Ryan Walters craves national spotlight while Oklahoma education remains low in rankings | Guest column
Janis Blevins August 14, 2024 at 6:02 AM·4 min read There is no evidence that the Oklahoma State Board of Education is anything other than a rubber stamp to whatever state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters proposes. An actual discussion of consequences before the always unanimous vote is a very rare occurrence. Laws and rulings seem to be of little consequence in considering items for their approval.
Walters, staff's explanations in meeting revealed even more concerns | Opinion
Janis Blevins July 5, 2024 at 4:00 AM·3 min read It was in the June 20 meeting between the Legislative Office of Fiscal Transparency (LOFT), the Oklahoma State Department of Education, and selected legislators that the state Education Department inadvertently made surprising revelations concerning data security. In the desperate attempt to avoid the truth and instead pass blame to others, the state Education Department revealed glaring errors that are of major significance.
Legislators' lack of action on Ryan Walters administrative rules is 'truly reprehensible!'
Janis Blevins June 5, 2024 at 7:01 AM·2 min read Oklahoma has a desperate need for legislators with integrity and those that are more concerned with what is best for Oklahoma rather than an overriding concern about their reelection. Even though administrative rules for the Oklahoma State Department of Education are to be authorized by legislative request, state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters took the move to submit rules without that authorization.
Ryan Walters acts like a bully. To expect him to properly address bullying is not realistic
Bullying is conduct that cannot be objectively justified by a reasonable code of conduct, and whose effect is to threaten, undermine, constrain, humiliate and harm the reputation, self-esteem, self-confidence or ability to perform. Unfortunately, the Oklahoma public education system is now experiencing the harmful effects of the bullying of Ryan Walters.
Is most recent lawsuit against ClassWallet an attempt to deflect blame from state actors?
How much longer, guest columnist asks, will state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters be allowed to continue to administer funds without clearly developed requirements and adequate controls and safeguards?
Guest: Oklahoma is No. 6 in childhood hunger. It seems Stitt wants to keep us in Top 10
Do you remember his excitement when Gov. Kevin Stitt announced the private school tax credit? At that time, no one, including the governor himself, had a clue on how that would be administered. Even when many questioned the “estimate” of $1 million for administration costs, Stitt and most Republicans ignored it. Have you noticed how many are silent on the mere $3 million of additional costs?
Ryan Walters’ lips say one thing, but his actions reflect the opposite
State Superintendent Ryan Walters’ has said that “I’m willing to do anything to turn these schools around. I’m willing to do whatever it takes for these kids.” But it is difficult to find any actions that support those words he spoke about improving the academic outcomes at Tulsa Public Schools. Rather than presenting positive plans, he continues with threats and additional requirements.
You can blame Kevin Stitt for the public health lab's failure
Gov. Kevin Stitt made one damaging decision after another in order to accomplish his personal goal of moving the public health lab to Stillwater. It has now been two years and the lab has a dismal record of producing accurate test results. Thirty individual tests are still being outsourced, but at least those tests are more likely to be accurate.
