[Folio] | Bartók's Monster, by Jay Kirk | Harper's Magazine
More than anything he looked like a man grimly in need of a transfusion. Béla Bartók had the pallor of a garlic clove. A wan, sometimes acrid personality to match. As obsessed as he was with tempo, you could have spent half an afternoon frisking his skinny little frame before you found a pulse. One of his closest friends would describe his voice as “gray and monotonous,” though he didn’t really have friends.
Tinder and Other Dating Apps Don't Screen for Known Sex Offenders
The website Match.com is nearly 25 years old, making it the granddaddy of dating websites and a veritable dinosaur among younger platforms like Tinder and Bumble. Despite its age, the website is still quite active, boasting an estimated 35 million unique monthly visitors and a much bigger share of older users than the newer apps do. The American City Where Sex Offenders Live
When you are a registered sex offender in America, you lose the right to choose where you want to live. By law. Your backstory doesn't matter. Nor does the nature of your crime or your excuse. You are exiled from society, and only a few places will welcome you. Like this place in South Florida. The City of Refuge. Jay Kirk reports on life in an American community—yes, that's definitely the right word—like no otherI suppose in this case I am the offender.
Burn Victim Sam Brown Treated With Virtual-Reality Video Game SnowWorld
At will and sometimes against his will, Sam Brown can return in his mind to that hour in the Kandahar desert when he knelt at the edge of a blast crater and raised his flaming arms to the Afghanistan sky. He’d already run through the macabre slapstick routine of a man on fire, trying to put himself out by rolling on the ground. He’d resorted to pelting his face with fistfuls of sand. That failing, he’d run in helpless circles.
