Snapshot of an immigrant justice vigil from the LA Catholic Worker
The Metropolitan Detention Center is shown Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2025, in Los Angeles. (AP/Damian Dovarganes) He sobbed copiously as he told his story. Manuel was looking for his wife, who had been taken while performing her legal obligations at the San Bernardino federal building and transported to the federal building in Los Angeles. We had just begun our weekly Friday vigil against ICE in front of the L.A. federal building when Manuel approached us, clutching a sheaf of legal documents.
Día de los Muertos at the Catholic Worker
When my brother Joe died by suicide years ago, our family was devastated. Loved ones gathered around us, and in their presence our somber thoughts of Joe and his death were interspersed with wine, whiskey, camaraderie and community. It occurred to me that Joe's body should be there, right in the midst of us. My brother was a surfer, swimmer and lifeguard; as such, I thought, Joe's ashes should be cast into the sea. But no, you could not have a party with a dead body, or a burial at sea.
A life of Catholic activism: Resurrection, resistance and answered prayers
On Aug. 10, my 90-year-old wife and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary by risking arrest and jail time at Vandenberg Space Force Base. In memory of Hiroshima and the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine, we will once again commit civil disobedience. My life — my real life — began with resistance. The day in 1970 that I refused induction into the U.S. military, refused to murder, bayonet, maim or kill the enemies of my country, was the day that I was reborn into the fullness of life.

LA Skid Row anchors Catholic Worker 'to the suffering world'
Editor's note: This piece is an excerpt from Jeff Dietrich's forthcoming book on his experience with the Los Angeles Catholic Worker. He rose abruptly, cracking the empty bottle of Thunderbird on the side of the curb. Waving his jagged-edged weapon, he crossed the street toward our soup line. Aubury Robinson, a former lightweight contender, was ready for action. I knew from past experience that I would have to intervene. He took a drunken swipe at me with his broken bottle and I subdued him by force.
Commentary: To work on skid row, I’ve had to become inured to suffering
She wears silver hot pants when she comes to eat at our soup kitchen on skid row and she affects a regal air like the queen that she is. She dominates the garden with a flip of a wrist or the swish of a feathered boa. At well over 6 feet, Jerri looks stunning in her hot pants and her black seamed stockings held up by garters stretched tautly down her thighs. With a silver crop top and towering stilettos she is every inch a royal.
