What was your first job as a journalist?

Co-edited a natural resources magazine.

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

It's opened up the conversation.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lou Grant.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To inform. To entertain. To shine a light in dark corners. To get as close to the truth as possible. To give a voice to those without one.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I have no idea.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Microsoft Office, Newsgate, iPhone video apps.

What's your favorite social network?

Don't have one. But I use Facebook and Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

Never thought of that before.

Why did you become a journalist?

To make a difference.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes. Sports editor.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Revealing how hundreds of railroad workers had been diagnosed with brain damage from work exposure to solvents.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Follow your bliss.
