for the Tappan Zee Bridge and the New York State Thruway’s Exit 10 carried on in front of them February 1, 1954, less than two years before the bridge opened. Photo of this former village landmark was taken in 1953; the station, located on Cornelison Avenue, was photographed in 1951.
TBT: Super Crane makes First Girder Placement
Very exciting day as the first steel girder assembly was hoisted and placed onto the New NY Bridge during a seven-hour process. The 1,110-ton, 400-foot girder assembly – three beams assembled at the Port of Coeymans – was hoisted onto the new bridge’s 14-foot-thick foundation. Dave Capobianco, a New NY Bridge project manager, said the communications conduits and wiring are not on this initial assembly and will be on the next two-girder segment still being worked on at the port.
Two SN Residents pledge Open Communication, Transparency, & Solutions for SUP-related Issues
“We want to ensure that the concept chosen will be the best for our residents and will eliminate parking from our streets while allowing for economic development,” South Nyack Mayor Christian told the Rockland County Times four years ago. Village residents think otherwise. They say crews doing major movements during rush hour and creating noise at all hours of the day in the lower part of the village is not helpful at all, and it doesn’t seem like the mayor has a plan to resolve it.

I Lift NY arriving at its destination/© Janie Rosman 2014 It arrived with great fanfare five years ago and left quietly last weekend. Its work on the project completed, the I Lift NY headed downriver accompanied by three tugboats. The photo below is from a video captured by Felice Ehrlich. Some stats: Its lifting Capacity is 1,929 tons, and its boom length is 328 feet. It raised 140 steel girder assemblies, four main span crossbeams, and 120 road deck panels.
New Car, New State License Plate and New Fee
Nine years with the same license plate means next year I’ll either get the state’s new design or choose a specialty plate. The new bridge was not chosen; however, it a bridge was to have been chosen, many would have preferred this: Still shiny with no peeling paint, my plates were transferred to the 2017 certified preowned car I bought last week. There has never been a time when the Thruway Authority hasn’t changed me, even when my E-ZPass® tag wasn’t mounted on the car’s windshield.

Getting Nowhere: Thruway on a Friday Afternoon
I took the above photo four years ago from the roof of the TIME Hotel in Nyack when its then-general manager gave me a tour of the construction site. Traffic is no problem when you’re watching it from afar. And now . . . “Traffic is backed up to the (Garden State) Parkway north from the Thruway,” the local traffic reporter told me via my car radio. The westbound backup continued past Exit 5 into White Plains and probably to Exit 8 and beyond. Didn’t make it to the bridge.
Sweltering Heat and a Festive Time at the River
It seemed as if everyone else was oblivious to the oppressive heat and humidity tonight. A concert in Pierson Park filled the air with music while families picnicked on the grass. Students from the EF International Language Campus in Tarrytown climbed on the rocks and the wall around the viewing area, laughing and speaking their native languages as they took photos of each other with the slowly-turning-pink bridge as their backdrop.
Low Turnout at Toll Advisory Panel Meetings
Thinking I’d be unable to drive due to the ace bandage on my right wrist and hand I emailed my comments to the Toll Advisory Panel instead of going to the meeting in Tarrytown last night. The hand surgery didn’t happen by quirk and by fate so I spent the past week meeting staff and getting to know residents at the nursing home where mom is temporarily staying. Things worked out well in that respect. Surgery was rescheduled. About the toll meetings . . .
Task Force will hear Residents’ Input and Suggestions for Toll Relief on New Bridge
A new, four-person task force will take the first step toward toll relief solutions for Westchester and Rockland residents who cross the new Cuomo Bridge starts with two listening sessions next week. The public sessions will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Westchester Marriott, 670 White Plains Road, Tarrytown, and Thursday, July 18, at The Time Nyack Hotel, 400 High Ave.
As We near 2020, State takes Action about Tolls
The toll advisory task force is now a reality and has until mid-2016 to brainstorm toll reviews, potential commuter discount options, a resident discount program and commercial vehicle rates. Governor Cuomo spoke about a resident discount early on; I’ve always felt commercial vehicles using the bridge deserve to pay more. Thruway Authority Executive Director Robert Megna and state Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew J.

Throwback Thursday: Deck Panel Installation
This time last year: Crews continue to set precast concrete deck panels atop the steel girders, install rebar, pour concrete and ready the driving surface of the eastbound span. This is what the westbound span looked like before its final driving surface was applied. Deck panels were interlocked via their hairpin reinforcing steel bars; the spaces between them were closed with reinforcing concrete. They’re doing other work, too, including removing sections of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

No Surprise Caregiving
Having my mom evaluated I wanted to try and get her into a nursing home, or some kind of assisted living. We were told by doctors that she’s not to be by herself, or do her own meds by herself. I currently do her pills weekly and my daughter who she lives with, distributes them daily. My daughter is going to be moving out of the area and Mom doesn’t do well with steps. So she won’t be able to live with me. We want her to be safe and she falls a lot.
Did You Know These Facts About the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge?
Its spans opening roughly one year apart, the new $4 billion bridge between Westchester and Rockland counties, designed and built by consortium Tappan Zee Constructors, LLC (TZC) sparked our curiosity, and maybe yours, too. When the project is completed, both spans will have four general traffic lanes, two emergency shoulders on each side of the respective span and a bus lane on the right side.
