Are shootouts still exciting after 20 years? Goalies, skaters weigh in
By Jared Clinton, Features Writer Usually, anniversaries are met with a little flourish. Maybe a card. Maybe some cake. Flowers, at the very least. If nothing else, though, you expect a modicum of acknowledgment that you've reached a milestone, especially when it's one of those big, round numbers. But when it comes to the 20th anniversary of the shootout in the NHL, the whole thing came and went without much fuss.
A Big (Apple) Opportunity
By Jared Clinton, Features Writer When the New York Rangers hired Mike Sullivan early this off-season, doing so mere days after he had departed the division-rival Pittsburgh Penguins, some viewed it as a chance to change the culture in The Big Apple. Some saw it as a statement. The Blueshirts have Stanley Cup aspirations, and so they brought aboard a serial winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion. Others, however, saw it as a necessity.
Veggies Roots; Mammoth's Karel Vejmelka's Unlikely Rise To The NHL
By Jared Clinton, Features Writer Had he the inclination, there are any number of ways Corey Schwab could dress up the story of Karel Vejmelka. A former NHL netminder-turned- Utah Mammoth goalie coach, Schwab could spin a yarn about the process that led to the discovery of a hidden gem. If he so desired, Schwab could say he and the then-Arizona Coyotes staff saw what no other scouts did.
Nothing Ventured; JJ Peterka Is Ready Help The Mammoth Earn A Spot In The Playoffs
By Jared Clinton, Features writer There aren't many who will extol the virtues of the National Enquirer. That is, of course, because one would be hard pressed to associate the tabloid with virtuousness in the first place. But there is something to be said for the Enquirer's cockroach-esque ability to maintain its place as a fixture of grocery-store checkouts. Trust, too, that its longevity has little to do with any reputation as a great bastion of journalistic integrity.

How Lightning Star Brandon Hagel Broke Through Closed Doors To Become Great
By Jared Clinton, Features writer The puck had only just dropped in the round-robin meeting between Canada and the U.S. at the 4 Nations Face-Off, and there was Brandon Hagel, mitts off, fists cocked, standing toe-to-toe with Matthew Tkachuk. And in that moment, any thoughts about Tampa Bay drifted free from Jon Cooper's mind. As Cooper watched on, the Lightning bench boss could have been concerned about Tampa's second-highest scorer.
THN's Picks For Top Players And Staff In Multiple Metrics
By Jared Clinton, Features writer (Best player) Nathan MacKinnon COL Mikko Rantanen's shocking January departure left MacKinnon to shoulder the attack solo. And 'Nate Dogg' didn't miss a beat; his 1.37 points per game post-trade ranked him third among those with 30-plus games. What continues to elevate him beyond his peers is his uncanny and almost unparalleled ability to singlehandedly drive play. 2. Leon Draisaitl, Edm 3. Connor McDavid, Edm 4. Nikita Kucherov, TB 5.

Central Division
By Jared Clinton, features writer New seasons provide new opportunities, which create avenues for players to break out. The 2025-26 season will be no different, and in this article, The Hockey News take a look at the strongest candidates to make a name for themselves or ascend into stardom on the Central Division teams. The state of the Blackhawks roster is such that Spencer Knight is unlikely to find himself in Vezina Trophy talks. In fact, his stats might even appear subpar.
Atlantic Division
By Jared Clinton, features writer New seasons provide new opportunities, which create avenues for players to break out. The 2025-26 season will be no different, and in this article, The Hockey News take a look at the strongest candidates to make a name for themselves or ascend into stardom on the Atlantic Division teams. It was a surprise when Matthew Poitras made the 2023-24 Bruins out of camp, but a mid-season shoulder injury derailed his campaign.
Ranking All 32 NHL Teams' Active Goals Leader
Becoming an NHL franchise's active leader in goal-scoring often takes a ton of talent, consistency, loyalty and longevity. Of course, the bar isn't as high for rebuilding or recently rebuilt squads. We're seeing young talent forge a new path toward Stanley Cup contention. The same low bar goes for the newest NHL franchises, although enough time has passed for some of them that their all-time goals leader doesn't play for the team anymore - or hasn't been active for years.
Each NHL Franchise's Best Offensive Playoff Performances
By Jared Clinton, features writer Playing an eternal second fiddle in the franchise record books is a fate suffered by most players who suit up for the Edmonton Oilers. Such is life when skating in the seismic shadow of Wayne Gretzky. Take Connor McDavid's Conn Smythe-winning 42-point performance in the 2024 post-season, for instance. For this generation, it stands as the most remarkable feat of post-season output.
How Jaromir Jagr Could Have Been Drafted By The Flyers In 1990
By Jared Clinton, Features writer In 2011, when Jaromir Jagr sought to return to the NHL from his years in the wilderness - or the KHL, as it's more commonly known - a reunion with the Pittsburgh Penguins seemed not only on the table but a logical career capstone for the then-39-year-old hockey icon. Drafted fifth overall by the Penguins in 1990, Jagr had risen from precocious talent emerging from behind the recently fallen Iron Curtain to a big-league superstar and Hart Trophy winner.
Six Past NHL Trade Deadline Deals That Land On The Regret-O-Meter
Over the past 15 years, NHL teams that ponied up some high-priced packages to land sought-after players at the trade deadline were left with buyer's remorse. Here are six of those trades on the Regret-O-Meter. By Jared Clinton, Features Writer Blues Bother St. Louis Blues:RyanMiller, 2013-14 (withSteve Ott from Buffalo for 2015 first-round pick, 2016 third-round pick, Jaroslav Halak,Chris Stewart and William Carrier) Abig splash, Miller floundered in St. Louis.
Carolina Hurricanes' Seth Jarvis Has Made A Career Of Defying Expectations
By Jared Clinton, features writer Representing Canada internationally isn't foreign to Brad Marchand. Beyond a pair of WJC golds, which came before he went from relative unknown to possible (or even probable) Hall of Famer, Marchand has helped Canada to World Championship and World Cup titles. Despite his experience, though, Marchand had options when asked on an NHL on TNT broadcast to name a fresh face he was looking forward to playing alongside at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Highest NHL Scorers Since 2005 With No WJC Experience
As many future NHLers begin the 2025 world juniors in Ottawa, keep in mind that playing in the tourney doesn't make or break a career. From 2005 to the start of this season, here's a sneak peek from The Hockey News' World Junior Championship edition at the highest-scoring NHLers who never appeared in the annual men's U-20 tournament. Joe Pavelski, USA, 1,068 Points We'd shame the brain trust at USA Hockey who overlooked Pavelski, but few saw his potential.
Do You Know The Way To San Jose? Tyler Toffoli's Return To California Aims To Boost Rebuilding Sharks Original
What with Tyler Toffoli having been around the block a couple of times, and then once more for good measure, the simple pleasures of life in the NHL have mostly worn off. Don’t take that to mean he’s jaded by the experience. He still wakes up thrilled to go to the rink, some days feeling like a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed kid instead of a well-worn vet. But as with anything, experiences that were once novel over time become less so. Eventually, they even start to feel somewhat old hat.
Cable Cutters: Utah Hockey Club Steps Ahead In Game Streaming For Fans
Utah might be the new kid on the hockey block, but give the franchise and its ownership credit for already understanding one of the sport’s great axioms, often attributed to Walter Gretzky: skate to where the puck is going, not where it’s been. In September, the franchise became one of a growing number of pro sports organizations to join the burgeoning trend of bringing the game directly to their fans.
Sink Or Swim: Askarov Has True Chance To Prove His Immense Potential Between Pipes In San Jose Original
The off-season trade to the San Jose Sharks gives Yaroslav Askarov exactly what the promising young netminder has always wanted – the chance to show he has what it takes to be a starting goalie in the NHL. It's one thing to see the writing on the wall. It’s another to see your future spelled out in flashing neon lights.
Playoff Division: Is It Time to Change the NHL's Post-Season Format? Original
The NHL has more or less maintained its current Stanley Cup playoffs format – a divisional gauntlet with wild cards – for a decade. Changing it is possible, but it's easier said than done. For 10 years now, the NHL's Stanley Cup playoff format has emphasized divisional rivalries. In this excerpt from the special-edition 2024 Champions issue, The Hockey News' Jared Clinton looks back at the pros and cons of the league's post-season format.
