Rebecca Mardal is quietly making a whole lot of noise with her minimalist guitar improvisations
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. In the sea of shred that occupies much of the online guitar sphere, the waves currently being made by Swedish guitarist and producer Rebecca Mardal have rippled far and wide. Mardal paradoxically stands out with her quiet brand of beautifully delicate lo-fi soundscapes — instrumentals interwoven with her deep and lyrical guitar solos, highlighted by her remarkably light touch.

To take a flyover of Steve Lukather’s long and storied career is to essentially reminisce about the heights of the past 40 years of pop and rock music. He is both an original member of Toto — who have sold more than 40 million records worldwide, including timeless hits like “Africa” and “Rosanna” — and a prolific solo artist, with an impressive nine albums to his credit, including 2023’s Bridges. These accomplishments alone would have most of us gratefully calling it a day.

Prince told her she was “too funky” and Bruno Mars sent her one of his signature Strats: Ella Feingold weaves magic with her funky playing, and this lesson in her style will sharpen up your rhythm work in no time
Prince slyly told her she was “too funky.” Bruno Mars sent her one of his signature Fender Strats, and Bootsy Collins and Ray Parker Jr. left glowing comments on her Instagram posts. Guitarists are usually lauded for their soloing prowess, but Ella Feingold doesn’t solo – she doesn’t feel the need. Instead, she weaves magic with her rhythm playing, creating a unique and soulful blend of classic and forward-looking funk guitar that’s fueled by her uncanny sense of time.

Generally, when we rock guitarists ponder adding a new technique to our arsenal, we find ourselves gravitating toward tackling a new and challenging way to negotiate the fretboard, or woodshedding a new picking technique. By the same token, when we have a hankering for new textures, we’ll often head over to YouTube to enter a rabbit hole of pedal demos.

The Randy Rhoads Years
In the fall of 1980, rock guitarists were still trying to wrap their heads—and fingers—around the wizardry of the still-ascendent Eddie Van Halen. By late 1983, many would begin to be mesmerized by the hellacious shredding of Yngwie Malmsteen. Both of these guitar greats were heavily influenced by classical music; EVH, who grew up playing classical piano, would only occasionally showcase what he’d learned in his playing (the classically tinged iconic tapping section of “Eruption” comes to mind).

The Ultimate Greta Van Fleet Guitar Lesson
Back in the early ’90s, when the Black Crowes appeared on the music scene, my friends and I (and many critics of the day) promptly wrote them off as sounding just a bit too much like the Rolling Stones. But we soon discovered we were each listening to them on the down-low, won over by their hooky songs and solid guitar playing. They ultimately transcended that initial hasty comparison, and some of those same songs are now considered classics.

Lynyrd Skynyrd’s road to superstardom began in 1964, inside a small cabin at the end of a field in Jacksonville, Florida. They called it Hell House, which gives you a general idea of the accommodations – or lack thereof – afforded by the intense Florida heat. Nevertheless, in its confines, they spent years writing and rehearsing the songs that would be featured on their classic 1973 debut album, (Pronounced ’Lĕh-’nérd ’Skin-’nérd), and establish them as an iconic southern rock band.

Mick Ronson: Glam Rock Chameleon
Glam rock roared into existence in the 1970s along with its flamboyant and theatrical style, both in terms of music and fashion. Artists like David Bowie and T. Rex brought a brash sense of camp as well as a newfound freedom to explore androgyny—along with lots of make-up, glitter, and costumes. In the midst of all of this, Mick Ronson emerged as a guitarist seemingly made for the time, eager to push the boundaries of rock guitar with his brimming creativity.
Is 'Fair Warning' Eddie’s Best Work?
“So, Jeff, what do you think of Van Halen?” a friend whispered to me during eighth-grade English class. “Who?” I replied. “You play guitar, and you don’t know who Eddie Van Halen is?!?” The very next day he handed me a cassette of Van Halen, the band’s earth-shattering debut, and, like so many others, the trajectory of my musical life would be forever changed. It stands to reason that this über-classic album would be many a fan’s favorite.
Discover the Inspiring Musical Magic and Distinctive Touch of Guitar Legend Joe Walsh
I have worked as a professional music transcriber for most of my life, transferring music (especially guitar music) from the air to the page. Even before that, as a kid, I would always be doing what I then called “figuring stuff out,” trying to decipher the magic I heard in my favorite musicians’ playing. One day, I was struck by Louis Armstrong’s trumpet solo on one of my dad’s old recordings, and I knew right away I had to play it, in particular, one especially cool-sounding phrase.

Barney Kessel: Badass Jazz Guitar
Admittedly, I was late in discovering one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time. It wasn’t until 2018 through a deep dive that I truly understood how incredible Barney Kessel was. I found him to be a bit different. There was a certain edge to his playing, some badass attitude in the mix.
