Scientists discover a trigger for cancer cells' self-destruction
Researchers have found that when cancer cells are compressed or tightly confined, they begin a process that results in their self destruction. Experts at Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai used three dimensional models to uncover how cancer cells responded when mechanically confined for prolonged periods of time.

Scientists put mice on a vegan diet. What they saw within days was striking
Vegan diets have been growing in popularity in recent years. However, experts investigated the impacts of an all-plant based diet in mice and found that it had a worrying effect on their liver. Researchers at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, saw that when mice were switched to an exclusively plant-based diet, within only a few days their liver function changed and they experienced a significant decrease in motivation to do physical activity.
Scientists find unusual pattern in children later diagnosed with cancer
Researchers may have found a previously unknown cause behind the development of pediatric cancer, which they say could enable earlier detection of the disease in young children. A team of scientists at the University of Bergen in Norway, found that children with pediatric cancer were more likely to produce autoantibodies that target several proteins needed for normal DNA repair. They also found that children with pediatric cancer had more of these antibodies even years before their diagnoses.
Tarcza na depresję? Naukowcy przebadali dzieci uprawiające sport
Naukowcy z Menzies Institute for Medical Research na University of Tasmania oraz z University of Adelaide odkryli, że wyższa wydolność krążeniowo-oddechowa zarówno w dzieciństwie, jak i w wieku nastoletnim, może zmniejszać ryzyko depresji w dorosłości. Szczególnie silny związek zaobserwowano między sprawnością fizyczną w dzieciństwie a ryzykiem depresji w dorosłym życiu. Wyniki badań zostaną opublikowane w czasopiśmie "Journal of Affective Disorders" 1 grudnia.
Researchers shed light on underestimated factor that could shape how we age
X and Y chromosomes could do a lot more than determine a person's biological sex—they may also influence aging and disease progression, research has found. Experts from the across the U.S. reviewed mouse models, human studies, and emerging technologies to uncover how sex chromosomes could impact the human body, and brought together existing evidence which suggests that chromosomes could play a role in aging, neurological disease, immunity, cancer, and cardiometabolic disease.
Scientists find potential weak spot in aggressive, drug-resistant cancer
Researchers may have uncovered a key driver of aggressive forms of prostate cancer, and found a way of potentially preventing a drug-resistant type of the cancer developing. Scientists at Fred Hutch Cancer Center, Seattle, found that the molecular regulator RNA—specifically tRNA, a type of RNA—may be able to influence the nature of prostate cancer cells and how they respond to treatment. The study was published in the journal Nature on October 7.

Scientists planted 40,000 Yosemite seedlings—years later, one issue remains
Yosemite National Park's famous meadows – which are crucial for the park's ecosystem and wildlife – are struggling, and researchers are attempting to restore the land before it's too late. Experts at Colorado State University planted 40,000 sedge seedlings in the Tuolumne Meadows in the hope that bringing native plants back to the area would improve soil health.
Scientists served ultra-processed and unprocessed meals—then compared the results
The way food is processed, not just its nutritional value, could affect how your body responds to it, researchers at Virginia Tech have found. The scientists gave participants either a minimally or significantly processed meal and made sure that both had the same nutritional value. They found those who ate the more processed meal experienced a different metabolic response and even had different activation of the brain region associated with motivation and reward. An MRI scan of the brain, left.
Scientists Develop Simple Test That Detects 95% of a Common Cancer in Study
A newly developed urine test could identify people with bladder cancer more accurately than current diagnostic methods, researchers have found. A team at Stanford University developed the uRARE-seq test, which they say will also allow physicians evaluate the impact of cancer treatment and could even help them understand which patients will respond best to different treatment options. The study was published in the journal Nature Medicine on October 2.

A vaccine to lower dementia risk may be coming. Would you take it?
The vast majority of older Americans say they would be interested in having a vaccine that significantly reduces the risk of dementia, new research has found. Experts at the University of Southern California Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics asked more than 1,500 Americans over the age of 50 if they would want to have a low-cost, multi-dose vaccine that could reduce the risk of developing dementia by half for those at high risk. The results were largely positive.
The diets that may help lower your Alzheimer's risk
Jasmine Laws Diet is considered by some experts to be one of the most clinically accessible, modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's, and, in conjunction with other lifestyle factors like exercise, sleep and stress, could potentially lower the risk of developing the disease. Whether there could be an “ideal” diet to reduce the risk of Alzheimer's is therefore something experts are keen to further investigate.

Measles cases hit 30-year high. How worried should Americans be?
America is currently experiencing its highest caseload of measles in over three decades, and the third person this year has died from complications associated with the virus. Measles is a highly contagious virus that was declared eradicated in the U.S. in 2000 following the development of the measles vaccine. Since then, there have been occasional annual spikes in case numbers. Over the last two years, though, cases have surged.
Smokers have lower Parkinson's risk. Scientists may know why
In recent years, research has indicated that rates of Parkinson's disease are lower among cigarette smokers and tobacco users than the general population. Now, a new study could have uncovered one reason why that might be the case. Several large studies have found a consistent inverse relationship between cigarette smoking and the risk of developing Parkinson's disease—meaning that the more a person smokes, the less likely they are to develop Parkinson's disease.
