1 Introduction Selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) are synthetic compounds that share similar anabolic properties as androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS) but are proposed to bind androgen receptors (AR) selectively in certain tissues in the body. SARMs can be classified as steroidal or nonsteroidal. Nonsteroidal SARMs are not metabolized to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by 5α-reductase or oestrogen by aromatase and thus exhibit decreased androgenic activity.
