Dr. Abu-Sitta: Beirut ‘felt like a day in Shifa Hospital’
Dr. Abu-Sitta: Beirut ‘felt like a day in Shifa Hospital’ By Janna Kadri | Al Mayadeen | April 11, 2026 A wave of Israeli bombardments that killed hundreds of civilians across Lebanon within minutes was deliberately designed to overwhelm the country’s healthcare system and maximize deaths, Dr. Ghassan Abu-Sitta told Al Mayadeen. “Basically, in a period of 10 minutes, over 1,400 people were wounded and 340 were killed,” he said.
World mourns Michael Parenti
Born in 1933 in New York City to a working-class Italian American family, Michael Parenti often said that his political commitments were grounded not in abstraction, but in lived experience. Class was not something he discovered in theory; it was something he grew up inside. He earned a PhD and taught political science and history, but his outspoken Marxism and anti-imperialism meant he was steadily pushed to the margins of academia.
Trump threats push Greenland closer to Denmark, ex-MP says
By Janna Kadri | Source: Al Mayadeen English Jan 28, 2026 Former Greenlandic lawmaker and deputy chairwoman of the Cooperation Party, Tillie Martinussen, says US President Donald Trump’s rhetoric and threats toward Greenland have deeply alienated the island’s Indigenous population and reshaped public opinion in the opposite direction Washington may have intended, strengthening support for remaining within the Kingdom of Denmark.
Post-Assad Syria rebuilt for US power, not its people: Opinion
The fall of Bashar al-Assad should have opened a path toward political self-determination. Instead, Syria is being reorganized around the requirements of US power, Gulf capital, and a regional architecture increasingly defined by normalization with "Israel." The appointment of Ahmed al-Sharaa, the rebranded former HTS emir known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, has not liberated Syria from authoritarianism or external control. It has simply replaced one form of dependency with another.
USD to stay dominant despite de-dollarization: Expert to Al Mayadeen
American economist James K. Galbraith says that despite expanding efforts by major economies to settle trade in local currencies and diversify reserves, the dollar-based global monetary system is likely to endure due to the absence of a comparable alternative at scale.
The steadfastness of Iran is unmatched in recent history
With the US and "Israel" threatening escalatory action against Iran, we are once again witnessing a perilous episode in the long arc of imperial intervention. Yet beneath the surface-level military posturing lies a deeper structural truth: a war against Iran is a war against the developing world. After all, persons in power who hoard their wealth in dollars and in Western financial markets share the same interests irrespective of their nationalities or skin color.
The strategic and tactical gains of Operation People of Might
On the morning of November 27, 2024, the ceasefire agreement between "Israel" and Hezbollah came into effect, marking the conclusion of a protracted and devastating war that began in October 2023. This agreement, brokered by international powers such as the United States and France but ultimately shaped by the Resistance's uncompromising demands, underscored a pivotal shift in the trajectory of the war, with terms decisively favoring Hezbollah's strategic objectives.
French journalist sparks outrage over civilizational superiority claim
French journalist Eugénie Bastié has ignited a heated debate after declaring on CNEWS that France possesses a "civilizational superiority" over Algeria. The remarks, made during a televised discussion, have drawn sharp criticism for their colonial undertones and perceived glorification of imperialist ideologies. Bastié argued that France’s capacity for self-critique is a hallmark of Western civilization.
Jerusalem Post op-ed advocates for territorial conquest of S. Lebanon
A recent opinion piece in The Jerusalem Post, titled "Southern Lebanon is Actually Northern Israel," exemplifies yet another attempt to legitimize expansionist ambitions through what can only be described as Zionist propaganda. The article undermines Lebanon's sovereignty while distorting Judaism by weaponizing it to rationalize territorial conquest. "Historically speaking, southern Lebanon is in fact northern Israel, and the roots of the Jewish people in the area run deep.
Sayyed Nasrallah's martyrdom: A catalyst for renewed resistance
The martyrdom of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, a monumental figure in Hezbollah and the broader resistance movement against "Israel", marks a turning point not in Hezbollah's demise but in its renewal. Sayyed Nasrallah's martyrdom, while symbolically significant, has unveiled the inner core of the Resistance's structure that transcends individual leadership.
Why Lebanon's fragmented society must unite in supporting Hezbollah
There is more at stake in betraying one's own than simply standing on the 'other' side of history. One's own, however, is not one with whom one shares a cultural identity of sorts. Cultural identities are fluid and can hardly be pinned down as a characteristic of a group without a heavy dose of arbitrariness. After all, it is capital or the political power in charge that empowers selected cultural traits politically to divide the masses.
History's Graveyard is littered with the remains of 'chosen peoples'
Of late, many have spoken of the beginning of the end of Zionism, but that is guessing what is almost certain. One may juxtapose such a remark with Mark Twain's quip that news of his death was greatly exaggerated; however, there is more to the story than vacuous hyperbole. With a planet already dogged down with excess pollution, socially-induced premature death, and about to be heated beyond repair, the creeping death of all communities is no longer an exaggeration.
Global uprisings for Gaza: The moral triumph of student revolts
BREAKING Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip: Distress calls from the areas of Rafah, Al-Zaytoun, Al-Sabra, and Jabalia, and our crews have no immunity to provide assistance. Islamic Resistance in #Lebanon said it attacked an Iron Dome position with attack drones confirming some of the components were hit and disabled. Al Mayadeen correspondent to southern Lebanon: An attack drone from Lebanon hit a military target in the vicinity of the Beit Hilel base in the al-Jalil Panhandle.
CNN exposes horrible Israeli torture methods on Palestinian detainees
Three Israeli whistleblowers working at the Sde Teiman torture camp, a "holding" site for Palestinians abducted during "Israel's" invasion of Gaza, have come forward with testimonies of systemic abuses by the military, including prisoners being restrained, blindfolded, and forced to wear diapers, CNN reports. The whistleblowers described the grim conditions that Palestinian detainees face in Sde Teiman, stating that they were not allowed to move, talk, or even peek under their blindfolds.
Putin: A Champion of the Global South?
On March 18, Vladimir Putin emerged as the winner of Russia's presidential elections, marking his fifth term as President of Russia. This occurred despite complications. While it is common for Russia to be the target of cyber-attacks, this year has witnessed record levels of such breaches on the country's electronic voting platform, with most attacks stemming from the US. Putin's landslide victory solicited positive reactions from many across the Global South.
Why is Saudi Arabia open to normalize relations with 'Israel'?
The world is presently bearing witness to the harrowing events of a genocide. Across television and mobile screens, individuals are observing the tragic spectacle of men, women, and children perishing in some of the most appalling circumstances conceivable. While the genocide may indeed have inflicted significant harm upon "Israel's" global reputation, it is imperative to acknowledge that Saudi Arabia remains committed to pursuing normalization of diplomatic relations with the regime.
Communists in Red Square honor centenary of Lenin's passing
Scores of Russian communists assembled in Red Square to observe the centenary of Vladimir Lenin's passing, partaking in one of the very few occasions dedicated to honoring the Soviet visionary. The 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik revolutionary's death has mostly gone unnoticed by the general population in Russia. However, Lenin remains a revered figure among those who harbor nostalgia for the Soviet Union.
The Looming Threat of Nuclear War
Nuclear war is possible but highly improbable. It is possible because the very existence of such weapons and advances in first-strike capability are sufficient reasons to anticipate such a war. It is highly improbable for the obvious reason that much of the planet ceases to support much of life. Although humanity has navigated upheavals of immense destruction throughout history, it has also engaged in colossal acts of self-destruction, and there are precedents to wars of massive auto-destruction.
Israelis present post-war strategies for Gaza ethnic cleansing
A disturbing report published by the Times of Israel earlier in the day reported that Israeli officials have held talks with several countries regarding the potential absorption of displaced Palestinians. This suggests that residents of the embattled Strip may not be granted the right of return once the Israeli aggression comes to an end.
Report details Israeli economic 'losses' due to war on Gaza, West Bank
The Wall Street Journal published a very provoking article earlier in the day, starting with the premise that Israeli businesses are suffering heavy losses as a result of the regime's decision to suspend Palestinian work permits since the start of the war on Gaza. "You wake up one morning and one-third of your workers are gone," Nir Yanushevsky, the owner of a real estate company, told WSJ writer Omar Abdul Baqui.
Foreign Affairs op-ed says US should withdraw forces from Middle East
An op-ed published for Foreign Affairs on Friday details some of the challenges the US administration is facing as a result of its unwavering support for "Israel" in its genocidal campaign in Gaza. Having caused immense civilian and infrastructural losses so far, the genocide has triggered region-wide anti-US sentiment of disproportional scale among the Arab masses.
USA: The Most Hated Country In The World
A day that will eternally etch as the most somber chapter in human history. The aggression at al-Ahli Hospital has exposed a never-seen-before degree of malevolence on the part of the Israeli regime. On October 17, a medical establishment meant to be a sanctuary for the ill, the wounded, and the displaced was blown off with the utmost brutality, extinguishing the lives of almost 500 beating hearts with just one single rocket.
USA: The most hated country in the world
October 17, 2023. A day that will eternally etch as the most somber chapter in human history. The aggression on al-Ahli Hospital has exposed a never-seen-before degree of malevolence on the part of the Israeli regime. On October 17, a medical establishment meant to be a sanctuary for the ill, the wounded, and the displaced was blown off with the utmost brutality, extinguishing the lives of almost 500 beating hearts with just one single rocket.
Hamas gains expose US as a 'paper tiger'
The situation in Gaza is deplorable. When examined objectively, it bears the hallmarks of genocide in every sense of the word. Hamas has initiated a surprise attack, which the mainstream has labeled a "terrorist" move. However, when we delve into the historical factors that have contributed to this escalation, it becomes apparent that it is a form of justified retaliation.
A wasted planet gone on sale
Amid the global trends of de-dollarization and de-neo-liberalization, the climate crisis has been relegated to a secondary concern. Not that it ever was a primary concern, since capital must destroy more than create to produce commodities, but there is less media hype on the issue. To waste people and nature (together social nature) is necessary for higher profit rates, and the hype is no more than an advertisement to market the wasted social nature.
Fearful of being kicked out of Africa, French senators write to Macron
On Tuesday, Senators LR Roger Karoutchi, Bruno Retailleau, and Christian Cambon wrote an open letter to French President Emmanuel Macron that was signed by 94 parliamentarians from various political backgrounds, calling for a review of France's policy in Africa. In the letter published by Le Figaro, the senators state that the idea of being described as nostalgics for Françafrique is an aberration that merely served to conceal France's failures and setbacks in its diplomatic policy in Africa.
Making sense of a self-induced recession in Europe
The Eurozone entering recession was no surprise to anyone. The slowdown was anticipated as soon as the first Russia sanctions came into effect with Russia gaining back control over Crimea. Back then, the EU had enforced several sanctions targeting specific entities and individuals linked to the Russian State. Although limited in scope, these sanctions showed clear signs that relations between the EU and Russia were treading on a fine line.
China's Peace in West Asia
Under the auspices of China, Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed to restore diplomatic relations on March 10. At the time of the deal’s announcement, US President Joe Biden said better relations between "Israel" and their Arab neighbors are better for everybody rather than relations with Iran. Better for "everybody" depends on what is meant for everybody. If it means the US financial classes and their Arab and Zionist comprador in the region, then Biden is spot on.
Saudi security versus petrodollar
On March 10, 2023, China brokered a peace agreement between rivals Iran and Saudi Arabia, a move that left the West baffled. Some suggested that the world had witnessed the slow and gradual collapse of the old world order. Although the deal may not necessarily achieve full normalization, still points of contact were restored. Such an event vexed policymakers while at the same ushered in an era of Chinese diplomatic victory in the area most crucial to US global dominance.
The Ukraine war: A spark for de-globalization?
By Source: Al Mayadeen English Today 15:25 The important aspect of this conflict is that Russian endurance would ease the transition towards a multipolar world, in which the right for one to develop at its own pace will be granted against the diktat of western values. It has been a year since the conflict in Ukraine broke out. By now, it is clear that western sanctions on Russia failed to reach their desired outcome.
De-dollarization: Slowly but surely
It has been almost a year since the war in Ukraine began. Since then, talk of de-dollarization has picked up speed. Even prominent mainstream economists Galbraith (2022) and Eichengreen (2022) have joined the bandwagon, but they do not see an avalanche that could unseat the dollar yet, and rightly so, but as argued here, they do so for the wrong reasons.
The Iranian Hijab: a working-class symbol in an anti-imperialist class
For the West, the sad death of Mahsa Amini came as an opportunity to fuel Iran-phobia and Islamophobia. A load of fabricated news and cyber propaganda accompanied Western-affiliated media coverage. Fake Twitter accounts were being created at high frequency in what amounted to a concerted ideological war against Iran. Such is not surprising given the long-standing US threat and actual assaults against Iran. Indeed, every national war against colonialism or neocolonialism overlaps with a class war.
NGOs in Lebanon: The new drones of US imperialism
It appears that Lebanon is always crying for help; so why so? It is natural for a country that imports most of what it consumes, produces little, and lives off the avails of self-prostituting to solicit geopolitical rents to demand more and more to redress its deficits. As of late, beseeching ‘donors’, the pseudonym of those US/European powers and their Gulf lackeys that invest in Lebanon with the blatant purpose of debilitating, have intensified as the country neared a condition of stasis.
