Ahmad Jawad Moradi’s Biography

Ahmad Jawad Moradi is a freelance journalist in Afghanistan.

How is social media changing news?

Today, journalists face challenges caused by new media technologies. Journalism is experiencing considerable changes linked to social, cultural, economical, and technological transformations. Social media brings new characteristics like interactive dialogue and social interactions. Journalists can now have real conversations with their audience. Online debates have also been put into place so that everyone can express themselves (when comments are enabled of course). Traditional one-way communication is turning into two-way conversations. Social media has given a real meaning to what freedom of speech is. In history, expressing yourself has never been so easy.

Who do you wish followed you?

Those who are looking for accurate news and reports and want to know the truth.

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a journalist because I loved to write, and getting a journalism degree and working at a newspaper and then magazines seemed the best way to become a writer. I love elements of journalism such as gathering information and interviewing people, which I’m very good at. But while I have won many journalism awards and written hundreds of journalism articles, I consider myself a writer rather than a journalist. By that I mean I write and have written many different types of things — humor columns, essays, material for companies, scripts, and novels. When I am writing those things, I am not a journalist. I still do many journalistic pieces, but primarily I think of myself as a storyteller. Sometimes journalism is the best way to tell a story, and somethings other types of writing can communicate a story better. Since I have been a freelance writer for many years, I can be many different types of writers during the same day — a journalist, a copywriter, a novelist, an essayist. They are all worthwhile and they are all different. The only thing, as a writer who wears many hats, is to understand the objective of any type of writing, and always act with honesty and integrity.

Society of Professional Journalists Award

2019 - Online Reporting

The Society of Professional Journalists works to improve and protect journalism. The organization is the nation’s most broad-based journalism organization, dedicated to encouraging the free practice of journalism and stimulating high standards of ethical behavior. Founded in 1909 as Sigma Delta Chi, SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to a well-informed citizenry; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and protects First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. The Society of Professional Journalists is dedicated to the perpetuation of a free press as the cornerstone of our nation and our liberty. To ensure that the concept of self-government outlined by the United States Constitution remains a reality into future centuries, the American people must be well-informed in order to make decisions regarding their lives and their local and national communities. It is the role of journalists to provide this information in an accurate, comprehensive, timely, and understandable manner. It is the mission of the Society of Professional Journalists: — To encourage a climate in which journalism can be practiced freely and fully — To promote this flow of information — To stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism — To foster excellence and to encourage diversity among journalists — To inspire successive generations of talented individuals to become dedicated journalists — Finally, the Society must maintain constant vigilance in protection of First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and of the press
