Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

The New York Times owned a regional newspaper group. I worked for one of their weekly community newspapers while in high school.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

For sure!

How is social media changing news?

It amplifies the need to get it early and get it right. It allows journalist to have instant access to their audience and vice verse.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Clark Kent, of course!

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Journalism is a public trust. Acceptance of a lesser service than the public service is a betrayal of this trust.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email me a brief summary (up to nine smart and brief sentences) emphasizing why this matters and helps our audience, not why it helps you

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I'm not comfortable sharing this publicly.

What's your favorite social network?

IRL

Who do you wish followed you?

Elon Musk because I have several recommendations to share

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I enjoyed writing, sharing news, informing, and educating others. Then, I started helping companies tell their story.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I was the editor.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Through investigative efforts, a few years ago, I was able to avail an organization of unfounded claims of wrong doing.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Shed your preferences and bias. A journalist should be independent, objective, and neutral, not an opinionist.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Only pitch me if your brand has a public relations success story that others can learn from. Don't pitch a PR agency (employee) to me.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

One that was custom and specific to me, targeting the topics and audience that I serve.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Something about a local organization or event that's 100% unrelated to public relations topics, tips, and trends

What's your favorite drink?

Bitters and soda

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Walking on the beach or a trail

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

News briefs and alerts

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I would cover a competitor, or a local company's local news or event, or any topics that are not related to public relations.
