A Child of the East End
'One of my first East London memories is lying in bed, listening to the low boom of the barges as they nudged each other on the Thames, just half a mile away from our estate...' Life in Cockney London was tough in the post-war years. The government's broken promises had led to a chronic housing shortage, rampant crime and families living in squalor. But one thing prevailed: the unbeatable spirit of the East End, a tight-knit community who pulled through the dark times with humour and heart.

Eve's Pudding - A British World War One Recipe
Written by Jan Rosser in Food and Drink on 27 Nov 2020 | Views: 17 Here is another recipe from good friend Juliet Greenwood. This is a recipe from the era of the First World War, which I discovered when researching the recipes for 'We That are Left'. I loved making this! It's a light and tasty way of using cooking apples, or eaters that are starting to go. It's bit like an apple soufflé. I added a little grated lemon rind to the apples for an extra zing.
Susanna Bavin's blog
In April, I posted a couple of blogs of recommended reading for lockdown and I thought it was time for another. This time, following on from the VE Day commemorations held last week, I am concentrating on sagas set in wartime - not just the Second World War, but also the First. Let's start with the Second World War stories. * * * * East End Angel by Carol Rivers The story opens with Pearl at her wedding reception. Sounds like a happy occasion? It is...

Widow Ellen O'Casey struggles to support her family, taking in laundry by day, singing at a seedy pub at night, and saving every possible penny for passage to New York. Winwood captures both Ellen's exhaustion and her personal dignity.

Readers Reviews Of Latest Legend Press Books
I am delighted to be sharing readers reviews of the latest great Legend Press novels. My thanks to Lucy. The year is 1926, and in London 2 baby girls are born on the same day, hours apart-but also world's apart.....one is born into a family of undertakers and the other into royalty. This story alternates between 2016 and the past.....I'm not a big fan of stories that flit back and forth as it can get confusing, but this story is written so well it isn't confusing at all.
My Review Of Betsy And Lilibet By Sophie Duffy
Elizabeth (Betsy) Sunshine is born on the very same day as another, much more famous Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth II. They'll both live through some of the most turbulent times of the 20th century, and their paths will cross just occasionally - once on V E Day in Trafalgar Square, no less - but they'll lead very different lives. What they have in common is a strong sense of duty.
