Java - When is an unassigned expression a valid statement?
I've read Oracle's expressions tutorial and couldn't understand this. It is well known that the following line of code is valid Java syntax: new Object(); However, when I try this with a primitive expression: (3 + 2); Eclipse is showing a compile error of "The left-hand side of an assignment must be a variable". This is true not only for primitives, but also for String literals: "arbitraryString"; So what is the rule for an unassigned expression to be valid as a Java line of code?
Java8 method reference used as Function object to combine functions
You should be able to achieve what you want inline by using casts: Stream.of("ciao", "hola", "hello") .map(((Function<String, Integer>) String::length).andThen(n -> n * 2)) There are only 'type hints' for the compiler, so they don't actually 'cast' the object and don't have the overhead of an actual cast.
How does java.util.EnumSet<E> work?
import java.util.*; enum Foo { A, B } class a { public static void main(String[] args) { System.out.println(EnumSet.noneOf(Foo.class)); System.out.println(EnumSet.of(Foo.A)); System.out.println(EnumSet.of(Foo.A).getClass()); } } This prints: [] [A] class java.util.RegularEnumSet As regards implementation, this link provides a description: EnumSet is an abstract class and it provides two concrete implementations, java.util.RegularEnumSet and java.util.JumboEnumSet.
When does the binary operators execution happen in Java?
I'm trying to understand java byte code. I started with simple example: And then I tried to a on the .class like this: which gave me this: I could able to make sense out of it, apart from this line: looking at my source and this byte code, looks like javac already done the operation of addition for this statement: and asking jvm to return that constant. Can some one correct me if my understanding is wrong?
Why is Thread not an abstract class and Thread.start() not final method
Why was the class implemented as a regular class and not an abstract class with method being abstract. Will it possibly introduce any problems??? Or does it have any use in being this way??? Also, the method is supposed to be a very specific method whose functionality cannot be implemented by any other class (If I am not wrong). And hence I guess the keyword would be apt for this more than any other method.

java:Split String into smaller String and again into key:Value pairs
Your program is absolutely fine. Just because you asked for a more optimal code. I reduced your memory by taking few variables instead of taking arrays and storing in them. Look at your string it follows a patter. key : value :: key : value ::.... What can we do from this? get the key till it is : , once it reaches : get value until it reaches '::'.
Java inheritance vs initialization
The problem is not that inheritance could not work. The problem is that with inheritance the developer can not enforce some behaviour (like the example of the collection that satisfy some predicate) . When we create a new class rarely it really is a specialized type of another. More often it is something new that use other classes. So rarely we need inheritance and more often we need to create a class that use other classes to so something.
How to handle the default value of an ArrayList
I'm creating an application containing a class I'm writing called Person. One of the fields of Person is 'aliases' which is an . Ultimately the aliases will be displayed to the user according to the following logic: If Person has aliases then they should be displayed as , otherwise should be displayed. So far I've tried implementing this in one of three ways: Person contains the method which simply returns a copy of the ArrayList as is.
How is concatenation of final strings done in Java?
Which produces the following byte code so string literal "string" is already there in the constant pool which gets pushed on stack at this line. A variable of primitive type or type String, that is final and initialized with a compile-time constant expression (§15.28), is called a constant variable. Compile-time constant expressions of type String are always "interned" so as to share unique instances, using the method String#intern().
