'Self-Sufficient' vs. Supported: What They Don't Teach NPs in School
Health care is fragmented. Working in health care is no different. Too often any unity we experience is centered on things that are the most broken — the things that we aren't explicitly taught in school or in clinical rotations. There isn't much that is soft about these skills, and just because they aren't clinically focused doesn't mean they are any less essential to our learning, professional development, or role transition.
When it Comes to Patient Care, One Size Does Not Fit All
New York City is often hailed as one of the most diverse urban landscapes in the world. That diversity, while celebrated, comes with stark contrasts. As a medical student rotating through two major academic hospitals — one in Brooklyn and the other in Manhattan — I encountered firsthand the profound disparities between two patient populations that were geographically close but, in terms of their care experiences, worlds apart.
Crisis-Driven Care is Failing Elderly Patients and Their Families
It was a lazy Sunday afternoon when I heard a knock at the door. My neighbor stood there, asking us for help after finding an elderly woman had fallen in her driveway across the street. My husband and I ran over to find her lying on the ground next to her rollator. She cried out in pain as we tried to move her and said she had hit her head on the concrete. She did not want us to call 911 since her husband would return shortly, but she could not get up.
The Pros and Cons of 'Easy' and 'Hard' Patients
I recently bumped into my cardiologist a week before my yearly follow up. Fortunately, I continue to do well after my quintuple bypass six years ago. "I'll be seeing you Thursday," I told him. "Last patient of the day … an easy one," I added for emphasis. As a fellow physician, I recognize that beyond new patients, return visits, and post-operative classifications, some encounters will be easy, and some will be hard. The right ratio will determine how manageable the day is.

How Embracing the Unknown Has Helped Me Move Forward in Medicine
Op-Med is a collection of original articles contributed by Doximity members. I always feared the question mark. Question marks need answers, and I long feared giving an incorrect one. In the classroom, an incorrect answer could mean a failing grade. In the clinic, an incorrect diagnosis could lead to a failed treatment. Outcomes could be even worse in surgery. Failure was a frightening endpoint. Question marks also represent an unknown, and I was never comfortable with the unknown.
Surveying Work-Life Balance
Op-Med is a collection of original articles contributed by Doximity members. Most clinicians would scoff at an interpretation of work-life balance to mean equal time spent at work and outside work. An equal percentage is mythical, impractical, and impossible. In a state of ideal balance, we would all be the best clinician, spouse, and parent we could be regardless of time spent. While we track patient complications and satisfaction, how do we measure our outcomes outside of work?
