Three Ways CIOs Can Help Their Organizations Play Both Offense and Defense
صورة جيسن كونيارد By Jason Conyard, Chief Information Officer, VMware In today’s uncertain economic environment, business leaders are looking to CIOs more than ever before, to accelerate key priorities while hitting aggressive financial targets. This often means charging ahead with digital initiatives that set us up for future success, while simultaneously lowering costs and optimizing for efficiency. If it sounds like these priorities are often in conflict, you’re not wrong.

Fast Forward: CIO Initiatives Driving Innovation for 2025
The need to support high velocity development, operations, and security processes across cloud native architectures to accelerate software iterations has contributed significantly to the evolution of CIO roles. No longer overseeing reactive, service-oriented IT organizations of the past, these IT executives are directly impacting revenue goals by enabling secure world-class user experiences built on multi-cloud configurations.
Reimagine Your Candidate and Employee Experience
During the past 12 months, I’ve studied how organizations, across various industries, have adapted to the ongoing challenges of a job market that requires meeting and engaging job candidates, new hires, and current employees within the digital (online and mobile) realm. That said, employee recruiting and retention is a hot topic for the C-suite.
How CIOs Are Leading a New Wave of Technology Driven Growth
In the past, strategic decisions and organizational change have been supported by technologies—rarely driven by them. CIOs were often left out of major decisions and tasked with executing the “how” regardless of the “why.” That’s no longer the case. They are seizing the opportunities presented by multi-cloud, modernizing their application pipeline, and meeting or exceeding expectations around hybrid workplaces.
Empowering the Future of Work for an 'Anywhere Workforce'
Share on: 0 Over the course of the global COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve witnessed the rapid transformation of work as many organizations pivoted to a distributed workforce model. Now that we’re two years into this significant transition, what are the implications that CIOs and the C-suite should consider next on their journey? How have employees weathered this shift?
The Virtual Floorplan: New Rules for a New Era of Work
Employees have come to expect the relative freedom and flexibility of a hybrid work environment to the point that it has become table stakes for employers looking to attract and retain talent. Embracing this “virtual floorplan” not only helps employers remain competitive in a cutthroat talent market, but also stands to significantly increase productivity, encourage collaboration, and improve cohesion. Yet, with these benefits come security challenges.
Inspire Organizational Change for Modern Agility
In March of 2020, organizations faced a massive shift. Almost overnight, entire operations were forced to go remote. Today, that trend continues. Ninety-two percent of respondents to the study “The Virtual Floorplan: New Rules for the New Era of Work” report at least some of their employees work remotely, which is only a 2% decrease from work-from-home poll results taken at the height of the pandemic.
Business Transformation a Catalyst for Innovation
VMware’s 2021 IT Performance Annual Report shows how we are driving positive change. While it’s true that transformation is a journey, I think it’s more useful to say that the business transformation of today is more of an attitude. By that I mean transformation is a choice we make every day. Business and IT leaders must model the transformation mindset so that it reaches their entire organization. Companies met the challenges of 2020 and 2021 with a raft of transformative technological solutions.
Measuring the Colleague Experience to Improve Productivity
As IT leaders, we focus on the uptime of the network and mission-critical applications as key measures of IT success. We often overlook the role of the colleague experience as a driver in supporting the business, as productivity can be hard to quantify. This view is rapidly changing as technology empowers organizations of any size to operate around the clock and around the world with unprecedented speed and scale.
What Does It Mean to Deliver a Delightful Colleague Experience?
When I use the word delightful to describe the experience that our technology team wants our colleagues to have, people often look at my quizzically. What does that mean, they ask? For me, it’s a deliberate word choice. In our professional lives, we do a lot of managing and measuring. We use thumbs up/thumbs down and scales of 1 to 5. Asking a colleague to rate their experience with technology using these methods, while valuable, is still subjective.
Why VMware IT Enables Colleagues, not Users
Technology is now woven into almost every aspect of our lives, no matter where you live. Mobile phones, tablets, wearable devices, and even voice-controlled personal assistants are pervasive. As consumers, we carry a rich technology experience in our pockets—our cell phones. It’s time that IT brings the same experience into our workplaces.
Virtualizing the Physical Workspace
I spend a fair amount of time thinking about how to improve our colleagues’ use of technology with the goal of making it easier to do our best work. We want to enable VMware employees to collaborate and communicate in ways that are intuitive and allow ideas and productivity to flow naturally. We don’t see this as a nice-to-have, but rather a business imperative. I think we can agree that in today’s workplace, technology isn’t frictionless and can still slow us down.
Why End User Computing is Undergoing Rapid Change - VMware on VMware
The VMware IT End User Services mission is straightforward: to enable our colleagues to do their best work by delivering a delightful technology experience. This translates to delivering a rich experience regardless of location or device. The challenge to accomplishing this is orchestrating adoption of the technologies that improve individual productivity, collaboration, and efficiency but have the flexibility to keep up with a rapidly changing business environment.
